Artemis (Diana) The goddess of the hunt, animals, and protector of the people. Myth of Acteon Acteon was a hunter who one day came across Artemis bathing. He watched her with admiration and Artemis saw him doing so. She turned him into a stag, and also set his pack of hounds on him. The myth of Niobe Niobe was a mother of 12 children. She thought she was more superior then Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. This upset Artemis and Apollo so they killed all 12 of her children. The myth of Orion Orion was Artemis’s very first love. One day Orion swam out in the ocean so far his head looked like a rock. Apollo being jealous of his sisters love challenged Artemis to shoot the rock with her arrows. She shot the head of her love Orion and killed him. Background Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto; and sister of Apollo. Diana is her roman name. Apollo and Artemis are twins. She loved music, song, and dancing like her brother Apollo. She was born one day before her brother on an island called Ortygia. Hunting Artemis is known for her bow and arrows that were made by Hephaestus. She would go to uncultivated land with her nymphs and hunt lions, panthers, hinds and stags. She also would protect the animals. Artemis was worshiped throughout Greece, especially in Arcadia.
