1 Tuesday, 14 May 2013 Hello,My name is Paddy O’ Riordan and I am married in Kesh, Co. Fermanagh, Nothern Ireland. I am doing a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production This is my second and final year in Creative Media. I have chosen MUSIC VIDEO for my final major project. The banner above is one I used for my wordpress site. The LOGO’s I created in Photoshop for my show reel are at the top of this page. Starting with: I use a drum machine, but do all the rest myself, like the audio part of my music video I did for my FMP. I only use drum loops in my project for a tempo to play to. Everything else is real. I still like a real sound with real instruments and vocals. Some people lip-synced to a pre-recorded vocal rather than singing it themselves, to enhance a live performance. A vocalist might use bass lines, i.e. a drummer might add pre-recorded percussion. The solution is in-ear monitors one channel can be a metronome that feeds only the in-ear monitors, while the other channel contains the backing track. Microphone preamps go up to 60 dB of gain boost, if the input level is set too high, the preamp will be driven into clipping and causing distortion. If it is set too low you will get a hiss noise. The best thing to do to check the sound levels is to have the vocalist to sing, while I watch the solo meter level and bring up the gain level until the meter does not distortion on the headphones. I’ll bring up the gain, as I need to. 2 The red means it is clipping in the software audacity which I use all the time, it has good display meters. Gain Structures The recordings have to be loud to begin with. 3-6 dB is good level. I will monitor the input level of plugins to stop the overload on the signal. If so I just adjust by dragging the volume slider down. Keeping every channel from clipping and never clip the stereo output. Making sure no channels clips. Mono is used in radio talk shows, hearing aids, telephone and mobile communications and AM radio stations. It stands for: Monaural or monophonic sound. Audio signals are routed through a single channel and is easy to record. It requires only basic equipment and is less expensive for recording than stereo. Is more expensive for recording and you need knowledge and skill to record, the audio signals are routed through 2 or more channels. It is called: Stereophonic sound. It is in Movies, Television, Music players, and FM radio stations. Multi-tracks with Audacity I have used this program for all my audio recordings. It is a free application called Audacity. Just with a computer and a microphone I can record and edit multi-track audio for my FMP video. Plug a microphone into your 3 computer. Click the record button and begin singing. You should see the level indicators moving. When you’re done recording this first track then play it back. Save it as a new project. Then add a new track, then new audio Track. Click record, the original track will play while the first is playing. Plug your instrument into the computer with a 1/4″ connection; you can to 3.5mm adapter. Conclusion Then I panned equalized and added reverb to all track, as I liked, then I rendered and mixed to one track for final export. I exported as a wav file, because it has 320bpm or more if wanted. Mp3’s are 128bpm to 320bpm in Audacity, but wav can be 1700bpm if I want. My final format decision if Mp3 at 320bpm. Recording Studio Condenser microphones are the most common types of microphones for studios. They have greater frequency response of an instrument or voice. They have a louder output, but are much more sensitive to loud sounds. Open Air Dynamic microphones are ideal for general-purpose use. Rough handling. They are also better for handling high volume levels, from instruments or amplifiers. They have no internal amplifier and no batteries. Church The two main types of microphone; Condenser microphones and Cardioid Dynamic microphones. These respond differently to frequencies. You will need the microphones amplified, full audio quality. The lapel microphone is clipped to the shirt collar for the preacher. Micing up musical instruments in different recording situations Stadium or Indoor Arena This is also used in talent shows like X-Factor, because it is wireless and the singer has more freedom to move. 4 QTX 5 Colour Karaoke DYNAMIC Microphone Set for karaoke. Some are wireless Classroom & Conferencing Headset with Microphone Audio for gaming, chatting or chilling out to music. SteelSeries Flux GAMING Headset. Microphone frequency response 15 - 16000 Hz The Desktop computer Microphone This type of microphone is idea for Skype. It is better than using the built in microphone, because the internal microphone picks up the noise of the fan. The external mic is the best, like the one below. USB Mini Microphone Flexible Short Microphone For PC/Mac Microphones Microphones are used for real acoustic sound, and digital recording devices. I could plug-in my guitar with a cable direct, or I could not use a cable, but have the guitar about 8 inches away from the microphone. Getting a good recording is choosing the right microphone. Microphones need amplification, for analogue and digital production. Dynamic microphone Dynamic microphones are the most used. The pickup is connected to a coil/magnet, but in reverse. Vibrations caused by sound waves, and then makes an electrical signal. The