People in South Asia have experienced a population
explosion in the past few years. Since there are a
limited number of resources on the planet, people
compete for these resources. Governments in South
Asia are working to improve the lives of their citizens
with the limited resources available in their country
through a process called economic development.
How can countries work to improve the lives of their
citizens? How will improving the economy of a
country improve their standard of living? Are nations
in South Asia in need of economic development?
Why?

According to the World Food Programme, in
India, 20-34% of the population is undernourished, meaning they eat less than 2,100
calories per day. How many calories do you eat
for lunch daily? Find out by checking the calorie
count in your lunch.
In 2000, 189 nations made a pledge to free
people from extreme poverty. This pledge
became the eight Millennium Development
Goals to be achieved by 2015.
After reviewing the goals, write the goal you
think is the most important for India to solve
first in order to improve the standard of living
and why on the padlet.

 Explain TWO actions the Indian government could do in order to achieve
this goal, in addition the actions the government is already doing.
 Explain how improving one goal may or may not impact the other UN

 Explain how the standard of living will increase for the people of India.
Create a presentation to explain your plan to the United Nations, using a
format such as PowerPoint, Animoto, Voki, Glogster, or any other format
approved by your teacher. Remember, your plan must include your
