June 2015 Principal Jackie Firlotte Edition 50 School Website: http://keswickridge.nbed.nb.ca The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes, but in liking what one has to do. James M. Barrie Scottish novelist Last day of School is Friday, June 19th Keep Safe in the Sun! Having fun in the sun is one of the best parts of the spring and summer months, but it can also be dangerous. Children can develop serious sunburns or become dehydrated in the summer heat. Sunburns and spending time in the sun without sun protection has been found to increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. You can use the following safety tips to protect yourself and your children from the sun: • Ensure there is some shade around play areas or use a sun umbrella. • Children should wear a sun hat with a wide brim and back flap, loose cotton clothing, and 100% broad spectrum sunglasses. • Use sunblock with at least 30 SPF on all areas of exposed skin (don’t forget the ears, nose, back of neck, and tops of feet). • Reapply sunblock every two hours, and after swimming. • Encourage children to drink fluids (with no added sugar), especially water. • Be a role-model for children and protect yourself from the sun as well. Signs of Heat Exhaustion: • Thirst • Fatigue • Stomach or leg cramps • Cool, moist skin Adapted from: http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/sun_safety Shawna Simonds,4th Year Bachelor of Nursing Student,Memorial University of Newfoundland Keswick Ridge School has Talent and Glee Club Two tech savvy and energetic parents, Dr. Michelle Cunningham and Alana Montgomery have been busy working with Mrs. Keys to prepare a Glee Club video that will be presented at our Talent Show on Tuesday, June 16th starting at 12:30 with rain date Thursday, June 18th (to coincide with the Picnic). Welcome back to School on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 Guidance Corner-Mr. Van Stone Hello everyone! May was another busy month for guidance at KRS. I have now completed all of my classroom presentations (K-8) on the 7 habits of Highly Effective People. Each presentation has focused on one of the seven habits and students have had opportunities to practice those habits in various settings. As well, the Entrepreneurial Adventure program culminated in a Market held by students at the school on May 27 th. Products sold included customized Adirondack chairs, woods survival kits, pet toys, comic books, wooden swings and trading cards. Over $700 was raised for two charities; Hope for Wildlife and Chat to the Future. Next, the PBIS committee (Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports) met last week and have now targeted a new behavior to work on as a group. That behavior is students getting up and moving around the class without permission. Steps to address this behavior were discussed and this will be presented at the next KRS staff meeting so that the entire staff can work on managing this behavior together in similar ways. In June, I will be presenting the Be Safe kit (two-thirty minute sessions) to K-4 students. Be Safe! is a personal safety program offered through the Canadian Red Cross. Designed for kids aged 5-9, its collection of educational resources focuses on ways to promote children’s personal safety by preventing sexual abuse. As well, I will be presenting the Technology Citizenship unit from Future Goals with the Middle School students to help students become great on-line citizens. Wishing everyone a wonderful June and enjoy the last month of this school year!