dynamic microphone does not require a power source. They are not suited to sensitive studio work. They are ideal for a high volume. (i.e.), a bass drum mic, recording an electric guitar amplifier, or a stage vocal mic for use in loud environments. Advantages: Small, cheap to buy, hard to break, and moisture-resistant. Disadvantages: Some frequency responses are uneven. In other words, 5 what do you need the microphone for. The Shure SM58 dynamic microphone Condenser microphone BBC Radio makes the sound clear and natural with a good condenser microphone. Condensers are the best microphones for recording speech and acoustic instruments. They have a small capsule inside, one inch in diameter and a very thin pickup. It uses external current called phantom power, which I am learning about to improve my recording voice. It is an electrostatic magnet to provide an electrical charge between the two sides of the capsule, to make sound waves. Disadvantages: Moisture in the capsule of a condenser microphone can permanently damage it, and they are expensive. Advantages: Mono and stereo studio microphones with very high quality results, the frequency is has high sensitivity, which it good for singing and recording My voice. Neumann U87 condenser microphone This microphone is used for speech, choral, acoustic and classical recording. Advantages: Sensitivity and a large frequency range Disadvantages: Cost, power requirements, and sensitivity to moisture. Earthworks QTC1 omnidirectional Shotgun microphone A condenser capsule in a long tube, it is good for phase cancellation, highly directional beam 360 or all around the room, it will pick up everything. This microphone is the shotgun microphone. Camera-mounted microphones are the shotgun microphone. Advantages: Interviews, field recording, film & television, they are basically highly directional. Disadvantages: Unsuitable for many applications, I think it's the slotted tube mounting, untidy to use. USB microphone Used for podcasting, they connect directly to a computer USB port, and get any necessary power from this USB connection. They amplify and digitize the signal without the need for a pre-amplifier or soundcard. Which I think is great, but I never used one, it’s something to keep in mind all the same. Advantages: No soundcard necessary, powered by USB, easy to setup. 6 Disadvantages: I could not find any, I tried to find information, but none was there. The only thing was that I could use different sound cards, if I didn’t use USB microphones. Podcaster USB microphone Samson Go Mic USB microphone Ribbon microphone A metal ribbon is suspended in a magnetic field. The output signal from the side of the ribbon in a bipolar or figure of eight. Advantages: It has a natural sound. The figure of 8 bidirectional is useful in stereo recording techniques. Disadvantages: It can be damaged by high sound pressure levels and phantom power. Royer ribbon microphone Cardioid (heart-shaped) The pattern: single-diaphragm microphones directional Cardioid polar response pattern Omnidirectional A spherical pickup pattern, with no directional characteristics. Responds equally to sounds from any direction Omnidirectional polar response pattern Bi-directional (figure-of-eight) From either a ribbon microphone or a dual-diaphragm condenser. The sounds from the front or rear of the microphone are equal, with the sides. 7 The figure of 8 microphone is good in stereo recordings. Bidirectional polar response pattern Supercardioid / Hypercardioid Mixing different amounts of signals from opposite facing by a small rise in rear-facing sensitivity. Supercardioid polar response pattern Hypercardioid polar response pattern Shotgun Highly directional pattern with small lobes to the sides Shotgun microphone polar response pattern 8 Polar diagram Microphone seen from above, the polar diagram from each direction in the 360°. The greater the distance of the polar from the centre of the circle, is where the mic is positioned, the greater the sensitivity in that direction. Like a small drum skin, or eardrum when struck by air pressure waves caused by sound. This vibration is then translated into electrical signals, for amplification and recording. Male connectors are used for signal output and female connectors for signal input. Female (left) and Male (right) XLR connectors Jack plugs for connection, this is the microphone socket in computer soundcards. Dynamic Microphone Live sound and known for its durability. High volume levels of bass guitar, bass drums and amplifiers. This mic should not be placed any more than one foot away from the sound source. Some dynamic microphone are: Shure SM57; Sennheiser 421; Electro-Voice EV PL80; and Audio-Technica M4000. Condenser Microphone: (Battery) Recording lead vocal tracks, acoustic guitars, pianos, and strings, it has ability to capture the smaller parts of sound. Quick, response that cannot be done by other types of microphones. Not as rugged as a dynamic microphone. It's has a range of frequencies from a greater distance. 