Physical Spiritual Intellectual Emotional Social Occupational/ Environmental A healthy body maintained by good nutrition, regular exercise, avoiding harmful habits, making informed decisions about health and seeking medical assistance when necessary. 1 • Are you part of the obesity epidemic? 2 • Do you exercise at least every other day? 3 • Are you practicing preventive self-care? The sense that life is meaningful and has a purpose; the ethics, values and morals that guide us and give meaning and direction to life. 1 • Believing in a higher power has genuine medicinal value. 2 • Living by the Serenity Prayer is cheaper than Cymbalta. 3 • Accepting that we do not have all the answers is a sign of real maturity. A state in which your mind is engaged in lively interaction with the world around you. It involves continued learning, problem solving and creativity. 1 • Read a good book lately…with paper pages or on a Kindle? 2 • “When we stop learning, we’re dead.” Consider going back to school. 3 • If you are not challenged at work, have you considered volunteering? The ability to understand your own feelings, accept your limitations, achieve emotional stability and become comfortable with your emotions. 1 • One in ten of us are on antidepressants. Nearly $125 million is spent in advertising. 2 • One in four women suffer from depression. 3 • By 2030, more people will have depression than any other disease (WHO) The ability to relate well to others, both within and outside the family. It encourages contributing to a healthy community by supporting a healthy living environment and initiating better communication with others. 1 • Social isolation has become the norm. “Won’t you be my neighbor?” 2 • Emails and text messages have reduced interpersonal communication. 3 • “Happy Hours” are selfmedicating us and at times interfering with medications. It reflects the fact that personal health depends on the health of the planet. Environmental wellness also requires learning about and protecting yourself against environmental hazards. 1 • Smoking has decreased from nearly 1/3rd of us in the 1980s to less than 1/5th now. 2 • Do you recycle? Take a walk with your dog and a bag. 3 • Avoid “toxic” people. They increase your cortisol levels.
