Authors have different reasons for
writing. They may write to persuade,
inform, entertain, or express thoughts
and feelings. They may have more
than one purpose for writing.
 You can draw conclusions from what
the author writes to help you
determine the purpose or purposes
for writing.


You can adjust the way you read based
on the author’s purpose. If the
purpose is to entertain, you may want
to read faster. If the purpose is to
inform, you may want to read more
slowly.
The atmosphere or feeling of a
written work is known as its mood.
Types of moods include romantic, sad,
eerie, and dreamlike.
 Often the mood of a story is apparent
by the author’s selection of setting
and the description of the characters.
 Descriptive details also help set the
mood of a story.

You can sometimes use your knowledge
of prefixes to help them determine
the meaning of an unknown word.
 For example, the prefix re- means
“again” or “back” and the prefix mismeans “wrong” or “bad.”
 Add one of the prefixes to the
following base words and write a
definition for the new word.

