The program is implemented during Eidul Azha, the second greatest annual festival of the Muslim worldwide. It falls on 10 th Zilhajj every year elsewhere in the world while it is on the 9th Zilhajj in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, the day being the day of Pilgrimage (Hajj). The occasion, according to Islamic Shariah, is the Eidul Azha festivities extending over three consecutive days (10-12 Zilhajj): the 10th Zilhajj being the Eid Day for saying prayers in congregation followed by animal sacrifice program while the two other days are for animal sacrifice only. The significance of the program is reflected in the term ‘sacrifice’. because Muslims all over the world stage a display of sacrifice for their fellow brethren who are not well off by sharing wealth/resources with then in different forms including sharing meat of sacrificed animals including cows, goats, buffaloes, sheep and so on. The festival is celebrated as a festival of sacrifice for God and His creations following the footprints of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), the father of the Muslim Nation Who displayed highest level of sacrifice by offering to slaughter His dearest son at the command of Allah (SWT). This project was designed to feed the poor Muslims and their family members, help them participate in the joys of the happy Eidul Azha, help the poor and needy in general in removing their poverty, malnutrition, ill-health and so on. A little more will also do the same for his/her family members as well. As a development partner of Bangladesh Government the IAB has been implementing a number of charity, welfare as well as development programs at grass root level in different regions of Bangladesh since its inception in 1990. These include: non-formal education, health and sanitation, orphans support, Iftar feasting, Zakat, Sadaka and Fitra collection and distribution, Qurbani and frozen meat distribution, emergency relief and disaster management programs and so on. The organization has over the last two decades gained adequate experience and expertise of implementing such programs with the help of its experienced and committed staff members. In Bangladesh, most of the poor families do not have enough earning to arrange even their daily meal; therefore, they cannot imagine performing qurbani as their religious duty. Such people below poverty line now count about 50% of the total population who have less than $2 income/day and are called ultra-poor including such people who are extremely needy called destitute (about 25%) who are homeless/shelter less, jobless and victims disasters like cyclone/flood, monga (acute food and employment crisis in northern Bangladesh) and so on. These poor and needy people cannot afford to fulfill their daily minimum calorie need and eagerly await the day of Eid-ul-Azha hoping to pass a happy day sharing something with their rich and well off brethren of faith. They expect the solvent people to come forward with assistance for them on the occasion of Eid. The unlucky distressed people cannot eat meat even once in a month even perhaps a year. In this context, the animal sacrifice program has special importance. Through this program we hope to stand by the indigent and hard-core poor people with our limited capacity. Qurbani Program may bring a flash of smile to their lips on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Islamic Aid Bangladesh will perform qurbani on behalf of donors in different locations and will distribute the meat among needy and helpless poor. We distribute about 1 to 2 kg of meat for each family and thus about 9,825 families will be supported under this program. Objective With the broader framework of development, this charity oriented nutrition program mainly aims: 1. To fulfill nutritional needs of the poor and ultra-poor for 3 days 2. To ensure participation of the poor/needy and well off families alike in the joys of the festival of Holy Eidul Azha 3. To strengthen the bond of fraternity between the rich and the poor Service Components With a view to achieving the above mentioned objectives, the following components will be implemented under program: 1. Qurbani awareness discussion meetings at central and field levels 2. Sacrifice of 20 cows and 50 goats 3. Distribution of Qurbani meat among the poor and needy According practice in Bangladesh, the commonly available animals for qurbani program like bulls and goats were purchased from local markets at competitive rates and were slaughtered on Eid Day and the following day. The meat was distributed among the target population with cooperation of different stakeholders/community leaders.