9 Popular condenser microphones include: Shure KSM27 and KSM32; Electro-Voice Bk-1; Sennheiser MKH40 and MKH80; and the Neumann KMS105. Ribbon Microphone: Most fragile microphone, qualities of sound from a ribbon microphone are very like the dynamic with the higher frequencies of the sound. Some peoples recordings of Guitar in the home are done with this technique. The same for the flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet. Instruments: strings, piano, violin, cello use internal pickups. It is plug in and play. Sometimes I’ve heard of people drilling a hole in the side of the stringed Instrument, to set in side the mic. Conclusion There is no right or wrong way to mic instruments. I think the most used techniques are the best, because they have been tried and tested. I think The Beatles experimented a lot with Stereo tracks, micing up in differently than anyone at the time. It is what sounds good to me at the time, but the main things like quality, expression, and creative playing will be the same. It the new way of doing things, the faster computers, the large storage on smaller devices. The format on which audio is stored has changed. All I use now is: Laptop, Microphone, Guitar and lead cable, and I can record endless tracks with all the effects I need. Its plug and play recordings. Everything will go wireless, Wi-Fi. Everything will be connected. The Internet of all things, connected to the Global brain, and recording music is no different. Genre of my song 10 I have chosen is a spiritual song I wrote myself when I was really broken and low in mood, depressed and lonely. The words came to me in about ten minutes at that time. I didn't think of the song much after this. The unit for Music Recording led me to resurrect this song. I needed to find a beat, chords, and harmonica structure. I've played certain songs that involvee the llistener because of the expression and emotion, with a meaningful life changing song, that really meant something to someone else and it surprised me, and made me want to continue, because of the help to someone it brings. I really believe a great song can change a life for the better. It has been proven in past years by many great artists like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and many more. Sound Quality factors I use are 44100Hz and 32-bit float. I use a WAV format because it is used on Windows and is needed for creating an audio CD. Then I compress the wave to mp3. A small size-compressed audio format, which is the main format for transmitting audio over the Internet, it has a great clear sound without losing its Quality factors. The best way for me to explain this is with picture diagrams. Below is one in Audacity. 11 Taking Sound & Video Settings Wave & HD Iinfluencing quality Acoustic reflection. The bouncing of sound waves back from an object or surface which is physically larger than the wavelength of the sound. Sound in a standard Room / Hall Sound waves travel at 345 meters/second, so that the sound coming back for the speaker within a large room will reach a listener after a time of about 0.2 seconds. This is the way I do it: So if I wanted to record myself with just a guitar that is not plugged in. I will have the guitar 5 inches away from the microphone. I will also another mic at the back of the room to pick up the acoustic reflection, to give the guitar a stronger full sound, and after that I could pan and make my guitar stereo, it will sound a bit like delay. Web site: http://www.yourdictionary.com/echo The distance Between microphones should be at least 3 times the distance from each microphone to its intended sound source. Absorption. A sound wave hits one of the surfaces of a room some of the sound is reflected back into the room, and some penetrates the surface. Parts of the 12 sound wave energy is absorbed to the heat energy in the material. Three basic sound absorbers: porous materials commonly formed of matted or spun fibers; panel (membrane) absorbers having an impervious surface mounted over airspace; and resonators created by holes or slots connected to an enclosed volume of trapped air. Noise Removal can reduce background sounds such as hum, or buzz, and takes out the amounts of "hiss". Audience, background noise, or crowd noise. It some cases it is wise to leave some in. i.e. (live recordings) Mp3 Converter in Audacity MP3 Export Audacity has options for encoding to the popular MP3 format. Ccompressed formats. The size of the file and the quality of the encoded file; higher quality requiring larger files. Wave to Mp3 is what I use. Which is 128kbps? Conclusion All audio file formats has its own strengths and weaknesses. The most popular sound file format these days is MP3 because of its high levels of audio quality, and its small file size. Microphone As below I would do if recording guitar. I’d connect the microphone to my computer mic input port. I use a mono microphone, but stereo will do also, as I will pan a mono track in production later, so it will not matter at this stage. I have mastered Audacity fairly well now, and it is easy, I get a great clear recording sound, so I will stick with it for now. The Recording Level The volume level should be adjusted to record at the highest level possible, without clipping the signal. Clipped signals will be distorted and can't be fixed. The highest peak of a recorded signal is about -6 dB away from clipping. -6 dB is equivalent to a height of 0.5 on Audacity's default waveform display 13 A mono mini-plug A stereo mini-plug Recording Multi-track Multi-task recording soon started to revolutionize the recording industry. The 4-track recorder was common in the 1960s. Bands like the Beatles, the Beach Boys' and producer Phil Spector took advantage of multiple tracks, experimenting with the new sounds. It didn't take long before for eight-track recorders to become the industry standard. 