Recalibrate
To Take Responsibility for the
Millennial Generation,
We Must Answer The Call To
DISCIPLESHIP
The Youngest Millennials
Pastor Kyle
Recalibrating Our Hearts to:
Ephesians 5:15-21
(NIV)
15 Be very careful, then, how you
live – not as unwise but as wise,
16 making the most of every
opportunity, because the days
are evil. 17 Therefore do not be
foolish, but understand what the
Lord's will is. 18 Do not get
drunk on wine, which leads to
debauchery. Instead, be filled
with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:15-21
(NIV)
19 speaking to one another with
psalms, hymns, and songs from
the Spirit. Sing and make music
from your heart to the Lord, 20
always giving thanks to God the
Father for everything, in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Submit to one another out of
reverence for Christ.
Who here is connected
to Social Media?
Social Media
1997: The Birth of Social Media
2000: The Internet is
Everywhere - Dot.com era, good
or bad, it changed how everyone
does business
2003: MySpace created
2005: Facebook and Twitter
Around 2010: The Rest of the
Pack: every new "app" know to
the human race
My big question is:
What are you trying to say?
Romans 15:16
“To be a minister of Christ Jesus
to the Gentiles with the priestly
duty of proclaiming the gospel of
God, so that the Gentiles might
become an offering acceptable
to God, sanctified by the Holy
Spirit.”
Romans 10:14
“How can they call on the one
they have not believed in? And
how can they believe in the one
of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without
someone preaching to them?”

 You might hear some things
and say, “that’s me”, “That’s
my friends”
• Reach your generation
Millennials are roughly 15 to
30 years old, or even 10-35
Nick is the cut off:
Computers
Internet
Cellphones
Social Media
Smartphones
Tolerance, Equality
Relativity
Individuality
What Millennials Know:
: Our culture taken to an
extreme
Direct Connection
Indirect Connection
No Connection
No Reference/ Self-Reference
Work = Eat
Work + Loan
=
Eat + Homeownership
Work + “Credit Score”
=
Materialism + “American
Dream”
Be Alive + “Credit”
+ “Programs” + Deficit
= Anything, Any time
Work?
Hunger?
Millennial’s Finances
: “Equality”
: More social programs and
more credit = don’t know “can’t
afford”
There are some holes in the map

Millennial’s Finances:
There are some holes in the map
Materialism, Luxury, Beauty,

Influence, Identify with brands
more personally and emotionally
Exceed what may be expected,

2016 - A challenge to stewardship
God is outpouring vision for us in
this area!
 Taking Responsibility for the

Second Second Life
More tech than ever before
 #IRL = "in real

 “Bingewatching”
 Everything is
boring
 NUMB
• Hard to make
great

find great
purpose

CONNECTION
Value relationship - better at it
than us - aren’t gonna buy
"church guy" handing out fliers
HYPE!
Ads incredibly saturated
 They have seen more ads than
anyone ever
 “Influencers”
 “Native Ads”
Extremely critical and skeptical
of hype/ sales
CRITICAL/ SKEPTICAL
The result is a skeptical, critical,
numb, directionless generation
Influencers = even critical of
people and relationships
Most skeptical of patriotism,
spirituality, religion, marriage
Taught to "think for themselves"
on sin, sex, criticizing church,
yet buy entertainment hook,
line, and sinker.
CRITICAL/ SKEPTICAL
A generation, more than any, who
want to think for themselves and
think they do but, more than any,
don’t: Materialism, Luxury,
Beauty, Fame, Status,
Celebrities, Brands
TRENDS TAKEN TOO FAR
Grew up with these cultural
:
 Drug use in MOST entertainment
 Violence Exaggerated
 Christians = haters = conservative
rednecks
 No “judging" -
 nothing is right or wrong, don’t “hate”
 teachers don’t correct
 Don’t judge sexual decisions
 Nothing is off limits if you’re “being
yourself”
 Marriage is out-dated
Exceed what may be expected
considering their youth
DRUGS AND VIOLENCE
 1996: California legalized
medical cannabis
 1998-2000: Oregon, Nevada,
Colorado
 2012: Washington and Colorado
legalized recreational marijuana
 2012-2016 = High School
Historians, sociologists, and
politicians struggling to make
sense of the extreme “mass
violence” events on the rise
THEY DON’T “NEED” CHURCH
But aren’t young people more
rebellious anyway?
Marriage and Sexuality
1963, Average
age of marriage
was 21F, 23M
68% of Millennials
(18-33) are
unmarried

