COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE TITLE: Agricultural Power Systems INSTRUCTOR: Scott Miller Assistant: Sonnie Pickens COURSE DESCRIPTION: To be prepared for careers in agricultural power, structural, and technical systems, students should attain academic skills and knowledge; acquire technical knowledge and skills related to power, structural, and technical agricultural systems and the workplace; and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, industry certifications, and industry expectations. To prepare for success, students should have opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and technical skills in a variety of settings. This course is designed to develop an understanding of power and control systems as related to energy sources, small and large power systems, and agricultural machinery. Dress Code: This class will be conducted in the classroom, vocational shop, and in the outdoor environment. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the shop and/or the outdoors. No open toed or open heeled shoes are allowed in the shop and/or during outdoor activities (ie. No flip flops). No shorts are allowed while working in the shop or being involved in most outdoor activities. This is for the safety of the student(s). Be sure to dress warm on cool mornings. Work not meeting teacher standards may be turned back to be redone until it meets teacher standards. Students will be expected to work to their best potential. Major exams will be conducted on announced dates. It is the student’s responsibility to collect missed work. An “M” will be recorded in the grade book on the due date or ASAP after the due date. If the absence was excused the “M” will be replaced with earned grade. book as a zero until made up.) Missed assignments can be found on the student’s class page at www.bookeragscffa.org . Most classroom assignments will be turned in through the students school assigned gaggle account. The student will use the class period and assignment name for the subject of the assignment. Work will be returned if not titled properly. The assignments will be graded and returned back to the student. It is the student’s responsibility to save the assignment on the school server for future use. Instructions will be provided on how to do this. A grade will be given as the student(s) work on a project as well as when the project is completed. Projects will be graded as shop work as the students progresses on the project from day to day. The completed project will be graded as an exam or project grade. The grade will consist on progress the student makes toward completing the project as well as the work completed on a daily basis. In order to keep on a schedule out of class time may be necessary to complete shop projects. Students will also work on LDE’s and CDE’s in order to improve leadership skills through the ag program. The LDE’s and CDE’s may or may not relate directly to the Ag Structures class but they will improve the skills and knowledge necessary to make the student a better leader. SAE’s / FFA All students will have a Supervised Agricultural Experience project. Each student in agricultural classes must maintain a record book as mandated by the Career and Technology Division of the Texas Education Agency. Booker Ag. Sc. students will use an internet based record book system (www.theaet.com). Some class time may be available each six weeks for students to update record books; however, most of the time students will be expected to update record books outside of class time as homework. FFA is considered a co-curricular organization, not extra-curricular, and grades can be awarded for FFA activities. FFA contest and meetings are held throughout the year and students are expected to participate. FFA activities are an extension of the classroom. FFA, SAEs, and classroom instruction all work together to make for a more comprehensive learning experience. A further understanding of FFA and SAE’s can also be found on the Ag web site. www.bookeragscffa.org In order to meet deadlines, and in the interest of keeping students active, and interested, contest and shop projects students are involved in may, or may not, be directly involved with Agricultural Power Systems but will be designed to enhance the leadership skills and knowledge of the student. Fund Raisers: Members will be required to sell 10 boxes of fruit and 10 boxes of Meat for the FFA Fundraiser, or pay $5.00 per box to meet the requirement. These funds are used to make purchases and operate the FFA for student activities and events. Booker Ag.
