Major Highlights:
The Business Administration program offers study in finance, management, marketing, entrepreneurship/small business
management, international business, management information systems, computer forensics, computer information
systems, fraud examination, and general business. The focus is undergraduate education in this student-oriented learning
environment. Hands-on learning, full student participation, and technology are integrated throughout the Business
Administration program. Neither narrow nor vocational in its approach, the course work includes critical and logical
thinking, communication skills, creative problem solving, innovation, decision making, and theoretical, technical, and
professional skills. Business policies and practices both reflect and help form the ethical, global/international, and moral
foundations of a society; business both draws upon and contributes to knowledge and understanding of the world. In
recognition of this, the Department of Business Administration educates its students to be discerning, responsible citizens
of both the business community and our democratic society. The theoretical aspects of business are grounded in social
sciences such as economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The Business Administration
curriculum is therefore broadly conceived. It prepares students for entry into the business world or for graduate study, and
offers them a liberal education that will contribute to their intellectual, personal, and ethical growth.
Employment Areas:
The "Occupational Outlook Handbook" reports that advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales
managers held about 623,800 jobs in 2008. These managers were found in virtually every industry. Sales managers held
about 56 percent of the jobs; about 62 percent of sales managers were employed in wholesale trade, retail trade,
manufacturing, and the finance and insurance industries. Marketing managers held approximately 28 percent of the jobs;
the professional, scientific, and technical services, and the finance and insurance industries employed around 32 percent of
marketing managers. About 27 percent of advertising and promotions managers worked in the professional, scientific, and
technical services industries and wholesale trade. Around 48 percent of public relations managers were employed in
service-providing industries, such as professional, scientific, and technical services; public and private educational
services; finance and insurance; and healthcare and social assistance.
Projected Demand for Business Administration Majors in Minnesota:
MnCareers reports that the job outlook for advertising sales is good with average earnings of $19.90 an hour. The job
outlook for customer service representatives is very good and they are earning an average of $16.70 an hour and financial
counselors are earning an average of $26.60 an hour with a very good job outlook as well. MnCareers also reports that
loan officers earn an average of $27.70 an hour with a good job outlook.
Projected Demand for Business Administration Majors Nationwide:
The DISCOVER guidance system reports that the nationwide demand for financial planners is expected to grow rapidly,
with a 4.1% expected growth rate per year, with an annual starting wage of $52,500 in 2011. According to the National
Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the average annual starting wage of a baccalaureate candidate as a
management trainee or entry-level manager is $43,279 annually in 2010-2011. In addition, NACE reports that in 20102011 the average annual starting wage for bachelor’s degree in sales was $42,126.
Placement Information for Business Administration Graduates:
There are many career opportunities for Bemidji State University business administration graduates. Of the Bemidji State
University 2009-2010 business administration graduates, 87.9% reported obtaining related employment within one year of
graduation. This does not include students who were not seeking employment, furthering their education, unavailable, or
had unknown status. According to the 2009-2010 BSU Graduate Follow-Up Study, BSU business administration majors
earned starting salaries between $30,000 and $40,000. Management Information System is a recent addition to BSU
and therefore more statistics about the graduates are not available at this time.
