Acadia University – Located in the town of Wolfville. Land of orchards, vineyards. Engaging and
encompassing university. Accepts students till the program is full. Rolling admissions. EAP bridging
program for students who need English studies. Issues Co curricular transcript from the university. This
shows employers, grad schools etc. the extra curricular activities that the student participated in. This is
in additional to the degree. The university President meets every first year student to find out his/her
needs for the next four years.
Bishop’s University- Presenter Katie. English university located in Eastern Quebec. 2400 full time
students. Most of the students live on campus. In a recent poll 97% of senior students want to come
back. Offers Environmental Sciences. Ranked #1 for overall engagement in North America.
Brock University – Presenter Matthew Melnyk mmelnyk@brocku.ca . Located one hour from Toronto
in St. Catherines, Niagara Region. Known for unique programs like Sports Management. National
champions in rowing. Offers Med Plus Program. Has six faculties- Applied Health Sciences, Faculty of
Education, Goodman School of Business, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Mathematics and Science and
Faculty of Social Sciences. Student population of 18,000. Repeat courses will accept higher mark. Yes for
alternate offers.
Capilano University- Presenter Kelly Alsanowicz kaslanow@capilanou.ca Check out the Counsellors
Resource Guide. New – Counsellors-only Admissions Hotline 604 986 1911 ext. 7466. New blog- Your
Daily Cap based on student and faculty perspective. Feb. 5 is Capilano Counsellor session. Mark your

Carleton University – Approximately 27000 full and part-time students. House of Commons Page
Program. Dec. 9 is the deadline to apply. Repeat courses will accept higher mark. Yes for alternate
offers. Challenge exam marks for languages: not sure.
Concordia University - All classes in English. Students can take courses in French. English university in
Quebec. Located in Downtown Montreal. 500 programs within 4 faculties. Montreal is cited as the Best
city for student living. Concordia known for Case Competitions – the business school. Concordia has
partners with 140 to 150 universities in 34 countries. Engaged school. Concordia has a young feel.
Market driven. Progressive. Strong in Coop. Do three work terms for almost 1 year. These are paid
positions. There are no unpaid internships. Two campuses- Western and Downtown. Engineering –
specialty in Aerospace. The big ones are Fine Arts and John Molson School of Business. Concordia does
not need provincial exams for admission.
Dalhousie University- Presenter Kurtis. Dalhousie merged with former Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
Offers Pre-Vet and agricultural studies. New majors in Ocean Sciences and Medical Sciences. The major
in Medical Sciences is for those who are bound to med school. New building for Ocean Sciences. 60 new
minor programs. See page 14 and 15 of viewbook.
Emily Carr University - Updates
1. New Campus. Completion date 2016 on Great Northern Way. Entire campus will shift from
Granville Island.
2. Portfolio based on theme of community. For current Gr. 12s if one or two pieces are based on
this theme it is okay. For Gr. 11s for next year their portfolio has to be entirely theme based.
3. Minor in degrees in addition to the degree program.
4. Two year Certificate programs.
5. Application deadline is Jan. 15.
6. Feb. 1 is the deadline to submit portfolio. Digital submission only.

New Design Building – Wilson School of Design. Received donation from Lululemon.
General admission changing for 2015 intake. New criteria- Minimum Engligh 12 with a C+ or Comm. 12
with at least an A for three faculties – Arts, Business and Science.
They don’t have online self-reporting.
Lakehead University – Presenter Alex . Located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Closest university in Ontario to
BC residents. But flights go to Toronto, so this takes longer to get there. Access bursary of $800 , based
on living over 700 kms from the Thunder Bay or Orillia campus. Strength- Environmental Studies,
Forestry, Engineering. Very popular program is engineering for students transferring from BC programs.
Repeat courses will accept higher mark. Yes to alternate offers.
McMaster University – Presenter Candy Hui huikw@mcmaster.ca Located in Hamilton, Ontario. 25000
students. Mid sized university. Majority of the programs don’t use personal statements except few like
the Bachelor of Health Sciences. Building a brand new Engineering building. For admissions will not look
at Gr. 11 marks. Honours Bachelor of Arts in Justice, Political Philosophy and Law is pending ministry
approval. Repeat courses will accept higher mark, provided they repeat less than two times. Online
course must be completed by June. Will accept med tem mark. Challenge exam marks for languages: will
not accept.
Mount Allison University- Presenter Devika Pandey depandey@mta.ca New major in Philosophy,
Politics and Economics Program (PPE). Announced 51 st Rhodes scholar. Produces a large number of
Rhodes Scholars.
Queens University – Wendy Smith wendy.smith@queensu.ca Located in Kingston, Ontario. 30,000
population in Kingston. 22,000 students are at Queens. Castle in England. Two new residences in 2015.
In Ontario they are moving towards a two year Bachelor of Education Program. Isabel Bader Centre for
the Performing Arts opening in 2014. Guaranteed scholarship- no application required . 90 to 94.9%
Excellence Scholarship $1500 - $2000. 95% Principal’s Scholarship $8000 over two years. Open to
international students. For repeat courses take higher mark. Any missing Gr. 12 marks, will use the Gr.
