Effective Teaching “Lesson Plan”
To be completed with the following requirements: teach a lesson cooperatively with field-based
supervisor and teach a lesson independently.
NAME: Alex McCann______________________ Grade/Subject: 7 th PE_______________
DATE: 3/31/10____________________________ School : Vermillion Middle School____
Rationale (Why is what you plan to teach important and why have you chosen it?)
This lesson will build upon basketball skills learned in the previous lessons including dribbling and
shooting
Content (What you will teach): Students will begin with their daily warm-ups of 2 laps and stretching.
Students will then be performing four different basketball stations. At station 1 students will be
practicing ball handling. They will dribble between cones for the length of the court while being timed.
Students are to keep the ball on the outside of the cones crossing over when necessary. One second
penalties will be assessed to their time if they have the ball in the wrong hand or lose control of their
dribbling. At station 2 students will be playing lightning with the winner of each game recording their
name. Station 3 consists of free throws. Students should use proper shooting techniques with feet
shoulder width with a slightly staggered stance and shooting hand foot forward. Shooting foot should be
lined up with the center of the rim and a routine can be applied. Station 4 is the hotshot contest. Students
are to shoot from discs placed around the basket ranging from two to three points for a made basket and
one point for hitting the rim. The shooter has one minute to shoot as many shots as possible and cannot
shoot from the same spot twice in a row. A five point bonus will be given if a shot is taken from each
circle.
K-12 Standards (What South Dakota Department of Education Content Standards apply to this
lesson): Standard 1, Indicator 1, Benchmark A and B, Indicator 2, Benchmark A and B, Indicator 3,
Benchmark A and B
Standard 4, Indicator 1, Benchmark A,B, and C, Indicator 2, Benchmark A,B, and C, Indicator 3,
Benchmark A,B, and C
Instructional Objectives (What will students be able to do or know because of your lesson?
Students will have a better sense of ball control along with better shooting techniques.
Materials (What will you use? i.e. textbook, handouts, technology tools, and resources, etc.):
Basketballs, basketball hoops, cones, stop watches, and sheets to record times, points and lightning
winners
Procedures (How will you teach the content? the sequence of teaching activities including set and
closure to lesson): Students will come together as a group and each station will be explained with
demonstrations at the necessary stations.
Evaluation (How will you determine if and/or what students learned from the lesson?)
To determine if the students learned what was taught they will be able to perform each station and if they
are able to perform the tasks later in the basketball unit.
