Health Room
Are you experiencing eye
problems? It could possibly be
from using your cell phone. People
have a tendency to hold cell phones
close to their face while using these
devices compared to reading books
and magazines. This shorter
reading distance is harder on the
eyes. Have you experienced tired
or dry eyes, discomfort, blurry
vision, or headaches recently? If
your answer is yes please share
these concerns with your eye
doctor. Perhaps you need
prescription glasses or maybe the
doctor will suggest lubricating eye
drops (such as Systane) if your eyes
are dry.
One helpful rule you can follow
recommended by the American
Academy of Ophthalmology is to
take breaks from staring at your
phone, ipad, or computer. Every 20
minutes, stare at something at least
20 feet away, for 20 seconds.
This month the Queen Anne’s
County Health Department will be
screening vision and hearing on all
PK, new K, 1st grade and referrals.
Students who do not pass the first
screen will be screened again in
December. Students will be
referred to their doctor if they do
not pass the second screen. At this
time a letter will be sent home for
you to share with your doctor.
Please remember to return the
bottom half of this letter after you
visit your doctor so we can update
your child’s health record at school.
Finally, Flu Mist will be
administered here at school on
Friday November 15 to students
who need the second dose and to
those students who had permission
and were absent first time. If you
have any questions let us know.

American Education Week and Grandparents' Day
By: Michele Hampton
SES will be celebrating American Education Week and
Grandparents' Day the week of November 18th. A
suggested day for parents and grandparents to visit school
is listed below. This schedule will provide you an
opportunity to visit all of your children the same day if you
desire to do so. This will also limit the amount of visitors we
will have in the building on any one of the days. We are
making every effort to make sure visitation day is a normal
day as possible and ask that you cooperate in this effort by
leaving small children at home with a babysitter. We love
seeing the grandparents as well.
We look forward to seeing you during American Education
Week!

On October 10, 2013, the United Needs and
Abilities Organization from Salisbury, MD
sponsored a puppet show on the topic,
epilepsy. The purpose for the assembly is to
increase public awareness regarding epilepsy.
The month of November is Epilepsy
Awareness Month. Third grade students had
the opportunity to learn about epilepsy and
interact with the puppets as they learned.
The puppets depicted two friends and what
happened when one of them had a seizure.
Emergency Preparedness for Sudlersville
Elementary School
On September 19th, the students and staff
practiced a precautionary lockdown drill, as
well as, an alternate route fire drill. Queen
Anne's County Deputy Terry Copper
attended and assisted during these two
procedures. According to Mrs. Hampton,
"Students and staff participate in these
drills as a means to ensure that all
occupants may rapidly evacuate to a place
of safety in the event of an
emergency." Deputy Copper was
complimentary about student and staff
practices during this routine drill.

Pre-K News
It has been an exciting two
months in Pre-K. Thanks to
all the parents and family
members who went with us
to Pizza Hut. The children
learned a lot and had a
wonderful time. In addition,
thanks to everyone for their
help with our Nursery
Rhyme Day. It was a big
success. The kids looked
great in their costumes and
they did a wonderful job
reciting their nursery
rhymes. Our next unit will
be "My Five Senses.”
Encourage your child to
describe what they see,
smell, hear, feel, and taste.
It was a pleasure meeting
everyone at parent
conferences. If you have any
other questions always feel
free to call. We will be
having our Thanksgiving
Feast on Tuesday, November

Kindergarten News
Thank you to all parents who came to
talk with us during parent conferences.
It was great to be able to share ideas
about meeting the needs of your child.
The second marking period reading
logs were distributed at parent
conferences. Please remember that
reading at home is extremely
important to help your child develop a
love of reading. The reading log form
is a basic guideline. You are welcome
to electronically submit the record of
reading via email to your child's
teacher. When you read with your
child, ask him/her to find high
frequency words that we have been
working on in class. These words are
on the inside of your child's folder. Also
remember to take turns asking
questions when you are reading with
your child. The children are excited
about learning to read! Your
encouragement and praise, on their
efforts, will help them become
successful readers!
Thank you, The Kindergarten Team

Grade 3 News
“Fabulous Fall”
Welcome to the third month of
school! Thank you for attending
your child’s parent conference at
the end of last month. November is
going to be a busy month. Just a
reminder that we will have a half
day on Wednesday, November 13th,
2013. November 18th begins
“American Education Week 2013!”
This year parents will come in based
on the letter of their last name.
There are two days devoted to
grandparents, which will be
Thursday, November 21st, 2013 as
well as Friday, November 22nd,
2013. We look forward to seeing all
parents and grandparents! Please
make sure to turn in a lunch slip if
you or a grandparent plan on eating
lunch with your child. Please mark
your calendars- the third grade will
be taking a field trip to the Md.
Science Center in Baltimore on
Friday, December 20th, 2013. The
permission slips were handed out
at the parent conferences. This is
going to be an awesome trip!
We just began Topic 4
~”multiplication” in Math!
Multiplication flash cards can be
found in many dollar stores for
purchase. Children are expected to
have these multiplication facts
mastered by fourth grade so any
practice that can be completed at
home would be appreciated.
Grade 4 News
In Science, each student will be
going to another classroom to
be taught a different unit of
study. Mrs. Bildstein will be
teaching chemistry, Mrs.
Leventhal~ earth science and
Mrs. Thren~ Life Science.
Please make sure that your
child continues to read and
complete the “opinion”
paragraph writing in the
Reading Homework notebook.
Opinion writing is a large focus
of instruction this year as it is a
large component of the “Core
Curriculum!” In closing from
our family to yours we wish
you a “Happy Thanksgiving.”
Factors, factors everywhere! We
are busy working on
multiplication. It is so important
that our students know their
multiplication facts from 112. Have fun helping your child
practice his/her facts daily: use
flash cards, dice games, and
multiplication trivia in the car.
Awesome writing in the works.
Students are working on
improving their writing skills.
Continue helping your child work
on proper sentence structure
within their reading
comprehension homework.
Let's get moving!
The third grade students
researched famous
Hispanic Americans and
then spent some time
writing biographies about
an influential Hispanic of
their choosing. Then, they
constructed figures of
their person using a
variety of materials. This
was a three week project
that helped each student
learn and gain more
respect for a different
culture.
Students will
be moving classrooms for
Science. Starting November 5th
students will be moving to
another classroom for Science
instruction. Students in Mrs.
Rosendale's class will be taught
Physical Science by Mrs.
Settelmaier, students in Mrs.
Settelmaier's room will be taught
Life Science by Mrs. Embert, and
students in Mrs. Embert's room
will be taught Earth Science by
Mrs. Rosendale.