11 mark provided the student is enrolled in that Gr. 12 course. Challenge exam marks for languages: will
accept.
Saint Mary’s University - Comprehensive. Largest business school in Atlantic Canada. Coop option for
every Liberal Arts majors. Extensive study abroad programs. Has students from over 106 countries.
Located in Downtown core of Halifax. Neighbors to Dalhousie.
Simon Fraser University – Big Change: For Entrance Scholarships the GPA is based on program specific
four grade 12 courses (Earlier it was English 12 and 3 best Gr. 12 courses). Beedie School needs
supplemental application like before. New Program: Bachelor of Environmental Science. SFU is the only
international body to join NCAA.
St. Francis Xavier University: 4200 students. Small campus. 90% of first year students live on campus.
They are on the hunt for a new President. Small town feel. Profs.
Thompson Rivers University: 10,000 students on campus. International students from over 100
countries. Hard deadline to apply for nursing is January 15. For open admission programs the early
deadline is March 1 and regular deadline is April 30. New admission requirement: All degree programs
require BC English 12 or English 12 First Peoples with 73% or LPI level 5 (earlier it was level 4). They have
a club team for Women’s Golf. May 16, Friday is counsellor day on campus. Vancouver counsellors can
catch the bus from Abbotsford.
Trent University: Has two campuses. One in Peterborough and other in Oshawa. Over 7800 students.
Small university. Ranked # 1 by Mcleans in Primarily Undergraduate Category in Ontario overall. New
Programs starting in fall 2014- Kinesiology, Social Work, Water and Aquatic Science. Guaranteed
residence for all first year students.
Trinity Western University: Has New President. Three things about TWU- education –how to get a
degree, transformation- how this will help them, Impact- in this world. Has two at risk species on the
property. Nov. 29 and 30th are preview days for students.
University of Alberta: one of the Top 5 universities in Canada. Has international reputation due to
excellence in research. State of the art research facilities. Excellence in teaching too. 40 Professors
received 3 M teaching awards. For highlights see the green counsellor booklet. Changes- students can
now pick only two program choices. For early admission look at a combination of Gr. 11 and 12 final
marks (no interim mark). Final admission is based on final marks of five Gr. 12 program specific courses.
Moving towards tuition deposit ($500). On payment of the deposit students can register for courses.
New admission requirements for the Faculty of Science- No matter which specialty same five Gr. 12
courses will be used for admission. May 1 application deadline. April 30- apply by April 30 for
guaranteed residence. Nov. 16- Early admission workshop for students in Vancouver. Students need
Physics 12 to take university level Physics.
University of Calgary: Received 40 million dollars in donation. New residence building. So can offer multi
year residence guarantee. $60,000 scholarship plus guaranteed admission to Med. School. Launched
School of Performing Arts. Counsellors can sign up online for newsletters. Admissions – two pathwaysFormal early offer 90% or more from Gr11 year, apply by Dec. 15. March 1 deadline for standard
admission.
University of Guelph: Nicola Gazzola ngazozola@uoguelph.ca has undergraduate population of 18,239.
Mid sized university. $10000 Food Science Award – was not awarded because nobody applied for this.
University of Guelph has best food in Canada. Accepts online courses. For repeat courses will accept the
higher mark.
University of Guelph Humber: Melissa Hunter Melissa.hunter@guelphhumber.ca Humber college is by
Pearson Airport. UofGH is listed under University of Guelph in OUAC. Offers 7 degrees. Need minimum
GPA of 75%. $135 application fee for initial 3 program choices and $44 for each additional university
program choice on OUAC. Collaboration between Humber College and University of Guelph. Located in
Toronto. Small classes. Average class of 49 students. Residence not guaranteed. So apply early.
Deadline to apply for residence is June 2nd. Accepts online courses. For repeat courses will accept the
higher mark.
University of King’s College – Halifax: Partnership with Dalhousie University. Students can take a lot of
courses at Dalhousie. Well known for two things- 1. Journalism- Bachelor of Journalism with Honours.
One year of Journalism. Masters of Journalism. 2. Foundation Year- Interdisciplinary. English ,
Philosophy, Sociology, History etc. in first year. New- Masters in Fine Arts.
University of Manitoba: Most students go into University 1. This allows students to experience class
before choosing a program. Most faculties require minimum marks in University 1 in order to apply.
Students can take any program from this except Music and Fine Arts. Engineering is a lot more
competitive. Needs 85% GPA. Arts tuition is only $3800.Guaranteed scholarship program- with 95 to
100% GPA receive $3000 in scholarship. So combined with this tuition comes to under $1000. Opened
new segment of underground tunnels. Opened new football stadium.
University of New Brunswick: Jessica Fullarton jstotesb@unb.ca One campus in New Brunswick and
another at St. John. Apply online. Oldest English speaking institution in Canada. 75% of research
happens at UNB, New Brunswick campus. 75 undergrad and grad programs.