4 track tape, old 1955 model 8-track mixer A popular early (1973) Home multitask recorder. Eight-track Digital recorder 14 Today’s Computerized Model. Endless tracks! Depending on the computer memory installed on my computer. I’d use an external drive for large raw data. Analog technology a wave is recorded in an analog tape recorder signal is taken straight from the microphone and laid onto tape. The wave from the microphone is called the analog wave. That wave on the tape can be read, amplified and sent to a speaker to produce the recorded sound. Digital technology, the analog wave is sampled, and then turned into 1 & 0’s numbers, and are stored in the digital device. A CD sampling rate is 44,000 samples per second. To hear the music the numbers would have to be turned into a voltage wave Advantages of Digital Technology Numbers can be compressed for wav to mp3. I use wav to record with, and after mixing the tracks I compress them to mp3 so that they will fit on a CD. Waves are large sound files that take up too much memory space. I can get good quality sound on mp3. Reel-To-Reel Advantages Magnetic tape was used for about 50 years to record music. Digital audio has done its best to copy tape, with its sound qualities, with easy workflow. Some people use tape into digital systems for the best of both worlds. I prefer digital only, because of its easy recording software and storage. Analog Sound Part of the vinyl sound was low-level friction in the groove, as well as the effects of equalization needed for LPs to track properly. I don’t like tape hiss. Plug-ins have tried, nothing is the same quality to digital audio. I have listened to LP’s, tape, 45’s, but I prefer modern technology for its overall quality, storage and it’s easy to work with tracks when mixing. Tape High frequencies and a compression effects that are used to give rock 15 drums their distinctive sound. Studios often mix drums recorded digitally to magnetic tape at high levels, then load into digital format. Noise reduction; software recording and editing systems; After recording a vocal when using a low quality microphone. I end up background noise. I am using software called Audacity.com for the web site. The Noise Selected Select an area that has, just the background noise. Select Effect then Noise Removal. Click on the Get Noise Profile button. Removing the unwanted noise Select Effect and Noise Removal again. Adjust the slider. If I am happy with the result, I’ll click Remove Noise, and then export your file to wav or mp3. Listen to the sample with noise removed to see if you like it. Then the Adobe Flash Player is required to play this audio clip. Sound WAV to be edited Effects Processing The main impact on the sound is Equalization (called EQ). EQ you can emphasize or de-emphasize certain frequency bands which will make different tracks stand out from each other. Bass drum the frequencies above 6 kHz can be cut off and a boost at 80 Hz will create a more bass sound. I have done this by selecting the bass track, and in the options increase the bass, then I mixed all tracks and rendered, fixed the volume under clipping, then saved project. 16 I used the Compressor in the toolbox dropdown menu. It turns down the signal´s peaks, so they don’t cause distortion. Compression also reduces the difference between the loudest and softest parts of the track. It is a great tool in most software programs. I used the Reverb to add depth to the sound. I use it in vocal tracks. Like echo, but in echo the sound comes back to me. Guitars, strings and the piano are more natural with some reverb. Drums don’t need to be reverbed. This unit for me that for the first time is to find out what ways people have done it in the past. It will be an interesting journey for me, as I find this assignment worth looking into; also it's part of my course. The art of recording and making a video to suit it will be a mass challenge for me, as I don't know anything about how music and videos are made. And after this unit, I hope to know more, and to get the reality of the music/video industry. I will start with the research I have been doing for on and off about a year now. The best I have found is Audacity, because it, to my knowledge, it is as good as any paid software today. I have got good results, but have to work on effects and mixing more. It is user-friendly, and works on 32bit and 64bit windows of mac. It is "I believe" a great start, if the time is spent learning. It also comes up to the level of a proper recording studio, if used correctly and skilfully. I have mastered most, of its functions to date. There is millions of people worldwide using this software that is proof of its quality. This is their logo above, which I copy and pasted from their web site. This is my favourite audio recording software; I have been working on it for time to time for about one year now. Equipment needed • Digital camera or camcorder, which I can Borrow from South West College. • Computer. I have one, or can use from South West College • Microphone (built in or remote microphone) I have one, or can use from South West College Software needed Audacity 2.0.2 is the latest version of 2012. I've downloaded it from their web site. The Audacity 2.0.2 manual can also be downloaded it from their web site. What a great start so far! 17 Video software needed Cost Final Cut pro, which I used in S.W.C last year, and found it to be good enough for any professional type of film. Any video converter (software above) These are good settings, to change the large video files to compressed Mp4 Video. The only thing I have to do to compress it more if it is too large still after compression is to drop the Video and Audio bit rate, but not too much, because it will lose quality 18 Singer/ Songwriters Lighting & setting -up stage- recording video/audio engineer Restricting the length of time spent in noisy conditions, music noise levels during rehearsals and sound checks, backstage. 