Math 101: Teaching Math, Common Core
Teaching Math, Common Core will explore the common core standards and the new college and career
readiness standards for Mathematics and the major shifts in mathematics instruction that these standards
warrant. A lesson demonstrating research-based instructional strategies for teaching estimation with
benchmark values will be presented. Participants will practice teaching this lesson during the training session
and will be assigned to report on their experiences teaching the lesson in their classes.
• Review and understand the college and career readiness standards for Mathematics content and
practices and the shifts in mathematics instruction as it will affect instruction in the GED classroom.
• Explore research-based strategies for instructing estimation using benchmark decimal, fraction, and
percent values and practice teaching these strategies.
• Explore resources for instructors to use to enhance learning with adult learners.
Set goals for implementation of research-based strategies for instruction of estimation using benchmark values
into your (instructor’s) classroom and program.
Math 102: GED 2014 - Algebra and the New Calculator
Math 102 will focus on Algebra, the new calculator, and the new GED. The algebra portion will cover patterns,
functions, graphs and how they work together. Various teaching techniques will be modeled. The calculator
session will include website and overhead materials available. Using the calculator in context will also be taught.
Questions similar to questions students will encounter will be discussed and helpful strategies in teaching will be
given.
EDU 101: Educator Essentials: Data Construction: Building Knowledge with Data
The 2014 GED test will integrate reading, writing, and math in each area. Data and graphic skills will be assessed
in math, science, and social studies. The calculator will be used in each of these areas as well. This training will
provide participants with information about the major changes in the science and social studies tests.
Participants will learn how to use the calculator to answer questions in math, science, and social studies. They
will also learn how to teach their students to construct different types of graphics to build their content
knowledge and data interpretation skills.
WRI 101: Teaching Writing, Common Core
Teaching Writing, Common Core will explore the common core standards (CCS) and new college and career
readiness standards (CCRS) for Writing Language Arts. We will explore the major shifts in writing instruction
regarding the new extended response elements in the 2014 GED test, as well as dealing with concepts such as
Depth of Knowledge. Participants will discover multiple resources available for preparing teachers and students
for the 2014 test. Instructors will leave with an implementation plan for preparing adult learners for the
REASONING THROUGH LANGUAGE ARTS portion of the test which is aligned with the Common Core State
Standards.
WRI 102: Mining the Constructed/Extended Response
Join us for an in-depth exploration and strategic practice in preparing your students for the Reasoning Through
Language Arts Reading area of the GED 2014, as well as formulating responses to both the Science and Social
Studies extended response areas of the test. Teachers will leave this session with strategies and techniques inhand, as well as resourceful ideas to explore other texts that can be used as supplemental reading/writing
material in the classroom. Teachers who will be teaching Reading, Social Studies, or Science will find this session
very helpful.
EDU 102: Recruiting, Orientation, Assessment and Instruction
EDU 102 will discuss recruitment and retention strategies for students to help increase and maintain enrollment
in your classroom. During this session we will explore intake and orientation options with emphasis on transition
from acquiring a high school equivalency to the world of work and/or postsecondary programs. Each participant
will receive training to meet the CTB/McGraw-Hill certification requirements on the best practices of
administering, scoring, and interpreting the TABE 9/10. Participants will learn how to use the results of
assessments to determine appropriate student goals, group and individual instruction.
REA 101: Teaching Reading Common Core
Teaching Reading, Common Core will explore the common core standards and the new college and career
readiness standards for Reading Language Arts. The major shifts in reading instruction will be explored as well
as researched-based strategies to integrate reading and writing skills. Participants will discover many resources
available for preparing teachers and GED students for the New 2014 GED test. Instructors will leave with an
implementation plan for preparing adult learners for the Reading Language Arts section of the New GED test
which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
DAT 101: NRS Data Management and AEMS
Effective data management is a critical component to successful Adult Education and Literacy programs. Having
a clear understanding of data can result in improved student persistence, motivation, and performance.
Teachers are the “front line” of program performance. This workshop will remove the mystery, empower
teachers and staff to play an active role in data management, and provide them with tools to help them work
smarter not harder.
 Identify the characteristics of good data collection procedures
 Describe NRS requirements for assessment, goal setting, and follow-up procedures
 Use data reports to impact student progression and program performance
 Analyze and evaluate own classroom data and make a plan for improvement
