Math







Fundamentals of Math/ Introductory Math (yearlong math for students who scored Level 1
and need a full year of math before taking Math I)
Introductory Math (spring semester, students who scored low level II and need some
reinforcement before going into Math I)
Foundations of Math I/Math I(standard math for most students who took math 8)
Special Topics in Math/Math II Honors - elective course for students who received high C or
B in CCM I and they need a reinforcement semester before going on to Honors Math II.
This course is for students who would like to continue on the honors track.
Foundations of CCMII – elective course for students who scored a D in CCMI and need a
semester of reinforcement before continuing on to Math II.
Math II – students who scored a C or high D in CCMI. If students are successful they may
still be recommended for Math III honors.
Math II Honors--for students who received an A or high B in CCMI.
English
 English I
 English I (Honors)

Integrated Reading/English I (hand-selected based on EOG scores)
Science
 Earth Science
 Earth Science (Honors)
 Biology (Honors)-Not recommended by the Science department, and is only an option for students
enrolled in Honors CCM II
Microsoft IT Academy
 Freshmen have the opportunity to take English paired with Microsoft Word & PowerPoint in the Fall,
and then Earth Science, and Microsoft Excel & Access in the Spring.
 At the end of the year, students who successfully complete the certification exams will receive Microsoft
Office Specialist certification.
 Students can sign up for the standard or honors level for each of the classes
 Students must sign up for ALL 4 classes to be in the academy. (therefore, students who wish to be in
Biology, or don’t want to take both Microsoft classes cannot be part of the academy)

o The Naval Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) is a well established military training
program that stresses personal responsibility, respect for others, leadership and teamwork in addition to
community and school service. It has clearly defined uniform and grooming standards and students
who are unsure that they will be able to consistently abide by such standards should not join the

program. Cadets wear the U.S. Navy uniform to school every Thursday and they are always
subject to a uniform inspection. Cadets wear the uniform with attention to detail and pride and they
maintain grooming standards at all times.
The Spring Leadership, Drill & Ceremony course is an optional elective that JROTC students can take.
JROTC Camp will be held for a week in mid-August. More info can be found on the JROTC page of
the Cary High website closer to the end of the school year.

World Languages
 Recommended that students wait until 10th grade to begin World Languages
 If students have taken the high school credit course for Level I then they may register for Level II of a
World Language for the fall semester of the 9th grade year
 There is a very limited number of seats available for rising 9th grade students who have a strong
interest in World Languages as a concentration area
Fine Arts Elective Information

We offer Beginning and Advanced orchestra classes at Cary High School. During these
classes the students will be able to play Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass and both classes are
offered for 9 -12 grade students.
Beginning orchestra (or Orchestra I) is a semester class and it is designed for students who
are interested in starting an instrument for the first time. The primary focus for this class is
on basic instrumental skill development and music reading. The goal for this class is to
develop playing technique and music reading ability so the students can enter into
Advanced Orchestra (Or Orchestra II).
Advanced Orchestra (Orchestra II) is a string ensemble with high level of music and an
average of one performance per month. In this class emphasis is placed on the
advancement of instrumental technique, further development of music reading and
comprehension skills, independent musicianship, style and a deeper understanding of small
group ensemble music, and orchestra literature. Music literature contains all types and
genre of music.
Band Information
o Fall Marching Band is the summer commitment with band camp. Band Camp is Aug 4o
o
15th, 2014.
Unlike Fall Marching Band, Spring Concert Band doesn't have a lot of after-school
commitment--several concerts but that’s about it.

Open House Information
 CHS Curriculum Fair: Thursday, February 20th from 6-8pm. Students and parents are encouraged to
attend and learn about course descriptions, meet our staff, and hear about rigor and pace of Honors
classes at Cary. The rising 9th grade session begins at 6pm in the Auditorium.
 Band Information Night for Middle School Parents will be held on February 25th at 7pm in the CHS
Band Room. Please check the Band webpage on the Cary High website for more information.
 Sports physical night will be held one evening in May in our gym. There is a nominal cost, usually $20.
Please remember that Fall Sports try-outs and practices begin in early August. Please visit the
Athletics page of the Cary High website for more information, and coaches’ emails.
 Freshman Camp day will be held on August 6th. It is a half-day event for both parents and students.