85 dB is high; noise level has to be below this level. Total: £150.00 Total Budget Left: £9,858 The brief will contain this information, because I need to know the basic time it will take, the cost and the crew help with the production, the song “My Heart is yours” will cost in the above total. The mixing, recording, mastering, and transfer are included in the total. This is not bad I will go with it. The Creative media industry uses it the most, because of songs that flop and sell really bad. In the past and today this is an on-going problem, so I have to watch the budget and the cost has to be planned carefully. The benefit of the content of the brief is to get a better idea of what and how much it will cost also, how much time. TIME: I will use the full four hours to record the song, listen to the playback, and see what changes I will make to the tempo, beat, vocals, melody lines, but the lyrics as fine, as this was done in 22 preparation. I tune the guitar, practiced singing it, when over the words. This all saved money and time, before I even got to the recording studio. Types/structure of briefs in what is good and what bad: It is bad to get the agreement signed, if I don’t give all information in the brief to begin with, in case of a court case about money or unfair treatment by the recording engineer. To make clear the direction and plan I am working on at this time. Tender: The contractors provide an estimated cost & description of how the creative media product may be produced. In this case in it is very simple, because I want to record my own song, so copyright is not going to be a problem. I will pay the cost of it, and give a copy of the brief the mixing, recording, mastering, and transfer crew. The terms and condition/under-lined stuff like, adult and violent content, more or less the hidden messages. In this case it will not apply as the lyrics are simple everyday usable words, and that have no law to say I can’t. It will not offend anyone. In their brief they have said that the workers get paid before the job is done, in case the brief goes over budget. Which I have allowed for any way. I hope my ideas evolve changes, as a result of my research, I will hopefully know more about Video and Audio Production. The end result should be a music video that I am happy with, and the sound should be in time, and cutting to the beat, with the video shots and angles will match the music. Three basic sound absorbers: porous materials commonly formed of matted or spun fibers; panel (membrane) absorbers having an impervious surface mounted over airspace; and resonators created by holes or slots connected to an enclosed volume of trapped air. Noise Removal Noise Removal can reduce background sounds such as hum, or buzz, and takes out the amounts of "hiss". 27 The Recording Level The volume level should be adjusted to record at the highest level possible, without clipping the signal. Clipped signals will be distorted and can't be fixed. The highest peak of a recorded signal is about -6 dB away from clipping. -6 dB is equivalent to a height of 0.5 on Audacity's default waveform display A mono mini-plug A stereo mini-plug Recording Multi-track Multi-task recording soon started to revolutionize the recording industry. The 4-track recorder was common in the 1960s. Bands like the Beatles, the Beach Boys' and producer Phil Spector took advantage of multiple tracks, experimenting with the new sounds. It didn't take long before for eight-track recorders to become the industry standard. 28 4 track tape, old 1955 model 8-track mixer A popular early (1973) Home multitask recorder. Eight-track Digital recorder Today’s Computerized Model. Endless tracks! Depending on the computer memory installed on my computer. I’d use an external drive for large raw data. Analogue / digital recording systems Analog technology a wave is recorded in an analog tape recorder signal is taken straight from the microphone and laid onto tape. The wave from the microphone is called the analog wave. That wave on the tape can be read, 29 amplified and sent to a speaker to produce the recorded sound. Digital technology, the analog wave is sampled, and then turned into 1 & 0’s numbers, and are stored in the digital device. A CD sampling rate is 44,000 samples per second. To hear the music the numbers would have to be turned into a voltage wave Numbers can be compressed for wav to mp3. Tape High frequencies and a compression effects that are used to give rock drums their distinctive sound. Studios often mix drums recorded digitally to magnetic tape at high levels, then load into digital format. Noise reduction; software recording and editing systems; After recording a vocal when using a low quality microphone, I end up background noise. I am using software called Audacity.com for the web site. The Noise Selected Select an area that has, just the background noise. Select Effect then Noise Removal. Click on the Get Noise Profile button. Removing the unwanted noise Select Effect and Noise Removal again. Adjust the slider. If I am happy with the result, I’ll click Remove Noise, and then export your file to wav or mp3. 