Taylor Made News May 2015 Principal’s Message May has been busy so far! Our 3rd and 4th grade students have completed all but one testing session of the PARCC assessment this year, our wonderful Art Show has concluded, and Spring Fling (although delayed) was a great time. Last week we had some great weather for Massachusetts Walk to School Day. Here are is a picture from the walk starting on Paula Lane: At Bridgewater State University on Thursday, April 30, 2015 five 4th grade students were recognized in a state wide contest for their Poetry and Posters by the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center. Congratulations to Ashley Shailor, Madelyn Maher, Paige Curran, Sarah Howard, and Samantha Conley. One thing my wife and I have been noticing at home is the difficulty in sticking to our routine. With additional activities and the sun being up after 8 PM it is easy to slide into the weekend routines. At this time of year it is important for our children to maintain our school schedule consistently. We have made a shift this week to get back on schedule. Our three children were not thrilled the first night of bed-time with the sun still up, but they are now feeling the benefits. …Pete Regan… Page 1 Upcoming Events 5/18 Chess Wizards 7:45-8:45 5/19 Cut- Ups 9-11:00 5/19 PACC Test Grade 4 ELA 5/19Talor Trotters 3-4:00 5/19 Summer Book Club Meeting Grades 2-4 @ Taylor 6:30 5/20 PARCC Test Grade 3 5/20 Room 19 Nutrition Detectives 5/21 Room 18 Nutrition Detectives 5/21 Taylor Trotters 3-4:00 5/21 Kindergarten Meet and Greet @ Taylor 6:30-7:30 5/22 Staff App. Luncheon 5/25 Memorial Day/ No School 5/26 Kindergarten Screening 5/26 Taylor Trotters 3-4:00 5/27 Bus Evac. During May Is Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), Taylor’s speechlanguage pathologist, Lori Capone encourages parents to set meaningful limits on technology use, especially for young children through the primary grades. While technology offers positive potential in many areas, it is important that young children are spending the majority of their time listening and conversing with others, as well as engaging in imaginative play and outdoor activities—all of which help them learn and develop. Parents can take steps to manage tech time by setting daily time limits, establishing tech-free settings such as the dinner table, and considering whether a young child really needs his or her own device, as many now have. The summer months, which may include events such as long vacation drives; provide ample opportunities for communication that parents should try to take advantage of. Many activities at home and in the car provide opportunities to interact with your child. Board games like “Apples to Apples,” “Blurt,” “Scategories,” “In a Pickle,” and “I Spy” are fun and engaging while learning language skills and spending time together. You may know word games you played as a child, such naming different categories (car names, street names, types of stores, types of buildings and so on), or verbal charades such as “I Spy” to guess what you are thinking of, describing movies, occupations, books or other topics. Even asking “Do you remember when?” and talking about the events of that time and how you felt. It is my hope that you will help you will enjoy the multitude of opportunities available to engage in child or children in conversations and rich language during Better Hearing & Speech Month, and beyond! On Friday, May 8, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) will released new figures that show, “A significant percentage of young children today are actively using personal technology. What is amazing is just how early it starts. For instance, 68 percent of 2-year-olds are using these devices at home, according to our survey respondents (parents of U.S. children ages 0-8). This survey includes whether parents feel technology impacts the quality and quantity of conversations with kids, as well as where and when kids most often use this technology.
