Family Educational Rights

Privacy Act 1974
FERPA
 A federal law governing the privacy of educational
records.
 Grants specific rights to students and puts
restrictions on how schools may handle educational
records.
 Requires that schools obtain written permission from
students before releasing educational records.
2 Types of Educational Records:
 Directory Information
– Schools may disclose this info without written
consent of the student
(name, address, telephone number, email address,
dates of attendance, etc.)
 Non-Directory Information
– Schools may NOT disclose this info without written
consent of the student
(any record not classified directory information)

 This private information must not be released to
anyone, including parents of the student, without
written consent from the student.

Paying for Classes
Financial Aid
Financial aid is money that is given, paid or
loaned to you to help pay for your
college or vocational training.
See the Financial Aid Guide for Instructions.
3 Types of Financial Aid
 Grants & Scholarships - are given as awards and do not
require repayment. (*)
 Loans - are borrowed from Direct Lending. You are required
to repay the loan amount, fees, and interest. You should see a
Loan Offer on your Campus Connect. You must accept the
loan offer to start the loan process. Please see the Financial Aid
Office if you do not have a loan offered.
 Work-Study Employment – is a job at a college where you can
earn a paycheck to help pay for
your tuition and fees.

 Spring Deadline: January 4, 2011
 Students not paid or participating in a payment plan by this
date will be dropped from classes immediately following
the tuition deadline.
 Students registering after Jan. 5: Must pay or make payment
arrangements at time of registration.
 $50 late fee added to accounts beginning Jan. 5

Getting Your Refund
Ivy Tech Debit Card
Verify that your address is correct on Campus Connect.
Follow the directions with the card to make an election on
www.ivytechdebitcard.com:
1. Either authorize the card for refunds to be loaded
on it
2. Or, elect to have refunds deposited into your
personal checking account.
Getting Your Refund
If you choose to have your refund put on the
card, do not use it until the refund has been
loaded onto your card. Check Campus Connect
for this date (several weeks into the semester).