30 Listen to the sample with noise removed to see if you like it. Then the Adobe Flash Player is required to play this audio clip. Sound WAV to be edited Current hardware and computer interfaces; Effects and processors; mastering considerations Effects Processing The main impact on the sound is Equalization (called EQ). I used the Compressor in the toolbox dropdown menu. 31 It is user-friendly, and works on 32bit and 64bit windows of mac. It is "I believe" a great start, if the time is spent learning. It also comes up to the level of a proper recording studio, if used correctly and skilfully. I have mastered most, of its functions to date. There is millions of people worldwide using this software that is proof of its quality This is their logo above, which I copy and pasted from their web site. This is my favourite audio recording software; I have been working on it for time to time for about one year now. Video software needed Cost Final Cut pro, which I used in S.W.C last year, and found it to be good enough for any professional type of film. Any video converter (software above) These are good settings, to change the large video files to compressed Mp4 Video. The only thing I have to do to compress it more if it is too large still after compression is to drop the Video and Audio bit rate, but not too much, because it will lose quality 32 Planning for 1 and 2. Thank for your employment through the year, I’ll leave you with a small portfolio of Logos ,colours, text, fonts, showcase my music video, audio, photos, in all of the work I have done for the company over the year. The property rights are the copyright, patents, trademarks, and design rights. It is a moral and paternal right to the artists. Some may have their trademarks, but in this case I don’t have one. Aim My aim is to research recording Music Video in the Creative Media Industry, last year I talked about artists and compared company's and record sales. This time looking at the recording Industry today, in a quick changing world for the artist/company and videos, and how it works now. YouTube Conclusion I am looking at the facts, which are amazing. On YouTube 60 hours of video uploaded every minute More than 4 Billion views per day 1 Hour of YouTube uploads per second The first step normally is to record something of myself, to show it to someone else, in other words, it will be my music video CV. Just like a person looking for work gives a CV to an employer. There really is no big difference, to getting that job, than believing in my music. If i don't get the 35 job? Well i can say i tried, it will make no difference, because the love of music and what i do is more important to me. This unit for me that for the first time is to find out what ways people have done it in the past. It will be an interesting journey for me, as i find this assignment worth looking into; also it's part of my course. The art of recording and making a video to suit it will be a mass challenge for me, as i don't know anything or little, about how music and video are made. And after this unit, i hope to know more, and to get the reality of the music/video industry. I will start with the research i have been doing for on and off about a year now. The best i have found is Audacity, because it to my knowledge, it is as good as any paid software today. I have got good results, but have to work on effects and mixing more. It also comes up to the level of a proper recording studio, if used correctly and skilfully. I have mastered most, of its functions to date. There is millions of people worldwide using this software that is proof of its quality. That is great, but i will leave it for the Music Recording Unit 48. Now i just want to say i have recorded my Music Video, and where do i go from here. 2nd Conclusion in my own words - on a personal level If i wanted to be serious about this. I would find want to do next after my Music Video is complete. 36 The Audacity 2.0.2 manual can also be downloaded it from their web site. What a great start so far! Video software needed Cost Final Cut pro which i used in S.W.C last year, and found it to be good enough for any professional type of film. I have to do a storyboard, production log, planner and this diary. Went to Muffin’s house, learned to mic up drums, we put down the drums first Wed 5th December I seen guitarist added tracks using a line in cables directly into a computer, using recording software Garage Band. Making loops, as it the most used now. Writing the lyrics and melodies. Adding singers voices Mixing, rendering, and adding a little echo on the vocals I am doing my own song so this is how I did it. The first thing I have to do is to open my favourite recording software which is Audacity. I’ll plug the condenser microphone in to the direct current (D.I) and then into my laptop. By clicking I opened up the Audacity software. The open screen will look like