ENG 3U1 Exam Preparation MYTH #1: “I read the books, I don’t need to study for my English exam.” WRONG: It is imperative you study for your English exam or you will not succeed! Here are some helpful hints for preparing for your exam: STUDYING To effectively prepare for your final examination ensure you complete the following: Review daily homework activities and questions – this will review content Review test questions – these will help with specific examples to support your arguments Review literary terms – it is always good to integrate these into your analysis Review essay and paragraph format (*including all elements of introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion) – this is essential as you will have to write an essay! Complete in class activities for exam preparation (see below). Use these as study notes. ESSAY PREPARATION Based on the following themes, prepare a response in point form outline format. Be sure to incorporate Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Twelfth Night and Life of Pi. The overarching theme of this course is the power of literature. Analyze the power of storytelling for the central characters in Twelfth Night, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and Life of Pi. Yann Martel said at the beginning of Life of Pi “If we citizens do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams.” Analyze the validity of this statement as it applies to all three texts studied this semester. “What’s the use of stories that aren’t even true?” Analyze how each of the works studied outlines the value of stories that aren’t true.\ In Life of Pi, Pi Patel says to Mr. Okamoto and Mr. Chiba “If you stumble at mere believability, what are you living for? . . . Love is hard to believe . . . Life is hard to believe . . . God is hard to believe. What is your problem with hard to believe?” (Martel 297). Apply this quote to the three works studied this semester. Each of the central characters in Twelfth Night, Haroun and the Sea of Stories and Life of Pi undergo an emotional metamorphosis (change or transformation). Analyze how each character’s despair metamorphosis’s into hope. Rashid says “There’s more to you than meets the blinking eye”. Analyze how there is more to the protagonists than meets the eye.
