Bad News BIBLE 1-1 1 WORSHIP L C Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy and hear us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen 2 WORSHIP - 2 C. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 3 WORSHIP - 3 L C L C L C L C L C L C L C Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Clothe your ministers with righteousness. Let your people sing with joy. Q. What does this mean? A. We must fear, love, and trust God more than anything else. 11 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION How does the 1st Commandment fit into this discussion? The First Commandment makes our relationship with God exclusive. Between the true God and false gods, we are to love exclusively the true God. But then, that is precisely the trouble. This commandment is in reality the only commandment. Every sin takes something else and treats it like God. That is the sin of idolatry! Whatever we place great value in that is not God is an idol. 12 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION Romans 3: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, All = all! We are sinners. No one looks good to God in and of ourselves. It is only because God wants to love us that we have any hope, any future, any dignity. God wants to love us not because we are lovable, but for the sake of Jesus Christ, so that the sacrifice of Jesus will not have been in vain. This is why we have Confession & Absolution. We sin when we are by ourselves, and the community we belong to sins. 13 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION St. John Chrysostom (354-407) “There is no difference at all between the Greeks, the Scythian, the Thracian or even the Jew, for all are in the same plight…Even if you have not done the same sins as others, you have still been deprived of God’s glory just as they have been, because you are among those who have offended… However, Paul was saying this not to cast them into despair but rather to show the love of the Lord toward man, as he goes on to say (in the following verses).” What is St. John Chrysostom saying? Sin is universal. That’s not unusual or important. That God loves us is important! 14 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION Psalm 27:1The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Because God loves us/me, what can harm me, really? Nothing! If nothing can harm me, then I am free to celebrate God’s love, living His love out in my/our life. 15 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION Isaiah 12:2 “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” Because God loves us, I can be brave. I can risk holy love. There is nothing to lose! 16 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION Ephesians 4:26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. Anger, Fear and Anxiety lead us into a selfpreservation mode, as if we were the only ones capable of defending us (idolatry). Can’t God defend us? If we prefer to trust ourselves to defend ourselves, then we have become our own idols. 17 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5: 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. The devil is real! Root meaning of the word “devil” is confusion. We become confused who our God really is, picking a false god in the process (idolatry). Cling to Jesus! In any and every temptation, every day, every hour cling to Jesus in prayer, study and work. 18 DISCUSSION & REFLECTION Oecumenius (6th century) “Justin Martyr (110-165) explains this by saying that before the coming of Christ the devil did not know what the weight of his punishment would be, but that when the Lord came and proclaimed that eternal fire was prepared for him and his angels he reacted by becoming even more determined to ensnare believers, in order to have as much company as possible in his rebellion.” The devil is still determined! He knows our names. Remember, Jesus won that battle already, and that victory becomes ours when we belong to Him. 19
