Best wishes to everyone from the South West Blues Club; we hope everyone has a wonderful festive season. Welcome to the December Newsletter. Firstly an apology, this was supposed to be sent out last week, however we are in the process of moving and we lost our internet service for a while! Wow, November was certainly a busy month for blues lovers and music lovers in general! We had the annual Bridgetown Blues Festival, and we hosted a couple of fabulous Artists at the Eliot Street Bar ourselves. Behind the scenes the Committee has been working away tirelessly. The focus for the Committee is still finalising the business plan and getting ready for what is going to be a very busy year in 2015. We are already in discussions with some sensational Artists trying to finalise dates bookings (more on this next month, we are not quite there yet). Starting off the New Year will be a great night of entertainment with a couple of very, good acts. Andrew Winton and The Flaming Crows SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 2014 has been a devastating year for the blues music community, this year has seen the passing of several noteworthy blues musicians. The list includes Performers such as, Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce, Jonny Winter; Pete Seeger, Ian McLagan, Jimmy Ruffin, Bobby Keys, Bobby Womack, Jesse Winchester, Franny Beecher and Phil Everly. We are going to feature some of these artists over the next couple of months as a tribute to their historic influence and also the pleasure they have given us all over the years. We are going to start with Joe Cocker, as he was one of my favourite performers. My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him live and it was a great experience. He would have been at least 60 and still put on a sensational show. Joe Cocker SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 Joe was one of the British music scene heroes of the Sixties. A deep working class upbringing kept him close to his roots, with his musical idols being Lonnie Donnegan and Ray Charles. Cocker attended Sheffield Central Technical School and worked as a gas fitter for the East Midlands Gas Board. In 1959 he joined his first group, the Cavaliers, playing drums and harmonica. He moved to lead vocals. In 1961, the band changed their name to Vance Arnold (Cocker) and the Avengers. They released regional singles and toured locally with the Hollies and the Rolling Stones. All the while building a strong local fan base where his beep gravelly voice and eccentric and unusual stage presence established a cult like following. Decca offered Cocker a contract in 1964, he turned this into a string of hits but by the 1970’s his battle with alcohol and drugs meant he had to take a six-month leave of SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 absence from the gas company. He emerged with an English tour opening for Manfred Mann which was all but ignored, and he went back to his day job. The following year Cocker and keyboardist Chris Stainton assembled the Grease Band with guitarists Henry McCullough and Alan Spencer and two other musicians. They played Motown covers in northern England pubs until 1967, when producer Denny Cordell became Cocker's manager and persuaded him and the band to move to London. A Cocker-Stainton song, "Marjorine," became a minor British hit, and after some exposure in London, Cocker and the Grease Band recorded With a Little Help from My Friends in 1968 with guests Jimmy Page, Steve Winwood. The title track, one of many cover versions Cocker would record over his career, went to Number One in England and Number 68 in the U.S. His explosive performance of the song at Woodstock was a festival highlight. When Cocker sang a version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright" on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, his wild on stage antics led the program's producer to hide him behind a group of dancers. With his fame and reputation growing, he shared stages with the likes of the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. He also became good friends with Paul McCartney and George Harrison of the Beatles that they would play him their new songs before they had even recorded them. By the Seventies Cocker was again battling with his demons. His career on a downward spiral, he descended into a haze of alcohol and drugs, and his concerts were often farcical with him unable remember the lyrics of his hits. There was no rehab in those days. Drugs were readily available, and he by his own admission, dived in head first. And once you get into that situation, it’s difficult to find a way out. It took him years to get straight. SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 It is with great sadness that we are faced with the passing of another great legend. Joe Cocker one of the world’s greatest performers. He became Famous for his wild stage antics, his renditions of rock and soul classics. When Cocker first became successful, he was a beer-drinker from working class Sheffield. As his career took off he was thrown into the wild world of American rock. Socializing and Partying with Stars such as Hendrix and Janis Joplin. For Cocker, those were the bad old days. He met his American wife, Pam, in 1978; she helped to pull him back from the abyss. In his own words, it was Pam, who helped me get myself back together, ‘She made me think positively. I was very down on myself. She made me realise people still wanted to hear me sing, and convinced me I could escape the cycle of abuse. I’d become a cartoon character, but my European fans were loyal. Even when I was at my most crazed, throwing my shoes into the crowd at gigs, they stuck with me. That helped me to rediscover my focus.’ He and Pam lived on a secluded farm in Colorado called the Mad Dog Ranch, after his classic Mad Dogs and Englishmen LP. Happy in his isolation, the former wild man enjoyed nothing more strenuous than fishing and walking his dogs. Cocker was honoured in 2007 being made an OBE for services to music by the Prince of Wales The past six years have delivered three albums. The latest, Fire It Up is a bluesy affair that gives full reign to that familiar voice. He did however let his old raucous approach take control on the title track, over the years. Being heard to say, making pop records gets harder with age. He was never much of a songwriter, so would rely on other people. If the Seventies Johnny Winter 1. Johnny Winter was born John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014) Winter was an American blues guitarist, multiinstrumentalist, singer, and producer. Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Johnny Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas, on February 23, 1944 Winter, and his younger brother Edgar (born 1946), were encouraged from an early age by their parents in their musical pursuits. Both brothers were born with albinism. Both began performing at an early age. When he was ten years old, they appeared on a local children's show, Jonny playing ukulele and singing Everly Brothers songs. Jonny’s recording career began at the age of fifteen, when his band Johnny and the Jammers released "School Day Blues" on a Houston record label. Jonny was inspired by Musicians such as B.B King and Bobby Bland. Winter would tell of a B.B King concert he and His brother attended when they were still teenagers and were the only white people in the Audience, you can imagine how they would have stood out. Winter’s climb to superstardom started in earnest when he first met and jammed with Mike Bloomfield in December 1968. Bloomfield invited him to sing and play a song during a concert with Al Kooper at the Fillmore East in New York City. As it happened, representatives from Columbia Records were at the concert. Winter immediately impressed with a rendition of B.B. King's "It's My Own Fault" to thunderous applause. Within weeks, he was signed for $600,000 reportedly the largest sign on fee for the recording industry. The album featured a few selections that became Winter signature songs, including his composition "Dallas", John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl", and B.B. King's "Be Careful with a Fool". The album's success coincided with Imperial Records picking up The Progressive Blues Experiment for wider release. The same year, the Winter trio toured playing several rock festivals, including Woodstock. Brother Edgar was added as a full member of the band. During this phase Winter recorded his second album, Second Winter, in Nashville in 1969. The double album, which featured only three recorded sides (the fourth being blank), introduced a couple more numbers which would become Winter staples. This included Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited". It was at this time Johnny entered into an intimate, albeit short-lived affair with Janis Joplin, which culminated in a concert at New York's Madison Square Garden, where Johnny joined her on stage to sing and perform. In 1970 the band disbanded when Brother Edgar formed his own band Edgar Winter's White Trash, Johnny Winter then formed a new band with the remnants of the McCoy’s—guitarist Rick Derringer, bassist Randy Jo Hobbs, and drummer Randy Z (who was Derringer's brother, Originally to be called "Johnny Winter and the McCoy’s", the name was shortened to "Johnny Winter And", this also went on to be the name of their first album. This signaled a move to a more rock-oriented direction for Winter. Winter's progress stalled when he sank into haze of alcohol and heroin addiction. Later after seeking treatment for, and recovering from the SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 addiction, Winter fronted the music press to discuss the addiction candidly. By 1973, he returned to the music scene with the release of Still Alive and Well, a basic blend between blues and hard rock, whose title track was written by Rick Derringer. His comeback concert at Long Island, New York's Nassau Coliseum featured the "And" line-up minus Rick Derringer and Bobby Caldwell. Also performing on stage was Johnny's wife Susie. Winter has worked and recorded with artists such as Vince Gill, Sonny Landreth, Susan Tedeschi, Edgar Winter, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks. His last album, Step Back, features appearances by Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Leslie West, Brian Setzer, Dr. John, Ben Harper and Joe Perry. Winter was found dead in his hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland, on July 16, 2014. Two days after his last performance, at the Cahors Blues Festival in France on July 14, at the age of 70The cause of Winter's death is not clear. Winter was dogged throughout his career, by bootleg recordings and unauthorized re-releases of singles from his early pre-Columbia Records days. According to one biographer, only about fifteen percent of Winter's commercially available recordings are legitimate, leaving 85 percent that he had no control over. Some of the releases were doctored with later overdubs by other musicians. Royalties were not Winter's primary concern, "I just don't want that bullshit out ... It's just bad music". It was here he met fellow reprobates, the renowned "Nacho Mamaz Blues Band" and later became their resident drummer. Tucked away in Bridgetown is someone who could be best described as a quiet achiever! Tracey Barnett has shyness even on stage that belies her immense talent" "Tracey Barnett is a rare example of a young woman who can, single headedly, walk onto any stage, grab the audience and take them on an uplifting journey ..... This is original roots and blues at its best" Susan Clarke, Dingo Beach Music SOUTH WEST BLUES CLUB NEWSLETTER Home of the Blues in the Southwest South West Blues Club Inc. www.southwestbluesclub.org ABN 94 629 189 676 PO Box 1833 Bunbury 6231Bunbury WA 6231 West Australian solo dynamo Tracey Barnett is as wild and unpredictable as Mother Nature. Armed with stomp box, acoustic guitars, harmonica and her incredible vocal range, Tracey takes to the stage with unstoppable energy and a smile that lights up the world. Her unique blend of blues, roots and country acoustic rock is best compared with idols such as John Butler and Xavier Rudd. Tracey has the ability to woo any crowd, be it intimate and laid back, or more upbeat and rockin’. Passionate about sharing her own uplifting and inspirational songs, Tracey often brings forth her own versions of popular tunes for some audience participation. Her career began back in 2008 busking on the streets of her hometown at the Blues at Bridgetown Festival. Here she was spotted by a touring musician whom then asked Tracey to open for a few of his shows throughout the South West. She jumped the opportunity and was blown away by the response from the crowds and the venues. Within a few months she was performing her own shows throughout the area. In 2010 she released her first EP 'The First of Many', which received dual nominations in the West Australian Music Awards. By 2012 her hectic performance schedule encouraged her to quit her 'day job' and turn to music full time. Since then she has toured much of WA, supported the likes of Donavon Frankenreiter, performed at a string of festivals and released her second EP 'Blooming' (August 2013). The standout title track has attracted plenty of music industry attention including a nomination for West Australian Song of the Year and finalist in the MusicOz Australian Independent Music Awards. Don't miss an opportunity to catch Tracey Barnett in her element ...... live in your hometown!
