Sociology Weekly Current Event Assignment
It is important that you not only master the content knowledge from this course, but also learn to relate this course
to everyday life. Many of the articles that you will research will be topics discussed or mentioned in class, but they
might dive deeper into that subject than we may have time for in class.

Current Event Assignments are due Friday (unless specified otherwise).
You will be assigned a Friday to present your article to the class.
You will only be assigned one current event so make sure it is good, they will be worth a quiz grade
Must be written neatly in blue or black ink or typed and include a copy of the article.
The article must be at least 6 paragraphs.
Must use complete sentences and proper grammar and punctuation. This is a formal writing assignment
(A paragraph is at least 5 sentences!)
7. Articles should be no older than December 2011 and should relate to the Sociology Curriculum. (Use the
textbook for ideas of sociology topics….Culture, diversity, social structure, adolescence, adulthood,
deviance, etc.) Find an article that interests you!
8. Use a valid news source! If you are not sure if your source is acceptable please ask me before you
complete and submit the assignment. You may use Newspapers, Magazines, or Internet news sites. (Do
NOT use Wikipedia or other random Google results!)
Your weekly current event assignment must follow the format below…
-Your Name
-Article Title, Author, and Source (5 points)
-Article Date (5 points)
-Summary Paragraph: (25 points)
Without copying from the article describe what the article is about. You should use your own words. Please do not
plagiarize.
-Type of Sociology Paragraph: (25 points)
What part of sociology does your article relate to? (Look at your chapter titles in your notes if you need help)?
Explain how your article relates to this type of sociology. Include key vocabulary terms used in the article that we
have discussed in class or relate to the course.
-Reaction Paragraph: (25 points)
This paragraph should tell us what you thought about the article. You may want to answer these questions in your
reaction:
- Why did you choose this article?
- How did this article affect you?
- What would you do if you were in this situation?
- Why did you like or dislike the article?
- Who could benefit from reading this article?
- Do you think this article is an important topic for kids your age? Why or why not?
-Presentation to the class: (15 points)
You must present your article to the class spend about 2-5 discussing what your article is about and how it relates
to what we talked about in class.
