Reading the poem “I’m Not Afraid by Alex Ab, I thought that this poem was going to be about
the speaker not being afraid to achieve a goal or to stand up to something he/she isn’t afraid of. The
deeper the poem is articulated through is a series of comparisons starting with personification. “You’re
the symphony of my notes; you’re the tendress of my words.” The speaker is describing their love by
talking about how much they love them and what they remind the speaker of or in this case describing
the person. Another device used in the poem is a simile. “I look at you like a free dove.” I believe that
the speaker is also describing their lover and by comparing their love like a free dove, I think of their love
to be open and that if he/she is free like a dove. The speakers tone is shown through the poem “I’m Not
Afraid” is that the speaker starts off as having a tone that is like he/she is searching for love then
towards the end of the poem the tone of the speaker changed to a loving tone, for example.. “I look at
you like a free dove, you made me realize I’m not afraid of love.” The poem shifts after the last two lines
from describing what the speaker feels to describing their love and how the speaker feels. When I first
read the title of the poem I thought that it would kind of be like a tuff guy act or overcoming a fear but
then I realized after reading it is that the speaker was ‘afraid’ of love, but than by the end of the poem
their love made them to be not afraid of love. The theme of the poem is true love, like how the speaker
have discussed though out the poem.
