What is CAREER PREP? High school seniors enroll in courses at Mercer County Community College. An exceptional elective opportunity for students to simultaneously earn high school and college credits. College credits can be applied toward Associate degree programs at MCCC and/or in many cases be transferred to fouryear colleges and universities. Classes begin at the end of August Usually no Friday classes Fall Holidays MCCC does not have days off MCCC – determines snow closures via website (www.mccc.edu) Winter Break – Longer @ MCCC Spring Holidays MCCC does not have days off Spring Break – MCCC in March (High Schools usually March/April) MCCC classes end in May Program Benefits Students will earn up to 12 college credits, tuition free. Students receive transferable college credits upon graduation from their high school. Valuable real-life college experience prior to attending full-time with a liaison to provide transition assistance. Student Responsibilities Students must purchase books and any uniform requirements (tuition is provided). Students must earn passing grades, according to MCCC policy (C and above), in all classes during the 1st semester in order to advance to the 2nd semester courses. Students are expected to behave as if they were full-time, MCCC students. MCTS Career Prep students are treated as if they were full-time, MCCC students. Attendance When a student is absent he/she should follow policies established by the instructor. Parent/guardian must call the Career Prep office and write a note. Absences must not exceed college policy – 3 absences per course before withdrawal from course and Career Prep Program. In college, there are no excused absences! Transportation District provides transportation Transportation may not be available at all times – when it is not, you are responsible for your own transportation! Plan ahead! If you plan on driving to campus, you will need a parking permit from the college. Follow your home school’s driving policy. Drop-off & pick-up for buses is at circle near Kelsey Theatre and Gym. Make sure you are on-time! Student IDs All students must acquire a student ID card at the start of the Fall term. Bring a copy of your schedule to the Information desk in the Student Center. You will have an opportunity to visit the MCCC Security Desk and secure your Student ID tonight with proper documentation. Student ID’s are required to be worn at all times as well as to make use of the library and all other college facilities. Textbooks Bring your course schedule to the bookstore to purchase course books & necessary uniforms. Book fees vary—estimate $200 per semester. Save—Buy used books or rent—when available. The bookstore will be open for you to purchase your textbooks. Withdrawal Contact the Career Prep office and Home High School Guidance Counselor. A failing grade on your permanent college transcript will result from not formally withdrawing from a program. Stopping participation without withdrawing will put a failure on your permanent college transcript. Check the MCCC calendar for withdrawal deadlines in order to avoid failures on your permanent college transcript. Placement Testing All students are strongly encouraged to take the MCCC placement test prior to the end of the Spring semester. This will allow ample time for you to remediate, if necessary, prior to the formal September start of classes, during the Summer Term. Keys to Success Attend ALL class meetings, on-time, prepared, and excited to learn and be involved in the course. Organization is key – maintain a planner Pre-plan your requirements/assignments from syllabus – self- discipline is important (expectations in college are different from high school). Stay in contact with your professors about ALL happenings that will affect your progress/success in course. Time-management – most programs will not have a daily class meeting requirement; however, you will need to balance your time in relation to requirements and optional commitments.
