Topic – Happy Habitats
Week 1
Project Question 1:

How will you care for your bean plant to make it grow?
Notes:
This half term the project is to grow your own bean plant! Imagine if your plant grows
magical golden beans! To begin with you need to find out how to care for a bean plant
so that it grows healthy and strong.
Key points to talk about with your child:

Where would be the best place to put the bean plant?

Should you move the bean plant around?

What will you need to give the bean plant?

Where can we find out about bean plants?

How will you check the plant is growing and healthy?

How can you help it if it looks unhealthy?
The next project question will be set later this half term. Your work should be kept at
home until the final week. During the final week you will present your project to the
class along with your plant, a picture or a photo of it! If it doesn't do well you can still
show us what happened to the plant and tell us why that might have happened! This is
the week beginning on 18th May.
You can present your ideas in any way. You may like to…

Create models of the things the plant needs.

Draw a picture of where you will keep the plant.

Keep a diary of your bean plant and record how tall it grows in centimetres
and when you may have given it something or done something to it.

Draw pictures of the bean plant as it grows.

Make a model and label it.

Create a report on what a plant needs.

Create a picture board.

Or come up with your own way!
When the project is presented the children will give out awards for Confident Speaker
and Homework Hero. Complete all homework for a reward! Homework books must be
at school every Thursday.
Spelling Challenge 1:
At school I have been learning to spell words which have the sounds:
Jacks and Pirates:

ar (start the car)
e.g. remark, argue, garden.
Dinosaurs:

oa (goat in a boat)

ow (blow the snow)
Boots:

ee (what can you see)
e.g. clown, gown, frown.
e.g. throw, grow, glow.
e.g. tree, sheep, feel.
This work must be brought and presented to the class on Thursday 7th May, next
week. Help your child to collect words you hear, or use this week, that contain these
sounds. The children with the most interesting word will earn an extra ticket for
the prize box and wear the homework hero medal!
To show your work to the class you could...

Make a picture board using pictures you have drawn, cut from magazines or
printed from the internet.

Write the words for your child with the sound missing for them to fill in. e.g.
thr___, gr__, bl__.

Write a story using the words.

Or you can come up with your own way to show the class!
We will share this work with the class on Thursday 7th May! Completed homework
earns you one ticket for the prize box!

Project Question 2:
What are the different parts of a plant and what do they do?
This week you need to explain the different parts of a bean plant and what they do.
You might need to research on the internet, use a book from home or the local library
or talk to an adult at home.
Key points to talk about with your child:
1.
What parts are the biggest or longest?
2.
Which parts can you see?
3.
What parts may be hidden?
4.
How many parts are there?
5.
What shape is that part of the plant?
6.
Why might it be that shape?
7.
How does what a plant need to live and grow affect its shape or parts?
Keep caring for your bean plant because we would like to know what happens! If you
bean plant has not done well, don’t forget that it doesn't matter as you can draw
picture and explain what might of went wrong! The project needs to be brought to
school on Monday 18th May to present to the class!
