Chang - Instructor Exams (500 points) Online Tests [300 points] In the first part of the semester you will take 3 exams online [100 points each]. Exam questions may be taken from class discussions, cases, and assigned textbook readings. The exam can include multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, and essay questions. You will take the sections of the exam online via Blackboard and we will not meet in the classroom. I will provide specific instructions for each exam beforehand. Please remember that there will be no make-up exams, unless you had a valid and documented University excuse. Comprehensive Exam [200 points] At the end of the semester, a comprehensive exam will be administered online. You cannot substitute or be exempted to take the exam. The exam will include all the course material and specific instructions will be provided after Spring break. Class Activities (500 points) All students are encouraged to attend all classes. I encourage discussions of particular topics and/or textbook cases [please check the course schedule]. Moreover, prompt arrival to each session will be appreciated. Chapter Quizzes (150 points): I will use TEN quizzes (15 points each) to assess your reading and understanding of the textbook. Quizzes will be online on Blackboard. The quizzes will be due the night after we meet in class to discuss the chapter [check the calendar of activities]. Cases (150 points): during the semester you will work in pairs (or trios) to answer questions related to the NINE assigned cases. For getting the grade [25 points per case], you bring your typed answers to the class and do additional in-class work. You case will not be graded if you are not in class unless you have a valid university absence. Your top 6 cases will count toward your final grade. Simulation [200 points] Country Manager is an online simulation where you have the opportunity to experience many of the challenges faced by top management teams in the real world. The simulation access costs $39.95 and you can pay using a credit or debit card. Please check with me if you lack one. The simulation provider will contact you by the middle of February as the practice rounds start in the first week of March. If you do not register on time, you will not take part on the simulation and you cannot substitute this portion of the course grade. You will work on a virtual team that includes students enrolled in Strategic Management. I will assign teams as it happens in the corporate environment [e.g. you cannot choose your co-workers unless you own your own business or you are the CEO of the company]. In the event that you are registered in both courses, your grade will count for both courses. Please be advised that if you do not work with your team, your grade will suffer. Also, your team can fire someone who does not contribute to the team. The fired individual will get a zero in this portion of the course grade and he/she cannot be hired by another team. Due to the direct competition, your team must enter the decisions before the due dates [check schedule on the last page]. The simulation will be graded as follows: Multiple Choice Quiz Peer Evaluation Simulation Team Performance 3 Progress Reports Total 20 [individual based] 30 [individual based] 60 [team based] 90 [team based] 200 points . Students are required to read and understand what is stated in the syllabus. In the event of typos/mistakes found after it is distributed, amendments will be given. For example, a student will receive a B if he/she has less than 899.0 points. Once final grades are released, no extra credit or assignments will be allowed at the end of the semester for students to change their grades. Unless there is a calculation mistake on a particular activity or exam, I do not discuss or answer individual questions related to grade changes (e.g. D to a C, etc.) once final grades are released. Students can ask questions and feedback related to what is needed to improve in future assignments as assignments will not be re-graded. Discretionary points: Over the semester, I will give bonus opportunities to compensate points lost in other course activities Policies and Regulations Make-up exams and assignments: Use of Blackboard and online communications NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES, ASSIGNMENTS, and NO LATE WORK are accepted. You have to check with me for solutions about missing quizzes or assignments when you have a valid and properly documented university excuse. Otherwise, you will not receive points for those missing assignments. Also, if you failed to work with your simulation team, your grade will be reflected by the peer review evaluation. You need to sign a form to access your grades online. In addition, I email students when additional information is needed so checking your e-mail is highly important for your class performance. ADA Statement If you need accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements, please inform me immediately after class or in my office. To request academic accommodations (for example, a note taker), students must also register with Disability Services, Student Union building, Suite 2181 (870.972.3964). It is the campus office responsible for reviewing documentation provided by students requesting academic accommodations, and for accommodations planning in cooperation with students and instructors, as needed and consistent with course requirements. For other ASU resources for students with disabilities, go to “Disability Services” on the ASU homepage. Cell Phone and Electronic Devices Policy If you bring a cell phone into class, you are expected to turn it off or set it on buzz mode. In addition, please do not engage in a text messaging behavior as it becomes distractive. TEN Points will be deducted from your final grade without warning if I see you using your cell phone. A similar situation will be applied if you bring an electronic device [laptop, tablet, etc.] and you use it for purposes not related to the course. There are no exceptions to this policy 3 Strategic Management 4813 Syllabus Spring 2013 Dr. Erick P.C. Chang - Instructor Weather and Campus Closures: Schedule for Country Manager Simulation We will follow ASU information related to inclement weather. Online registration from TUE Jan 29th to TH Feb 7th: You need to have a valid debit or credit card. The simulation costs $39.95. The simulation provider will email you the instructions. You only pay the simulation access and you do not need to buy the manual or the Wall Street Journal subscription. Policy for Absences Only University approved absences will be accepted. If a graded activity is missed, the student must have a University excuse and provide proper documentation to support the absence. When students are aware that they must miss a class for a legitimate medical or university-related reason, they must provide the instructor with written documentation BEFORE the day in question. If students miss an activity due to an unforeseen emergency totally beyond their control (auto accident on way to school, etc.), they must provide written documentation of the reason for the absence and/or provide a way for the instructor to verify the cause of the absence. The instructor reserves the right to reject excuses that are not legitimate as defined above. All unexcused absences will result in a 0 for the missed activity.. Those going to job interviews out of town need to check with me for their options of missing a particular assignment.
