THE GRADUATE SENATE: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What is the Graduate Senate?
The Graduate Senate is the representative body for the graduate students of Northeastern University. It
serves as a forum for the communication of our concerns and needs and is the liaison between the
graduate student body and the university administration. The Graduate Senate promotes the enhancement
of graduate student life.
What are the powers of the Graduate Senate?
Collectively, the Graduate Senate has the following duties, powers and responsibilities:
- Represents the voice of the graduate student body to the university administration on such issues
as graduate housing, financial aid (SGA stipends), health services (including insurance), and
graduation tuition costs
- Recommends proposed legislation regarding University life and policies related to the graduate
student body to the University President for approval or rejection
- Approves, modifies, or rejects the budget submitted by the Executive Board for the use of
graduate student fees.
- Has the power to initiate and conduct referenda
- Approves or rejects circulation of petitions or referenda by outside individuals or organizations
Is there a time commitment as a Senator?
Yes, you will need to commit, on average, 4 hours each month. This includes Senate meetings,
appointments as they occur with other Senators and Administrators, and GSG-sponsored events. Please
refer to the powers, rights, duties and responsibilities of the Graduate Senate and Each Senator as detailed
at www.northeastern.edu/gsg.
What do I do as a Senator?
Each Senator has the following rights, duties and responsibilities:
- Each Senator serves a term from September to August. However, the Graduate Senate is only in
session during the fall and spring. Each Senator is entitled to one vote. There will be no proxy
votes.
- Each Senator must maintain an effective two-way system of communication between the
constituency he/she represents and the GSG Executive Board and Graduate Senate. Each Senator
is responsible for conveying the concerns of the constituents to the Graduate Senate as well as
relaying Senate information back to their constituencies.
- Each Senator is required to attend the bi-monthly Senate meetings, committee meetings if
committees are formed, and any special Senate meetings, if scheduled.
How do I become a Senator?
Each Senate Nominee is responsible for initiating and completing the process of Nomination for the
Graduate Senate. The Nominee must fill out the Nomination Form and obtain the signature of the
Nominee’s Department Chair or Graduate School Dean Administrator (see below). Although Senators
can be appointed, elected, or nominated by their respective school, self-nominations are the primary
means by which graduate students become Senators. To be eligible to serve in the Graduate Senate, a
student must be in good standing with his/her college and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better. Senators are
encouraged to participate in the graduate student organizations within their departments and colleges.
Senate seats are allotted to the Colleges based on enrollment. For more information, please visit