University of Regina: Phil Ollenberg Phil.Ollenberg@uregina.ca Job Guarantee Program launched in
2009. Students are guaranteed a job in six months. If not brought back for job search skills etc. This is
available in any Bachelors Degrees. 97.5% of grads had careers related in their areas based on survey in
2009.
University of Saskatchewan: Kristen Major Kirsten.major@usask.ca 22,000 undergrads in 13 different
colleges. Engineering needs above 80% GPA. Apply by Feb. 15 for engineering. Top 400 to 500 students
are ranked. There is change in engineering program. Now competitive. Another popular program that is
competitive is Kinesiology. Apply by Feb. 15. Saskatchewan Resident Program - $20000 in tax rebate .
Lots of jobs in this province. Veterinary Medicine- 20 spots each for BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
University of Fraser Valley: Holly Zonneveld holly.zonneveld@ufv.ca New: shuttle between
Abbotsford and Chilliwack campus, wrestling team, Teacher Education Program has secondary school
option as well as elementary, new facility for agriculture underway, Bachelor of Arts in Economics,
Global Studies in BA. Apply online only. No more paper application.
University of Toronto: Emily Nicotera Emily.nicotera@utoronto.ca Three campuses. Finding the right
fit is the key for choosing a university. Scarborough and Mississauga campuses offer a sense of
community. Scarborough focuses on experiential learning. Mississauga offers a wide range of Arts,
Science and Forensic programs. St. Georges campus has more programs and professional faculties.
Concurrent Teacher Education Program suspended. Students can no longer apply to this program. They
are building a new program. Repeat courses: Will accept higher mark except Engineering and Rotman
Business Faculty at St. George campus. Engineering will offer students a chance to explain why they
repeated a course. Scarborough and Mississauga campuses make alternate offers. St. George campus no
alternate offers. Challenge exam marks for languages: will not accept.
University of Victoria: Has a new President- Professor Jamie Cassel. New Centre for Athletics complete
with a climbing wall. Will be completed in Spring 2015. Engineering has a minimum requirement for
Pre- Calculus 12, 73%. Second language for Humanities is under review. Gr. 11 marks will be looked at in
Phase 1. Students must self-report in Second Phase Feb. 1 to March 31 to be considered for academic
entrance scholarships. GPA of 85% or higher will receive scholarships. Themed environment in
residence.
University of Waterloo: 29000 undergraduates. BASE Program- for international students. 8 to 12
months English Bridging Program. New Program in Health Promotion. Accounting and Financial
Management (AFM) has eliminated their 2 entry streams. Repeat courses: higher mark except
engineering. Challenge exam marks for languages: will accept.
Vancouver Island University: Joanna Hesketh Joanna.hesketh@viu.ca Online application open from
Oct. 18, same day as open house. Open admission for Art, Business and Science. So apply early. New
online teaching program. Nursing has brand new lab. Competitive admission. Residence is not
guaranteed for first year students. They have sturgeons on campus. Parents hand book-checklist for
parents. Engineering Transfer Program is moving towards one year certificate program. 2.5 GPA or
higher are guaranteed a spot at UBC and U.Vic. New - Bachelor of Science major in Geoscience. They
don’t have self reporting system. So students need to send in a transcript.
Western University: $135 application fee for three choices. Located 2 hours west of Toronto. Residence
guaranteed for first year students. 100 years of varsity sports history behind them. Guaranteed
Scholarship Program. Repeat courses will accept higher mark. No alternate offers. Will look at self-
reported grades. Will accept online courses. Challenge exam marks for languages: will not accept for
GPA.
King’s Western University: 3500 students. Big destination for international students. 88 module options
at Kings including Major/Minor Thanatology (Death/Dying, Grief and Bereavement). Repeat courses will
accept higher mark. No alternate offers.
Laurier : In a poll, 95% expressed satisfaction with the university. New: Bachelor of Social Work. Repeat
courses will accept higher mark. No penalty for repeating a course. Challenge exam marks for languages:
will accept.
York University : Sonia Cianfarani soniac@yorku.ca One campus in Toronto and another at Glendon.
4th largest university in Canada, second in Ontario. Most students from BC are interested in Business
School. New: The Lassonde School of Engineering has added Mechanical Engineering and Civil
Engineering. The Faculty of Health has added Global Health, BA and BSc. Repeat courses will accept
higher mark. Yes for alternate offers. Will accept online courses. Students must self-report and provide
the final mark.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology: Oshawa. Two campuses in Oshawa. Fairly new school.
Opened 10 years ago. All students get a laptop every two years. At the end of studies, can buy it for a
dollar. Suspended: Concurrent Education Program. Residence guaranteed for first year students. Apply
June 2nd. Will accept marks for online courses provided there is an official transcript from the provider.
Note: The western universities that were present said they will accept online courses provided they are
completed by June 30. 50% of the mark must be completed by April 30th so that they can appear in the
TRAX.