something like the print below, which has my tracks imported into it. I can set the volume levels by selecting a single track and then going into effects on the tool bar I can increase the volume or decrease it. The main tool I will use for this recording is the effects tool bar because it will allow most of the setting I need to produce a high quality wav format file recording. Wav has up to 1000bits per second, but I will use 320bps, because I believe it’s good for memory compression with my Music Video. Adjusting tracks Since I only going to be using 5 tracks. By adjusting the height of this track to make it easier to edit. Hover the cursor over the bottom edge of the track until it changes to two arrows, and then adjust the tracks height by dragging vertically. I find this easier to do for my FMP than to explain it. 37 Below is the finished imported audio screen: The tracks listed and named to make the recording easyier. Tool bar Here a screen shot from the left side of the screen Drums track Violet singing Guitar Paddy singing Organ Rendered Look on the above screen shot to see these track names. After finished importing all my audio files. In the dropdown tool bar, I first select all the tracks, changed and paned tracks to left or right, to make it a stereo final mix, and then mixed and rendered. I was left with one final track, which is the master track. 44100 Hz as your default sample rate and 16-bit format for CD and broadcast quality. Click OK to close the dialog box. audacity.sourceforge.net/ has a help tool so it was easy to do. I could explain every tool in the project, but it would be better to say to someone, just go to the help in audacity.sourceforge.net/ I imported the drum track first, there was no need to add echo on the drums. I just had to stop it from clipping by selecting it, and lowing the volume. It is the same method, by checking all the volume on all of the tracks from the distortion of clipping. I add Violet voice next with me playing the guitar easy, it’s just to give her an idea of where she it with the song. It will only pick up her voice. The real plugin guitar will be added later. 38 Listening to play back on the headphones, I added the plugin guitar with lead plugged into my laptop. I selected guitar track and added chorus effect, and a little echo 0.2 (in effects tab) Then I added myself singing, with listening to play back on the headphones and the microphone plugged in, as always I should have said at the beginning. I added just echo. I added mouth organ and added a lot of echo 0.4, is good for a blues sound, to do so. I mixed and rendered by selecting all the tracks, and on the tool menu selected mixed and rendered. The last thing was to check the clipping, and to pan each track from to left and right, depending on taste. I like to use Stereo as much as I can, by panning all the tracks, except the drums. Drums are used mostly in the centre, and not panned at all. Last but not less important, export to wav format for better studio quality. It can be later compressed to mp3 for compact disk. Drums track, Violet singing, Guitar, Paddy singing, Organ, Rendered Clipping: to avoid clipping see that you don’t go into the red on the volume level, it can be fixed later, but it is better to set the levels at the beginning. I could explain every tool in the project, but it would be better to say to someone, just go to the help in audacity.sourceforge.net/ What I will need Male connectors are used for signal output and female connectors for signal input. 39 Female (left) and Male (right) XLR connectors Jack plugs for connection, this is the microphone socket in computer soundcards. Dynamic Microphone Live sound and known for its durability. High volume levels of bass guitar, bass drums and amplifiers. This mic should not be placed any more than one foot away from the sound source. Condenser Microphone: (Battery) Recording lead vocal tracks, acoustic guitars, pianos, and strings, it has ability to capture the smaller parts of sound. Quick, response that cannot be done by other types of microphones. I have to do a storyboard, production log, planner and this diary. I am picking stuff over the year for my PORTFOLLIO. I will post it on WORDPRESS. I have set up a wordpress site and I am working on posts and pages. I wanted to change the home page and take out the photo at the start of the home page. Working on wordpress, learning to navigate pages, and add new posts 40 41 I uploaded my CV from a memory stick. I am now trying to move and resize text and picture to make them presentable. This page provides a video show casing my music recording skills and video editing. I recorded the music first in windows sound editing software called Audacity. I then sang along with the finished track, with the video camera running. This was done after a lot of takes. The take I was happy with. I then edited the video to the music, and cutting to the beat. It is my first serious video. I hope you like it. Designing and planning pages using my favourite fonts, styles, colours and overall layout, with storyboard. I will use dark red, dark green and mostly pale colours to set the mood. It’s a music video that starts sad, with a happy ending. 