Sermon: 1 Peter 1 Scripture in Blue: The Voice We rest in hope, endure in salvation, believe the truth, and love in response to God’s goodness. 1. Introduction • Who is this Peter o He was one of the first disciples chosen by Jesus o He was part of the group closest to Jesus o He was the leader of the disciples after Jesus was resurrected 1 Peter, an emissary of Jesus the Anointed One, to God’s chosen people living as aliens scattered among the unbelievers in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 2I am sending this letter to those who have been selected and destined by God the Father and made holy by God the Spirit that you may be obedient to Jesus the Anointed and purified by the sprinkling of His blood. May grace and peace beyond all reckoning be yours. 2. Hope in the face of trials leads to glory with Jesus Slides #1 & #2 3 Blessed is God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One! Because He has raised Jesus the Anointed from death, through His great mercy we have been reborn into a living hope—4reborn for an eternal inheritance, held in reserve in heaven, that will never fade or fail. 5Through faith, God’s power is standing watch, protecting you for a salvation that you will see completely at the end of things. 6You should greatly rejoice in what is waiting for you, even if now for a little while you have to suffer various trials. 7Suffering tests your faith which is more valuable than gold (remember that gold, although it is perishable, is tested by fire) so that if it is found genuine, you can receive praise, honor, and glory when Jesus the Anointed, our Liberating King, is revealed at last. 1 3. Hope is in our salvation that was spoken by the prophets—all creation has been waiting. This hope helps us endure during hard times. Slide #3 13 So get yourselves ready, prepare your minds to act, control yourselves, and look forward in hope as you focus on the grace that comes when Jesus the Anointed returns and is completely revealed to you. 14Be like obedient children as you put aside the desires you used to pursue when you didn’t know better. 15 Since the One who called you is holy, be holy in all you do. In Leviticus God gave an indication of the purpose of the Law and Peter now quotes it o It was given that we might understand what holiness means o It reveals the character of God o We are to be like Him if we are to fellowship with Him We are never good enough, but God makes a way for us Slide #4 16 For the Scripture says, “You are to be holy, for I am holy.” 17If you call on the Father who judges everyone without partiality according to their actions, then you should live in reverence and awe while you live out the days of your exile. Paul tells us in Philippians 2 that we are to think like Jesus Slide #5 5 In other words, adopt the mind-set of Jesus the Anointed. Live with His attitude in your hearts. Remember: 6Though He was in the form of God, 2 He chose not to cling to equality with God; o He gave up everything to be a man for our benefit o We are to love like Jesus o We are to live obediently like Jesus Paul tells us in Ephesians 1 that God’s plan for our salvation was imagined before there were even people to sin 4. We trust in God, which means we believe what He promises will be true. Slide #6 21 Through Him, you’ve been brought to trust in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him for the very reason that your faith and hope are in Him. 22 Now that you have taken care to purify your souls through your submission to the truth, you can experience real love for each other. 5. We are called to love one another. Peter tells us to demonstrate that love. We love because of what God has done for us. Slide #7 So love each other deeply from a [pure] heart. 23You have been reborn— not from seed that eventually dies but from seed that is eternal—through the word of God that lives and endures forever. 3
