Horation Alger Scholarship * Deadline: October 25, 2013

Amount: up to $20, 000

Requirements: U.S. citizen, full-time high school senior who will graduate in the spring/summer of 2014, 2.0 GPA, exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited public or private U.S. institution, demonstrate financial need

($55,00 or lower adjusted gross family income), involvement in extracurricular activities, display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.

Ron Brown Scholarship Program * Deadline: November 1, 2013

Amount: $40,000

This scholarship is available to African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship * Deadline: November 5, 2013

Amount: Up to $30,000/year

This scholarship is available to high-performing high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend a 4-year college or university. Criteria is as follows: 2014 high school graduate,

intend to enroll full-time in an accredited 4-year college/university beginning Fall 2014, earn a cumulative unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or above, receive exemplary standardized test scores (SAT critical reading/math 1200+ or ACT composite 26+), and demonstrate unmet financial need. Amount: Full tuition at Francis Marion University

This scholarship opportunity is sponsored by the McNair Center for Research and Service at

Francis Marion University and honors the public service legacy of Governor McNair. This scholarship covers tuition, fees, and room and board. Criteria: high school senior with 1100 SAT

(math and verbal) score or 24 ACT score, minimum 3.0 GPA, South Carolina resident, have an interest in a career in public service and be willing to commit to study abroad and service learning opportunities while enrolled at FMU. 2014 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest * Deadline: January 6, 2014

Amount: $500-$10,000

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956. First place winner receives a $10,000 scholarship and an expense paid trip to Boston. Second place winner receives a $1000 scholarship and up to five finalists receive $500 each. Harry Hampton Scholarship * Deadline: January 31, 2014

Amount: $10,000 ($2500/year)

This scholarship applies to students who wish to further their education in the natural resources discipline such as wildlife biology, fisheries biology, forestry or marine science. The recipient will receive the Harry Hampton Scholarship for four years as long as he/she maintains a GPA of

South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program * Deadline: December 1, 2013

Amount: Up to $24,000

This scholarship is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching. It is based upon academic achievement, references, community and school involvement, an interview and a writing assessment. Students must attend one of the eleven Teaching Fellows Institutions

(Anderson University, Charleston Southern University, College of Charleston, Columbia

College, Francis Marion University, Lander University, Newberry College, USC-Columbia,

USC Upstate and Winthrop University) in order to qualify. There are no GPA or SAT/ACT requirements but test scores must be submitted. The SAT code is 3680 and the ACT code is

Boston University Trustee Scholarship * Deadline: December 1, 2013

Amount: Full Tuition

This scholarship is for students who rank at the top of their class who show outstanding leadership and academic abilities. Students must apply online at bu.edu/admissions/trustee.

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award Program * Deadline: December 17, 2013

Amount: $1000-$10,000

The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards are non-renewable scholarships created to recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. The scholarships are valued between $1000 and $10,000. The program was established to raise awareness among the nation’s youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior who will enter his/her freshman year at an accredited two or four year university, college or vocational institute in the fall of 2014 and who owns/operates an established business. York County Genealogical & Historical Society Scholarship Deadline: March 15, 2014

Amount: $500

This scholarship was established in 1999 to give financial assistance to a deserving high school senior. The scholarship is open to public school graduates of high schools in York County.

Applicants must provide evidence of an interest in history or genealogy by writing a 400-500 word essay describing the activities relating to one or both of these areas in which he/she has participated. Must have at least a 3.5 GPA. See Ms. Elmore for an application.

Spartanburg Methodist College Scholars Program * Deadline: June 30, 2014

Amount: Full Tuition

This scholarship is for seniors who will graduate with a 3.0 GPA. Students must complete a

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form by June 30, 2014, in order to qualify.

In addition to this offer, SMC will also allow students to qualify for “Early Decision

King’s College Scholastic Achievement Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who have a final cumulative of 3.5 or higher at the end of their senior year. There is not a separate application for this scholarship. This scholarship is designed for African-American males who are interested in pursuing a career in education. MISTER is an acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role

Models. Applicants must apply and be accepted to one of the participating institutions

(Anderson, Benedict, Claflin, Clemson, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Greenville

Tech, Midlands Tech, Morris College, South Carolina State University, Tri-County Tech,

Dona Livingston Scholarship Deadline: April 30, 2014

Amount: $400

This scholarship was established by the Independence Elementary PTO in honor of

Mrs. Dona Livingston, the first principal of Independence Elementary School. In order to be considered, students must meet the following guidelines: must have attended Independence

Elementary School for at least 3 years, a graduating senior at a high school in Rock Hill School

District #3, demonstrated service and commitment to the community, career goals, financial need and work experience. The scholarship must be spent on college expenses. See Ms. Elmore for an application.

Remember to keep a list of your scholarship offers even if you do not plan to accept them.

We will ask you to provide a list at the final senior meeting. The Class of 2013 received over $9 million in scholarship offers! Come on…the Class of 2014 can do it, too!

COLLEGE FAIR

South Pointe High School will be holding a college fair on Thursday, October 24 th

from 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. It is recommended that you bring a copy of your SAT/ACT scores and transcripts. Ms. Elmore will be on-site from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. to print NHS students transcripts, otherwise, you will need to obtain a copy from your counselor before you attend.

SAT WORKSHOP

SENIOR SUPPLY PACKETS

Senior supply packets will be distributed Oct. 15-16, 2013, during lunch in the A-Building

Lobby. The packet will contain information about how to order your cap and gown, graduation announcements and senior souvenirs. Balfour will be on campus on October 25, 2013, from

“WISE CHOICE” Program

“WISE CHOICE” is a highly successful program designed to allow top performing female high school seniors from around the state to experience life as Clemson University engineering or science majors. The program will be held at Clemson University on Friday, November 8, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Activities include a college classroom visit and an information session. The program is free but students are responsible for their own transportation. Only 3 students from each high school will be selected. Participants must have at least a 3.0 unweighted

Delta GEMS Program

The XI Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta is looking for interested young ladies ages 14-18 to participate in their Delta GEMS Program. Participants will have the opportunity to explore confidence boostings topics and learn about expressing their unique individuality. KING’S COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP DAY

King’s College is inviting students and their families to Open House on January 11, 2014. There will be an opportunity for students to win scholarships. Each year they award four $5000 scholarships based upon the competitive exams given that day. Students and families will be able to tour the campus and residence halls, take the scholarship exam and learn more about financial aid.

NORTH CAROLINA AGRICULTURAL & TECHNICAL STATE

UNIVERSITY

North Carolina A&T State University will host “University Day” on Saturday, October 19, 2013, from 7:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on their campus at the Corbett Sports Center. University Day is an all-inclusive day where students can tour the beautiful campus, interact with students, faculty and staff, learn about academic offerings and attend a football game at a discounted rate. WINTHROP UNIVERSITY

Winthrop University will be hosting “Transfer Tuesday” information sessions in the evening during the fall and winter. These sessions are designed for students who are planning to start at a two-year institution and then transfer to Winthrop University.
