STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
TEXTBOOK: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS, 3RD
EDITION, BY Beer et al.
TEXTBOOK: MECHANICS OF COURSE CONTENT:
Concept of stress; stress on bolts and connection; Stress-strain
relationships; indeterminate structures; problems with temperature
changes; torsion of shaft; normal stress in members subjected to
pure moment, or eccentric loading; bending of composite members;
unsymmetric bending of beams; shearing stresses in beams;
transformation of stresses and strains;
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
•Familiarize the student with the principle of stresses and strains.
•Teach the students how to calculate stresses in axially loaded
members, bolts, connection, shafts, and beams.
•Acquaint students with stress-strain relationship under axial and
shear loadings.
•Provide students with necessary information to solve structurally
indeterminate problems based appropriate compatibility equations.
•Familiarize students with methods of calculating strains and/or
stresses resulting associated with temperature changes.
•Acquaint students with methods of calculating stresses and strains
due to torsion in shafts including examples involving indeterminate
shaft systems.
Teach the students ways of calculating normal stress in members
subjected to pure moments or eccentric loadings.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
•Show the students how normal stresses are calculated in
composite bars subjected to pure bending moment.
•Introduce students to unsymmetric bending of beams.
•Show students methods of calculating shear flow, and
shearing stresses in beams subjected to transverse
loading.
Familiarize students with the concept of principal stresses
and methods of their calculations including Mohr’s circle.
