Isle of Skye Fundraising Expedition
260 km (162 miles) - 14 days - 1 cause
Hello - thank you in advance for reading this. We are Clement Hodgkinson and Toby Roney, both aged
16 and intrepid Explorer Scouts ((11th/9th) Cambridge Scouts – Newnham Explorers Scouts.
This summer from the 30th June to the 17th July, we will be trekking around the Isle of Skye to raise money
for an important cause. Some people need help to experience the senses the majority of us take for
granted. Sensory rooms are very special places for children and adults with special educational needs or
disabilities. We are supporting Impington Village College with their fundraising appeal to build a new
sensory facility which will have a huge impact on the lives of students and the wider community.
The route
The route is made up of two parts; the long distance Skye trail which is 130km long and passes through
some of Skye’s best known mountains, and a return route of another 130km passing the west side of Skye.
In total the trek is expected to take 13 – 14 days, covering between 11.5lm – 28.5km per day. Throughout
the trip a GPS unit will be monitoring how far we walk.
Please sponsor us
It’s a tough expedition but we’re up for the challenge. Please show your support by sponsoring us. All
money raised will be pledged to support the Impington Village College Sensory Room appeal. You can
sponsor us by contacting Sharonne Horlock (see below).
Thank you to The North Face for supporting this cause.

A Sensory Room for IVC
A sensory room provides a therapeutic nurturing environment for children and adults who
experience difficulty processing the world around them.
At Impington Village College there are students with a wide range of additional needs, including Autistic
Spectrum Condition (ASC). Currently we work with thirty four students with a diagnosis of ASC who are
part of the College community. ASC is a lifelong disability that can affect individuals in different ways.
Many experience significant sensory sensitivity which means they find it difficult to understand and interact
with the world around them. These young people would benefit hugely from a sensory room.
We want to create a facility at the College that will;







Be a safe therapeutic space in which individuals can explore the world around them,
Somewhere individuals can learn to interact with people
A place to discover self-help strategies and skills of independence
Space to accept themselves for who they are and be content
Room to develop resilience
Enable improved participation and inclusion
Be welcoming for the College and wider community
We need your support
To make this ambition a reality we need to raise
£30,000.
We have identified an outbuilding within the College grounds that is an ideal location for the sensory room,
however the building needs some work.
To repair and convert the building including installation of new windows, insulation and plastering of walls
and ceiling, new floor and power, will cost £19,000. Once the building work is complete the space will need
to be kitted out with items such as fibre optic lights, music making kit and bubble tubes. The sensory room
equipment will cost in the region of £11,000.
Students, staff and friends of the College are planning different fundraising activities to help reach our
target. We welcome any ideas or input in order to make this project possible.

Donations
If you are in a position to donate cash here is an indication of what your money will buy:
Making a difference
We believe that all young people deserve the support they need to grow and progress in life.
The sensory room is a much needed facility at Impington that will give young people with particular needs a
space where they can develop. The room will provide a calming environment - a safe place to reduce
anxiety, inappropriate behaviour, and stress. It will offer a supportive environment for young people to
explore and grow their communication skills giving them the best chances in life.
