What actions of God do you see portrayed? • 1 Chron. 16:10-12 (NIV) Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. [11] Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. [12] Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, Focus on God’s Attributes • Neh. 9:17 (NIV) They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiffnecked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Holiness • To be holy is to be distinct, separate, in a class by oneself. – primary meaning: separateness – ancient word that meant, ‘to cut’ – more accurate would be the phrase ‘a cut above something. Holiness • The one who is holy is – uniquely holy – with no rivals or competition • God is transcendentally separate – He is far above and beyond us – He seems almost totally foreign to us Holiness • When you come face to face with the holiness of God, how does this impact your daily life? God Prayer Together • As a class and as individuals, let’s pray and praise Him for His holiness, for His awesome attributes • Pray aloud just short prayers … a sentence or two • As you feel led – pray aloud and praise God for Who He is • _______ will open, start us off • I will close Focus on Cleansing • Contrast God’s holiness with our sin stained lives • In the passages that follow – Look for sins we consider “acceptable” – Look for things we tolerate … even though they are sin Focus on Cleansing • Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIV) There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: [17] haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, [18] a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, [19] a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. Focus on Cleansing • Proverbs 8:13 (NIV) To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. • Zeph. 1:12 (NIV) At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, 'The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.' Focus on Cleansing • 2 Cor. 12:20-21 (NIV) For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder. [21] I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged. Focus on Cleansing • Ephes. 4:31 (NIV) Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Focus on Cleansing • What of our affections and priorities can revolve around people and things more than Jesus? What kinds of things can be more important to us than Jesus is? • In what ways do our actions, words, motives and attitudes sometimes not honor God? Grieving the Holy Spirit • To grieve: ‘to afflict with deep sorrow.’ • Eph 4:29 – 31 ‘Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only such a word that is good for edification according to the need at the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Praying Together • In what areas of our lives might we return to old ways and grieve the Holy Spirit? • As a class and as individuals, let’s pray – Ask God to search us – Show us common place sins – Help us to be willing to confess – Lead us into an attitude of brokenness and repentance.