Revelation 17
1 Then one of the seven angels
who had the seven bowls came
& said to me, “Come, I will show
you the judgment of the great
prostitute who is seated on
many waters, 2 with whom the
kings of the earth have
committed sexual immorality, &
with the wine of whose sexual
immorality the dwellers on earth
have become drunk.”
Revelation 17
3 And he carried me away in the
Spirit into a wilderness, & I saw a
woman sitting on a scarlet beast
that was full of blasphemous
names, & it had seven heads and
ten horns. 4 The woman was
arrayed in purple & scarlet, &
adorned with gold & jewels &
pearls, holding in her hand a
golden cup full of abominations
and the impurities of her sexual
immorality.
Revelation 17
5 And on her forehead was written
a name of mystery: “Babylon the
great, mother of prostitutes & of
earth's abominations.” 6 And I saw
the woman, drunk with the blood
of the saints, the blood of the
martyrs of Jesus...15 & the angel
said to me, “The waters that you
saw, where the prostitute is
seated, are peoples & multitudes
& nations & languages...
So Do We Fear These Culture
Trends?
We Have the Advantage and the
Answer if we just live it
So Do We Fear These Culture
Trends?
 Materialism, Luxury, Beauty,
Fame, Status, Celebrities,
Brands
 Numbness
 Critical and skeptical
 Real and authentic
 Connection and relationships
 No church or marriage
No, We’re the Answer!
Matthew 5:14
“You are the light of the world. A
town built on a hill cannot be
hidden.
Cannot Be A PART of What
Plagues Millennials
 Marriages, church, media,
numbness
 A real challenge
No, We’re the Answer!
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does
not make us timid, but gives us
power, love and self-discipline.
We Can No Longer Get Away
with Half-Measures
What we got away with in past
generations
Immature or lazy in the faith
Always being fed, never feeding
Power, Love and Self-discipline
Refute Lies about Marriage with
OUR ACTIONS
 We need to be way better in
our marriages
 Why? - Marriage is THE
metaphor for Christ and his
people
Do Church Better with
OUR ACTIONS
 Gone are the days when
people just came
 New identity - Lead the way in
positive
 Realness and authenticity
 Intentionally make
connections!!!
Critical/ Skeptical
 Skepticism and criticality are
forcing us to be real.
 Forcing us to do church the
hard way not the lazy way.
 Some of what God is trying to
break off and refresh for us
right now at Grace
Critical/ Skeptical
 What is more real and alive
and NOT numb than a
relationship with God when it
is really burning?
 What is more authentic and
powerful than the Godlife when
we are full of purpose and
chasing after it?
Relationship/ Connection
Recalibrate - DISCIPLESHIP:
Taking Responsibility for the
Millennial Generation
They respond to
INTENTIONALITY and
INFLUENCE
Relationship/ Connection
Influence
 authenticity, be honest, to
care about, talk to, pray for
 NOT "influencers" - be the real
you, not “church guy with
fliers”
Intentionality
 take action on purpose
 loving, mentoring, discipling
 go deep, challenge, conflict
Relationship/ Connection
 Children of Christ - we know
Connection!
 What better connection than
Christian fellowship,
accountability, discipleship?
Relationship/ Connection
John 17:23
[Jesus prays] I in them and you in
me—so that they may be
brought to complete unity. Then
the world will know that you
sent me and have loved them
even as you have loved me.
God -> Christ -> Us (Grace) ->
Complete Unity ->
World Knows Christ + Love
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
“Unity and Maturity in the Body of
Christ”
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I
urge you to live a life worthy of
the calling you have received.
2-13 Unity, unity, unity, equip
each other for works of service,
unity, unity
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
14 Then we will no longer be
infants, tossed back and forth
by the waves, and blown here
and there by every wind of
teaching and by the cunning and
craftiness of people in their
deceitful scheming.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
15 Instead, speaking the truth in
love, we will grow to become in
every respect the mature body
of him who is the head, that is,
Christ.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
16 From him the whole body,
joined and held together by
every supporting ligament,
grows and builds itself up in
love, as each part does its work.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
17 So I tell you this, and insist on
it in the Lord, that you must no
longer live as the Gentiles do
{the culture does}, in the futility of
their thinking. 18 They are
darkened in their understanding
and separated from the life of
God because of the ignorance
that is in them due to the
hardening of their hearts.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
19 Having lost all sensitivity,
{toward what?} they have given
themselves over to sensuality
so as to indulge in every kind of
impurity, and they are full of
greed.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
20 That, however, is not the way
of life you learned 21 when you
heard about Christ and were
taught in him in accordance
with the truth that is in Jesus.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
22 You were taught, with regard
to your former way of life, to put
off your old self, which is being
corrupted by its deceitful
desires; 23 to be made new in the
attitude of your minds;
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Ephesians 4
24 and to put on the new self,
created to be like God in true
righteousness and holiness.
... 28 Anyone who has been
stealing must steal no longer,
but must work, doing something
useful with their own hands,
that they may have something
to share with those in need.
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
Matthew 18:8-9
8 If your hand or your foot causes you
to stumble, cut it off and throw it
away. It is better for you to enter life
maimed or crippled than to have two
hands or two feet and be thrown into
eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes
you to stumble, gouge it out and
throw it away. It is better for you to
enter life with one eye than to have
two eyes and be thrown into the fire
of hell.
Cutting The Cord
 Better Marriages
 Better Relationships
 Cutting Out Culture
 More Time and Thought For
INTENTIONALITY and
PURPOSE
Cutting The Cord
A Challenge: Make level paths so that
the lame will not be disabled, but
rather healed
 Uninstall Facebook App (install
Messenger)
 Uninstall Instagram, Snapchat,
Flipboard
 Disable Chrome, Install Firefox with
Add-On “URLFilter”
 Install Internet Filters
 Go Home and Cut Your Cable
 Cancel Netflix, Hulu, Cable
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
 Let’s throw out the junk
 Let’s actually love others as
ourselves (constantly thinking
of them),
 Let’s chase after the big things
God is calling us to
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
 Let’s go into the streets
praying and preaching,
 Let’s go into the hospitals
praying for healing,
 the shelters praying for
wholeness,
 the bars praying for purpose,
 the strip clubs praying for selfworth
Power, Love, Self-Discipline
 Dedicate ourselves,
recalibrate ourselves,
resanctify ourselves for power,
love and self-discipline
 Doesn’t it sound refreshing to
be up working all night on
something for others, to be
passionate again?
The Millennial Generation Requires
Use To Be Real
Spirit Gives Us: Power, Love, SelfDiscipline
Can We Recalibrate Our Individual
Lives to be Disciples?
Can We Stop Just Receiving & Have
Something To Share?
