Leadership for church growth in the 21st century

A leader must be free from
blame (above reproach).
I Timothée 3.2
The father of many modern
management principles.
Peter Drucker
« There may be "born leaders," but there
surely are far too few to depend on them.
Leadership must be learned and can be
learned …»
1. HE IS A VISIONARY
LEADER FOR
CHURCH GROWTH
There are those that look at things the way
they are, and ask “why?” I dream of things
that never were, and ask “why not?”
Now faith is confidence in what we hope
for and assurance about what we do not
see.
Hebrews 11.1
« He was constantly
asking the question, what
is God actually saying we
should do next. »
Warren Bennis
Leadership is the capacity to
translate vision into reality »

2. HE IS HUMBLE
LEADER FOR
CHURCH GROWTH
William Law
« We are guilty of stealing because we ascribe
to ourselves that which belongs to God alone.
We are also guilty of lying because we pretend
to be that which we are not. »
The heart is deceitful above all
things and beyond cure. Who can
understand it?
Jeremiah 17.9
1. My failures and my sin
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to
take it away from me. But he said to me,
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my
power is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly
about my weaknesses, so that Christ's
power may rest on me.
II Corinthians 12.8-9
I will use them (the nations) to put
Israel to the test. I will see whether Israel
will live the way I want them to. I will see
whether they will follow my path, just as
their people did long ago. The LORD
had let those nations remain in the land.
He didn't drive them out right away. He
didn't hand them over to Joshua.
Judges 2.22-23
The LORD left some nations in the land.
He left them there in order to put the
people of Israel to the test. He did it for
all those who hadn't lived through any of
the wars in Canaan. He wanted to teach
the men in Israel who had never been in
battle before. He wanted them to learn
how to fight.
Judges 3.1-2
The LORD left those nations where they
were in order to put Israel to the test. He
wanted to see whether they would obey
his commands.
Judges 3.4
Lénine
« He who is afraid of recognising his
weaknesses and his failures will never be
a revolutionary. »
Weakness + Humility
is better than
Victory + Pride

overseers and deacons
Philipians 1.1
Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for
them in each church and, with prayer
and fasting, committed them to the
Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
Acts 14.23
If anyone sets his heart on being an
overseer (episkopos) , he desires a noble
task.
Now the overseer (episkopos) must be
above reproach…
I Timothy 3.1-2
Remember your leaders, who spoke the
word of God to you. Consider the
outcome of their way of life and imitate
their faith.
Hebrews 13.17
4. HE IS A MOBILISER
LEADER FOR
CHURCH GROWTH
Peter Drucker
« The only definition of a leader is
someone who has followers. »
Dixon Hoste
« If I wanted to discover whether I was a
leader, I would look behind me to see
who was following. »
Eliashib the high priest and his fellow
priests went to work and rebuilt the
Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its
doors in place.
The men of Jericho built the adjoining
section, and Zaccur son of Imri built
next to them.
Nehemiah 3.1-2
The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of
Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put
its doors and bolts and bars in place.
Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of
Hakkoz, repaired the next section. Next
to him Meshullam son of Berekiah, (..)
made repairs, and next to him Zadok son
of Baana also made repairs.

Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his
mother, who has been a mother to me,
too. v13
Romain 16
Richard Branson
« You will never make a good leader if
you don’t like people. Businesses that
look after their employees are those that
succeed.»
5. HE HAS THE GIFT OF FAITH
LEADER FOR
CHURCH GROWTH
To others the same Spirit gives faith
(the special gift of faith)
I Corinthians 12.9
Leon Morris
“Paul proceeds to speak of things like healing
and working of miracles, so that probably he
has in mind a special faith which is associated
with miraculous operations.”
…who through faith conquered
kingdoms, administered justice, and
gained what was promised; who shut the
mouths of lions, quenched the fury of
the flames, and escaped the edge of the
sword; whose weakness was turned to
strength;
Hebrews 11.36-39
and who became powerful in battle and
routed foreign armies. Women received
back their dead, raised to life again.
Hebrews 11.36-39
The LORD took Abram outside and said,
"Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if
you can." Then he said to him, "That is
how many children you will have."
Abram believed the Lord. The LORD
accepted Abram because he believed. So
his faith made him right with the Lord.
Genesis 15.5-6, 8
But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD,
how can I know that I will gain
possession of it?"
Genesis 15.5-6, 8
Oswald Sanders
“A stolid indifference to danger is not a
sign of courage. The man who does
not know fear cannot know courage.
Paul knew fear.”
FAITH
Believing that it will happen
COURAGE
Acting so that it will happen
6. HE IS PASSIONATE
LEADER FOR
CHURCH GROWTH
But when I preach the good news, I
can't brag. I have to preach it. How
terrible it will be for me if I do not
preach the good news!
I Corinthians 9.16
I wish my head were a spring of
water! I wish my eyes were a fountain
of tears! I would sob day and night
over my people who have been killed.
Jeremiah 9.1
Philip Yancey
“ The giants all had one thing in common:
neither victory nor success, but passion.”
