World’s first warm-blooded fish named "Opah" identified We have always been taugh that reptiles, amphibians and fish are cold-blooded while Birds and mammals are warm-blooded but it will be surprising to know that Scientists have discovered the first fully warm-blooded fish "Opah" The opah is the first fish species found to be fully warm-blooded, circulating heated blood throughout its body much like mammals and birds The fish, found in the waters off the US, Australia and several other countries, generates heat by constantly flapping its fins and has developed an internal “heat exchange” system within its gills to conserve the warmth The secret lies in a specially designed set of blood vessels in the fish’s gills, which allows the fish to circulate warm blood throughout its entire body. The system is similar to that used by mammals and birds, which are known as endotherms for their ability to maintain body temperature independent of the environment. Scientists create history by developing world's first artificial molecular pump Scientists have developed the first man-made molecular pump, this artificial molecular pump can transports key proteins that cells need to function, that could be used to power artificial muscles. The new machine mimics the pumping mechanism of life-sustaining proteins that move small molecules around living cells to metabolize and store energy from food. Artificial molecular pump draws power from chemical reactions, driving molecules step-by step from a low-energy state to a high-energy state - far away from equilibrium According Fraser Stoddart from the Northwestern University the molecular pump is radical chemistry - an ingenious way of transferring energy from molecule to molecule, the way nature does They intend to use the energy stored in their pump to power artificial muscles and other molecular machines What actually happens? Under normal circumstances the ring-shaped molecules repel one another The artificial pump is able to syphon off some of the energy that changes hands during a chemical reaction and uses it to push the rings together The tiny molecular machine threads the rings around a nanoscopic chain - a sort of axle - and squeezes the rings together, with only a few nanometres separating them. At present, the artificial molecular pump is able to force only two rings together but in future they can extend its operation to tens of rings and store more energy. However compared to nature's system, the artificial pump is very simple India and Vietnam Sign a Joint Vision Statement on Defence Cooperation India and Vietnam signed a Joint Vision Statement on Defence Cooperation for the period 2015-2020 The Statement was signed by the Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar and the Vietnamese Minister for National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh at the end of the delegation level talks in New Delhi An MoU on cooperation between the Coast Guards of the two countries was also signed in the presence of the two Defence Ministers. NRI scientist Latha Venkataraman created a single-molecule electronic device Indian-American scientist Latha Venkataraman and his team has created a singlemolecule electronic device which is a molecular diodes that perform 50 times better than all prior designs. This research group lead by Latha Venkataraman is the first to develop a single-molecule diode that may have real-world technological applications for nanoscale devices. Since the electronic devices are becoming smaller every day, the field of molecular electronics has become more critical in solving the problem of further miniaturisation.Single molecule represents the limit of miniaturisation. Latha Venkataraman said "It is amazing to be able to design a functioning single molecular circuit" Single-Molecule experiment: A single-molecule experiment is an experiment that investigates the properties of individual molecules. Since individual behavior of molecules cannot be distinguished, when we have bulk collection of molecules only average characteristics can be measured. Single-molecule experiment supplied many new details on the measured processes that were not accessible in the past. Indeed, since the 90s, many techniques for probing individual molecules were developed.
