What are Missionaries:
Exact definition:
A person sent by a church, into an area to carry
on evangelism or other activities as educational
work.
My definition:
A person or persons who go to a foreign
country to spread a certain religion.
Relation to Book:
I read the book The Poisonwood Bible
By: Barbara Kingsolver. It’s about a family who go to
Congo in 1959 as missionaries. The book is told by the
wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce
Baptist preacher from Georgia. The family has to over
come many rough obstacles including having the very
first elected Prime Minister of Congo murdered, and
having themselves caught in poverty while in this
unknown country when the US wouldn’t pay them
anymore for their hard work.
DANGER!!!
Being a missionary can some times be an extremely
dangerous job. In some countries, if they find out that
you’re a missionary, they will kill you are put in in prison.
Some of these countries are China and North Korea. What’s
the same about both these countries? Yes, they are both
communist. Communist is when the government runs
everything. You don’t have the right of speech sometimes
and lot’s of other things.
End of the Spear: A True Story
End of the Spear is a true story about Mincayani, a Waodoni
tribesman from the jungles of Ecuador in South America.
The ways of the Waodoni are very wrong. When other
tribes attack a village, then the village they attack must
get revenge! They resort to cannibalism and spearing all
enemies. When five young missionaries come and are
speared to death by the Waodoni tribe, the families of these
men must come to trust the tribe when illness strikes.
The Waodoni tribe change their ways and become
just like family with the missionaries families.
Everyone forgives the Waodoni people for what
they had done. This story is now a motion
picture. (Pictures are from the movie)
Smuggling Bibles:
You may ask “What’s Smuggling Bibles?”. Smuggling bibles is
probably the most dangerous thing that a missionary can do! For
example: China. In China, bibles are not allowed. If you are found with
one, they will send you to prison or kill you. (Please Note: Killing is
something they do as an extraordinary measure. It is not a common
thing.) Your question might be, “How do they get bibles through the
airports?” The missionaries have to where these suits that have places
to put 20-50 bibles.
Then you have to cover up. They put on layers and
layers of sweaters and jackets and pants. So honestly,
you will look really fat. It’s dangerous, but when you

it all worth it.
Real Life Smuggler:
I went to camp this summer and I had a speaker named Molly Sanborn.
She brings joy to world, one cheese ball at a time. (Ask me about it later.)
Molly told us a lot of stories this summer, but I remember her telling us about
her smuggling bibles in China. She brought a picture of the family, but she
had to blur out their faces just in case the picture got out onto the internet.
That showed me how much people go through to get bibles. For more