42 STORYBOARD MUSIC VIDEO 1080 X 720 res. Rendered and I saved it to the desktop and named it “my heart is yours”. Working on wordpress I am designing a website in wordpress, I want to import, mostly my audio and video editing techniques. I want to add pages of my work in the last two years. By showing my songs and my audio and video editing techniques, it will be useful for my digital portfolio. A banner will be essential, from the Photoshop editing program, saved as a jpeg and imported or added into Word press. The text font style is also taken from Photoshop, because it is not listed in Microsoft Word. Creative Media it is all different colours, styles and my own creation. It is a type of brush in Photoshop. A drop down menu at the top right of the screen will include: College Work, Portfolio, CV, and FMP Video. Repetition Styles and visuals are repeated across a page which it good apart from the consistent use of colour throughout, too much of the same. Alignment Equal distances rule is ok, but there is a little too much spacing on the right of the photo. Proximity The people are too big or too close to each other. It is like a random snap shot I would take for fun with my friend, but maybe the photographer wanted this effect I don’t know. 44 These are the pages I added in Dashboard. 45 46 Health and Safety Sound: noise and vibration The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSW Act) and the Noise at Work Regulations 2005 High sound levels are risk to hearing, people working at an event and for the audience. High levels of vibration can have serious consequences in hearing. I most have proper control over levels of sound. It can damage hearing if people are exposed to it long enough, the sound energy a person is exposed to. Restricting the length of time spent in noisy conditions, music noise levels during rehearsals and sound checks, backstage. 85 dB is high; noise level has to be below this level. Strobe lights may induce epilepsy in sensitive individuals. Warning is to be given at the entrance or in the programme. Facilities for people with special needs with suitable arrangements to ensure that all people with special needs are able to attend. (Including wheelchair users). Music Video I created a logo in Photoshop called it Kesh Creation with a K. I first double clicked on the Premiere pro icon, and went to file – import. Then I selected this file, as you see below. It inserted into the video and audio timeline you see in blue. I also inserted my logo I created at the start. I opened my favourite recording software which is Audacity. I imported the audio wav file into Premiere pro, it landed on the audio time-line. This will track I mimed to earlier. 47 After recording the audio track I turned on the video recorder, and set the camera to pal 1080px720p. I placed the camera on a stand, and then I set up the scène with my guitar. I pressed record on the video camera, and then I sat down in front of the camera and played the audio track. I set the audio to repeat the song to get a few takes. I mimed to the audio, later cut out what video I didn’t want with the razor blade on the Premiere pro toolbar. The tool bar at the top on the screen After the video was recorded, I got a few more close-up of the guitar and previous video clips of Violet to make nice fill-in effects later. I needed extra video tracks to make the video presentation and more watchable for the viewer, which first of all was me. I needed it to be cut to the beat, were the video and audio will be in sync with each other. This unit is about video mostly, as I have talked about audio in the music recording unit, even so the audio is as important as the video. Music videos in the 80s had the video to the forefront, as the reason way people did buy the 45 singles at the time. 48 Above is the 2 screen in Premiere pro, the left screen allows me to view all my clips, video & audio. The right is where I want the finished music video to look and sound. As you can see on the above right screen, it has an effect added to it. I like to add effects, but some videos will not need them. I am going to use effects on this song, because it is a music video, and most music videos have effects added to them. It may be different if I was doing a documentary, as not many effects are added, sometimes none. Effects are important to me in my music video. Clips I added to a Timeline panel have effects pre-applied built in. I adjusted some of the effects in the Effect Controls Panel. Some effects include animate, rotate, and scale your clips, or composite them with other clips. Reduce the opacity of a clip for use in such effects as overlays, fades, and dissolves. Time Remapping lets me slow down, speed up, or reverse playback. Below is the adjustment layer Photo taking from: http://magazine.creativecow.net/article/nab-2012-adobe-cs6-release 49 This panel at the left of the screen is just a few pre-set effects and transitions. I will use about 5 to10 different effects for my music video. I will use a spin effect, zoom, colour and Stylize effect, to just name a few. By clicking and selecting the effect I want, and then dragging it into the time-line, I can play about with all the effect to get the one I want. This toolbar has a razor tool. I would be impossible for me to do this video without this tool, as I cut audio and video in the timeline. Razor Tool is for cutting film for editing 50 51 These are some of the default settings in effects in Premiere pro. 52 53 54 55 Paddy O’ Riordan Charis, 49 Main St, Kesh, Enniskillen, Co.
