Day 1
SILENTLY, get your materials out.
 SILENTLY, put your bags underneath the
table/chair.
 SILENTLY, answer these on the index cards.
1. Name, address, phone#
2. Spanish-speaking only parents/guardians?
3. Your schedule , teachers ( +advisory)
4. Afterschool activities?
5. Other concerns? Can’t see well? allergies?


When I am talking, listen.
Beginning of class, direct instruction, giving instructions, end-of-class, answering questions

Do your best. You are responsible for your
learning. STUDY.

Keep it clean.
A qualified AP Biology student is one that:
• is highly motivated
• is academically oriented
• has excellent study skills and reading
abilities
• views learning as a journey rather than an
obligation
• is responsible for their OWN learning
WHAT TO EXPECT:
•AP BIOLOGY is equivalent to a college
Introductory Biology course for majors
(2 semester course with labs)
•There will be HOMEWORK!
•This is NOT a class where cramming the
night before a test will work!
You must do the READING & HOMEWORK
& KEEP UP!

Due to the rigor and expectations of an
AP course, grades are weighted.
A “B” in an AP course carries the same
weight as an “A” in a regular class when
calculating GPA averages.
Find out if they accept AP scores for
credit (most, but not all colleges do).
On the website
http://local.brookings.k12.sd.us/krscience/open/info.htm
there is a link to the College Board
that allows students to search for AP
credit policies at different universities

You know each other. If you don’t, briefly
introduce yourselves.

You are conversing ( level 2) in order to
accomplish the task. You are ON-TASK.

If you have questions, silently raise your hand
and I will go to you. Ask permission first if you
want to ask some other group.

Turn to your partner, if you don’t know each
other, briefly introduce yourselves. If you do,
briefly ask each other how your summer
vacations were.

Discuss the qualities of a successful AP Bio
student. Do you think you have what it takes?
Why? Are there qualities that you can work
on? How?
Section I ( 90 minutes)
63 multiple choice questions
6 math related questions
Simple calculator with square root function is
allowed.

Section II ( 90 minutes)
10 minute reading/prep period
80 minutes writing
2 essays and 6 shorter ones

MY EXPECTATIONS


You are quietly doing your
work.Don’t bother others
during that time.
If you have questions,
silently raise your hand,
wait patiently.
Voice level 0: Silent,
Voice level 1: Whisper

WHEN?




DO NOW * no questions
Individual work
Independent reading
Independent tests

Annotate-> personal notes on what is
important to you about the text.

Come up with 3 questions. Write those
questions on your index card.
BIG IDEA 1.
The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
BIG IDEA 2.
Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks
to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis.
BIG IDEA 3.
Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information
essential to life processes.
BIG IDEA 4.
Biological systems interact, and these systems and their
interactions possess complex properties
The student can:
1. use representations and models to communicate scientific
phenomena and solve scientific
2. use mathematics appropriately
3. engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide
investigations within the context of the AP course
4. plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to a
particular scientific question
5. perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence
6. work with scientific explanations and theories
7. connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts,
and representations in and across domains

Accessing the text: visual, text-based
Video, prezi, powerpoint
 First reading: scan, note main ideas, text breaks,
vocabulary, compare to notes
 Second reading: Deep dive-> Section by section (
notes/ graphic organizers/questions)
 Debriefing your own reading-> go back to your prereading notes, merge
 Third reading: Reading for mastery-> Test yourself (
Create your own test/answer it)
 Create your study aids: vocab cards-> what is your
strategy? How will you review for it next year?






Look at my annotations of p. 452.
Read my notes
Highlight/annotate the text where each
section of my notes can be found.
Annotate pp. 453-454 ( before Lamarck).
Create your notes.

Create a scientific poster using 2 folders
showing the results of your summer inquiry.

Refer to the rubric and the exemplar as
guides.

Behavior Expectation: You are working on
your poster. You can ask questions and talk to
others about the task. Level 2 Voice.

Use the time to read/take notes on/create
your study guids/vocabulary index cards.

There are many things you need to read and
remember. Please use any free time in class
to STUDY.
Aug.7 (W): Quiz on Video 1
Turn in Video Guide

Aug.9 (F): Parent response forms ( LAB!)
