MapWindow GIS
MapWindow GIS
MapWindow GIS is an open source GIS (mapping) application and set of
programmable mapping components. Because it is distributed as an open source
application under the Mozilla Public License distribution license, MapWindow GIS can
be reprogrammed to perform different or more specialized tasks. There are also plugins available to expand compatibility and functionality. MapWindow GIS is built upon
Microsoft .NET technology but is not a multi-platform application and hence does not
run on non-Microsoft operating systems including Mac OS X, Linux, and UNIX.
MapWindow GIS is notable software because it has been adopted by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency as the primary GIS platform for its BASINS (Better
Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources) watershed analysis and
modeling software. BASINS is distributed from the EPA website world-wide and has
been used by thousands of watershed modeling professionals at the federal, state, and
local level as well as internationally.
MapWindow GIS is continually maintained by an active group of student and voluntary
developers who regularly release updates and bug fixes

Quantum GIS
Quantum GIS (cont)
Quantum GIS (Cont)
Quantum GIS (often abbreviated to QGIS) is an open source GIS (mapping) application
which is similar to commercial mapping packages. Because it is distributed as an
opensource application under the GNU distribution license, Quantum GIS can be
reprogrammed to perform different or more specialized tasks. There are also plug-ins
available to expand compatibility and functionality. Quantum GIS has a small file size
compared to commercial GIS's and requires less RAM and processing power; hence it
can be used on older hardware or running simultaneously with other applications where
CPU power may be limited.
It is a multi-platform application and runs on different operating systems including Mac
OS X, Linux, UNIX, and Windows XP. Performance appears to be better on nonWindows machines [citation needed]. For Mac users, the advantage of Quantum GIS
over GRASS GIS is that it does not require the X11 windowing system in order to run,
and all around the interface is much cleaner and faster. Quantum GIS can also be used
as graphical user interface to GRASS.

uDig GIS (cont)
uDig is an open source GIS software program produced by a community led by
Canadian-based company Refractions Research. It is based around the Eclipse
platform and features full layered Open Source GIS. It is written in Java and released
under GNU Lesser General Public License.
uDig has a walkthrough in Flash and also quick start directions for those who wish to
complete a full version build to write plug-ins or contribute to the main build.

gvSIG
gvSIG is a multilingual, open source geographic information system (GIS) that can handle
both vector and raster data. It features basic editing tools for the creation and maintenance
of vector or raster spatial data on a variety of file formats, including remote data sources.
gvSIG is being actively developed in Java by IVER Tecnologías under the GNU General
Public License (GPL) [1]. Its name is a Spanish abbreviation that stands for Generalitat
Valenciana. Sistema de Información Geogràfica.

Manifold (Cont)
Manifold System is a geographic information system (GIS) software package developed by
manifold.net that runs on Microsoft Windows. The GIS software competes with ESRI and
MapInfo GIS products. Manifold 7.00 handles both vector and raster data, includes spatial
SQL, a built-in Internet Map Server (IMS), and other general GIS features. Manifold System
has a vibrant user community with a mailing list and online forums.
Superb GIS and mapping using vector drawings and raster images and surfaces in perfect
integration. Includes full scripting and development facilities plus the best database
management and analysis capabilities of any GIS. Includes Internet Map Server for GIS enabled
web sites using HTML, OGC WMS, OGC WFS-T (transaction enabled) and Manifold Image

Academic Users: Manifold System is available under a very generous program of Academic
License grants which donates, free of charge, Manifold System licenses to qualified academic
institutions. The program is best suited for academic institutions that have acquired at least
one commercial license of Manifold System. Such institutions are encouraged to apply for an
Academic License that will enable use of an effectively unlimited number of Manifold
installations at no charge for non-commercial education and research purposes. Academic
licensees may even use Manifold to administer academic institutions facilities, fund-raising and
other institutional needs
