Fountain County is located in West Central Indiana. It is bordered
by Warren County to the north/northwest, Tippecanoe to the
east/northeast, Montgomery to the east, Parke to the south, and
Vermillion to the southwest. Interstate Highway 74 and U.S.
Highways 41 and 136 cross the county. Elevation is 600-750 feet.
The landscape features oak and hickory trees. A variety of land
surfaces are found. Along rivers and creeks the land is slightly
sloping to steeply sloping, and elsewhere it is nearly level. The county
pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area.
Fountain county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST.
Average daily temperatures are 14٥/33٥ in January and 61٥/86٥ in
July. Annual precipitation is about 38 and snowfall 15-25 inches.
Typically the first freeze of the season occurs October 10-15. The
last freeze varies from around April 25-30 in the west and May 1-5 in
the east. The growing season lasts about 158-173 days.
Agriculture activity is mainly in grain and soybeans. About ninetenths of the land is farmland and about four-fifths of that is in
commercial crops. Additional crops are hay and winter wheat.
Livestock includes hens/pullets, cattle/calves, and hogs/pigs. Main
natural resources include construction sand, gravel and forestland.
Water resources include Clingan Mill, Downs, and Hemlock Lakes
and the Wabash River.
Communities include the cities of Covington (the county seat) and
Attica. Towns include Hillsboro, Kingman, Mellott, Newtown,
Veedersburg and Wallace.
