1. WelcomeWelcome back! I hope you had a great summer! For all incoming students, I welcome you to your first regular e-newsletter from
your academic advisor. I will be emailing you the newsletter approximately every other Friday this year. The email contains
important announcements, dates, and other relevant information related to Biology and Chemistry. I am sending this email to ALL
my students, not just Biology and Chemistry majors. I feel the dates and other relevant announcements will be important to all of you
regardless of your future plans. At any time if you wish to stop receiving the newsletter or decide to change schools, email
rhees@purdue.edu and I will remove your name from the email list.

2. Marsha’s Office, Office Hours, Walk-ins
If you have yet to meet me or do not remember meeting me , I am located on the second floor of the Math building. You can check
in to see me in Math room 231. Please do not come straight to my office door since I often will have a student in my office or another
student waiting to see me.
I encourage you to contact me with any questions you might have either by email or in a walk-in. I expect to have daily walk-in times.
You do not need an appointment to meet with me as a walk-in. Walk-ins are meant for quick questions. You can check these times
online at: http://www.science.purdue.edu/Current_Students/advising/advisor-walk-in-schedule.html or by emailing me.
I have other responsibilities as well so please be flexible with your schedules and either stop in during a scheduled walk-in time or
contact me via email.

3. NEW- My Advising Web page and newsletter archive
If you have not emailed me over the summer or read my previous newsletters, then you may not have seen that I now have a webpage!
It contains a short bio about me, my ADVISING SYLLABUS, and an archive of my newsletters, as well as important event
announcements. As you can see by the all caps, please read through my advising syllabus since it lists my expectations of you as my
advisee, as well as what you can expect from me as your advisor.

5. Do your research credits appear on your schedule?
If you are doing research for credit and the credits do not appear on your schedule, contact your advisor during the first week of
classes. Beginning Monday August 31, you will need to get signatures on a form 23 to add any course (including research credits).
====================
6. Add/Drop Course Changes
Week 1 (August 22-30): You may add/drop courses in myPurdue. The last day to add a class in myPurdue is August 30.
Week 2 (August 31 until Sept 7): you may still drop courses in myPurdue, but you may no longer add them or change sections, you
will need a Form 23 from your advisor and obtain the instructor’s permission to add a class.
Week 3 (Sept 8 until October 28): Form 23 needed for further schedule changes.
CHANGING SECTIONS? This is treated like a drop and add by myPurdue. So, during week 2, it will no longer work—you will be
able to drop the old section but NOT be able to add the new section, meaning you may lose your spot entirely. Get a Form 23 from
your advisor to change sections after August 30!
Important Registration Dates
August 30: Last day to add a course or change sections via myPurdue
September 7: Last day to drop a class without a record
September 21: Last day to add/modify a course (instructor and advisor signature required)
September 21: Last day to drop a course with a W
October 28: Last day to drop a course (instructor and advisor signature required)

7. Freshmen in BIOL 135 or 115: Mandatory meetings
If you are enrolled in BIOL 13500, the first year Biology laboratory, you will find a Monday, August 24, 6:30-7:20 pm meeting time
on your schedule. This is an introductory meeting by Dr. Iten and is held only ONCE. It is mandatory as Dr. Iten reviews the course
syllabus and her expectations of the students.
If you are enrolled in BIOL 11500, the Biology Resource Seminar, you will find two evening meetings on your schedule – September
1 and 9, 6:30 – 8:20 pm. PLEASE NOTE THESE DATES HAVE CHANGED IF YOU HAVEN’T CHECKED YOUR SCHEDULE
SINCE STAR. These are mandatory class meetings that happen only on these two dates. These are Alumni panels. More
information below.
====================
8. Alumni Panel Presentations- September 1 & 9
ATTN: ALL Biology or potential majors are welcome to attend. There are two sessions upcoming where our alums return to campus
to speak about what they do, why they like it, etc. It’s an excellent opportunity for you to hear first-hand career information!
This is a requirement for any Biology major in BIOL 11500, so there will be around 200 students attending. The panels end by about
8:15 pm. Come early for ice cream, 6:40 pm!
The first panel is on September 1 at 7 pm in Lilly 1-105. Several speakers have yet to confirm for the alumni panels, but for
September 1st, we are expecting a high school Biology teacher, a P&G researcher, a formulations tech from Covance, and a medical
student.

12. Need to test out of BIOL 12100?
Are you a CODO or transfer student who started in the spring semester? Did you skip BIOL 12100 and now need to test out of the
class? Our departmental policy is that anyone who wishes to test out of BIOL 12100 must do so prior to the second week of their last
fall semester. After that time, no biology major will be allowed to test out of the course. This is to guarantee that if you don't pass
the exam that you will have a chance to register for the course. See your advisor if you have questions.
To take the BIOL 12100 credit exam, you must make an appointment with the Testing Center and have a permission form signed by
your advisor. Please call 765-494-7690 to schedule an appointment.
