Birth
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born Mary
Wollstonecraft Godwin on the 30th of August, 1797, in
London, England. Born to the celebrated feminist (and
author of A Vindication of the Rights of Women) Mary
Wollstonecraft and William Godwin (author of An
Inquiry Concerning Political Justice).
Childhood
Shortly after her birth, Mary’s mother died
She had an older sister named Fanny.
Her father remarried later, and Mary gained a stepsister
and a cruel stepmother.
Mary’s stepsister and close friend died, and Mary
became depressed.
Adulthood
Mary eloped with Percy Bysshe Shelley.
They later had two children; Clara, who died, and her
son, William.
After Clara died, Mary’s depression returned.
Mary also suffered a bad miscarriage.
Death
Mary died of old age at fifty-four, on February 1,
1851. She is buried in St. Peter’s Churchyard in
Bournemouth, Dorset, England.
