Site Preferences Research your options @ www.doe.in.gov Do not limit yourself: – You must represent at least two counties – The more counties you represent, the better your chance of placement – Be SURE of your choices (must appeal to change) Things to Consider Some corporations have a GPA requirement, for example: – Noblesville 2.8 – Hamilton Southeastern 2.8 – Carmel Clay 3.0 – Valparaiso 3.0 – MSD Southwest Allen 3.0 – Greenfield Central 3.0 Preference Rules of Thumb You cannot student teach in a school in which you have a relative working. A local placement is considered to be within a 60 mile radius of Bloomington. It is the decision of the school which student teachers they accept, not Indiana University. Out of State Student Teaching Opportunity Spring Branch Independent School District, Houston, TX - opportunity to student teach there Estimated that Texas will need 26,730 teachers to fill vacancies – a 16,000+ deficit If interested, please select [Unknown] – Spring Branch Independent School District TEIS URL education.indiana.edu/TEIS/ TEIS Screen Shots ACCESS CODE FOR BOX Special Programs/License Additions Application Summary Corporation Preferences Print Preview Paper Application Sign/Date All Printed Copies PLEASE REMEMBER Finding over 400 student teaching placements takes time. If you will be student teaching in the Fall 2016, your placement information may not be confirmed any sooner than May or June. If you will be student teaching in the Spring 2017, your placement information may not be confirmed until November or December 2016. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you as soon as we know your placement. E-mails sent to us daily can only take up time I would be spending calling the schools on your behalf. Application Things to consider: Your application is the school’s introduction to you. – Proofread carefully Grammar Punctuation Sentence structure Spelling Make it well organized and thoughtful The Paper Application – Due in one weeks – by November 6th – Includes: In file folder provided Online application completed Printed - two (2) single sided copies of the paper application Signature Form for transcript release Copy of Criminal Background Check More Things to Consider: Nothing is guaranteed—even after you receive information that your placement is confirmed, things may change. – Eligibility – Teacher – Principal – Corporation INTERVIEW A school administrator, principal, or teacher may call you for an interview before placement. Treat it like you would a job interview. How should you dress? What should you bring with you to make yourself look organized and well prepared? SPRING BREAK/CALENDAR You will follow the calendar of the school corporation in which you are student teaching. If they start before IU classes start, you will start with that school. If their spring break is different than IU’s spring break, you will follow their spring break schedule. DO NOT make spring break plans until you know where you are placed. Background Check If you already have completed one that has not yet expired, a copy of that will work. If you have not completed a background check within the past year, follow the directions and include a copy in your file. If there is anything on your background check, write a well thought out appeal. Current School Issues Because of the climate in schools today, many things must be consider by you. 1. You are a guest in the school. a. Show respect to all school community members. b. Appropriate dress 2. Teaching methods have changed a. Co-Teaching teaching approach is more common. b. Be patient and understanding of their pressures Deadlines Applications are due to the Student Teaching office by November 6th Incorrect information can result in delays LATE applications will NOT be accepted!
