Capital Chapter of IFMA Professional Development Grant
The purpose of the Professional Development Grant is to:
 Provide financial support for Chapter members to enhance their FM education
 Promote FM professional development through earning IFMA credentials
 Encourage recognition for developing professionals
 Provide visibility for the Chapter and support Chapter membership retention efforts.
Eligibility






Applicants must be currently enrolled (or completed in the past twelve (12) months in
courses which lead to the IFMA Facility Management Professional (FMP), Sustainability
Facility Professional (SFP) credential, or Certified Facility Manager (CFM) credential.
While membership in the Capital Chapter of IFMA is not mandatory to be eligible for the
grant, it will be a consideration in the review of the applicant’s package.
Grants are available to all Chapter members. Board members may apply for the grant, but
must recuse themselves from the review and decision-making process.
An applicant is not eligible to receive a grant if they have been awarded a grant from the
Chapter within the past twelve (12) months.
Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from an employer or instructor
whom acknowledges the student’s interest in facility management.
Applicants must submit a letter of professional intent describing the individual’s short and
long-term career goals in facility management and the significance of the IFMA
credentials. Explain how the credential(s) may support you in your career goals. Please
limit your letter to 300 - 500 words.
Structure
 Award: $500 for the application year; paid by check to the selected individual.

Scholarship Awarded:
Annual Capital Chapter Awards Event
 Budget: Chapter to ensure funding in Professional Development line.
 Promotion: Scholarship will be promoted through bi-weekly announcements,
newsletters, and IFMA Capital Chapter e-News.
 Management: Submissions will be received by the Capital Chapter Professional
Development Team and forwarded to the Review Committee.

Review: Committee will consist of one (1) Executive Board member, one (1) member of
the Professional Development Team, and one (1) member of another Capital Chapter
Team. The Committee may also include a representative of the eligible educational
programs.
Decisions: Committee decisions, once accepted by the Board, are final.

Professional Development Grant
Application
The Capital Chapter Professional Development Grant is awarded on the basis of merit with
consideration for financial need. Scholarship applications are evaluated on
achievements/accomplishments, involvement, letter of intent, and recommendation. Please refer
to the chart provided at the end of the application form for a definition of points assigned to each
category.
Applicants have sole responsibility for ensuring accuracy and compliance. Decisions of the
judges are final and applicants will be notified of results by mail or email.

Involvement in Facility Management Related Activities
Please describe your facility management-related activities or experiences. This should include
any IFMA/Capital Chapter activities or experiences, employment and FM academic project
courses.
Letter of Professional Intent
Please attach a letter of professional intent describing your short and long-term career goals in
facility management or related competency. Please do not describe what you have done, but
what you plan to do in your FM career and how the education you are pursuing will support your
short and long-term career goals. Please limit your letter to 300 – 500 words.
For example, the letter of intent would include short and long term goals within the profession
and how the credentials support these goals. These may include positions/titles within a
corporate/institutional setting; they may include potential growth along the FBPTA Federal
Government career stream; they may also include research/sales/consulting goals, either within
a specific organization or some future organization where you have interest.
Resume/CV
Please attach a copy of your resume/CV outlining your work history. List principal jobs you have
held in the past, including military service, in chronological order with the most recent first.
Include the name of each organization, your title/position, a description of responsibilities and
period of employment. (Limit: 2 pages)

Letter of Recommendation
Please ask a recent employer, professional colleague, or instructor to write a letter
recommending you for a grant. The correspondence should highlight performance characteristics
that demonstrate your FM skills and potential future success in the profession.
If the recommendation is submitted via email, it must come from the evaluators email account.
If submitted via hard-copy, the evaluation must be on company letterhead/stationery and
personally signed by the evaluator including a phone number where he/she could be reached.