Math Matters
Common Core Math Update
Queen Anne’s County Public Schools are using the Maryland Common Core State Standards for their
math instruction. With these standards, students are expected to master math skills at each grade
level, expand their strategies for working with number based problems and be able to explain their
mathematical thinking. Students will learn MORE about less topics. As a parent, it is important that
you know what skills are MOST important for your child at each grade.

Counting sets and understanding numbers to 20
Counting and comparing numbers and sets, begin adding and subtracting
Add and subtract within 20, begin place value
Add and subtract within 20, use place value to add and subtract larger numbers
Multiply and divide within 100, solve problems using all 4 operations, begin fractions
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to solve problems with
all 4 operations, extend understanding of fractions
Children also need to be able to think FAST and solve problems using these facts. You can help at home
by practicing facts with your child and asking them to explain what the operations (+,-,x,/) in math mean
and give examples of situations when these operations are used. Children need to see that math is used
in the real world- so ask your child to do the math that comes up in daily life.
Math Problems of the Month: NOVEMBER 2013
Gobble, Gobble
A small flock of wild turkeys can eat 50
pounds of cracked corn in a week. If they ate
the same amount every day, how many
pounds would they eat each day? How many
pounds would they eat in one month?
Crazy Eights
How many eights would you write down if you
wrote all of the whole numbers from 1 to 100?
How could you find this answer without having
to write all the numbers and count them? If
you counted a different digit, would you have
the same amount? Explain your thinking.
Send your solutions to Mrs. Gloyd by November 25th to
be eligible for a prize!

Hispanic Heritage Day was held on October 11th. Each grade level did
activities and crafts related to the Hispanic culture. Many students shared
artifacts from home. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten made Serapes.
First grade made Mexican Flags and performed The Mexican Hat Dance.
Second grade made Guatemalan Kites, Chilean Rain Sticks and Mayan
Masks. Third grade studied and wrote biographies about famous Hispanic
Americans. Fourth grade researched several countries and created IPADS
that shared facts about those countries. All of the work was displayed and
students were able to walk through and examine the items. Some
students were there to explain what their class had completed. As the
students walked through the room was filled with Hispanic music. Our
staff was treated to a delicious lunch provided by parents.
Guidance
Please remember to always check in at the office when you come to school
on any and all occasions. This is for the safety of all children.
Schedules and Consistency
Much research has been done with regards to schedules and children’s
behaviors. Believe it or not, a consistent schedule can improve your child’s
behaviors immensely.
Bed time is a great place to start. Because we have such and early day at
S.E.S, an early bedtime is important. 3-6 year olds need 10-12 hours of sleep
a night and 7-12 year olds need 10-11. These hours, of course, vary with
children but as a general rule 10 hours of sleep for a school age child is ideal.
A bedtime routine repeated every night will help smooth the transition to
bed. Take a bath, read a book, maybe some gentle music and your child will
be asleep in no time. If you don’t have this routine now, begin and in a few
weeks’ time, your child bedtimes will be stress free.
Unity Day
Unity Day was a great success here at S.E.S and in Queen Anne’s County.
Our flyover with “No Bullying” was terrific, our dedication of the Friendship
bench by the SGA was fantastic and our special guests (Ravens Cheerleaders,
Chick Fil-A cow, Tweety from Six Flags, The Rita’s Ice Cup and many
community representatives)were especially noteworthy.
The message of the day was that we will stand united as a community, a
school and friends against bullying. This is not just a one day event but a year
round message. Help us to teach our children to be respectful and caring of
each other every day.
New Bilingual Parent Coordinator at SES
We are fortunate to have a new bilingual parent coordinator at
Sudlersville Elementary School. Our Title I monies were used to hire
Mrs. Karla Altamirano. Her primary role at SES is to increase parent
and school connections. She also provides translation for our EL
families. She is currently organizing a parent workshop to provide
additional information for our EL families. Please join me in

already been very successful. The
students are very proud when their
fathers and other male role models
have volunteered as a Watch D.O.G.S.
The staff really appreciates their time
and effort also! Not only do the dads
get to wear the special t-shirt all day,
but so do their students! There is
also a goodie bag for the student of
the Watch D.O.G.S. and students
may also receive a “Great Student”
sticker from the Watch D.O.G.S. if he
sees a student displaying great
student behavior! To all those
positive male role models out there
who have not stepped up and signed
up to be a Watch D.O.G.S., please
check the calendar in the cafeteria for
available dates. We could use your
help!
An updated version of the Parent
Involvement Plan and Family
Compact with parent input will be
reviewed with parents during the
Parent Teacher Conferences on
October 31 and November 1. Please
be sure to sign the compact. Grades
3 and 4 students will also be asked to
sign the Compact.
Parent /Teacher conference tips for
a successful conference:
Plan for it. Before you come to your
conference, write out questions you
would like to ask. What are my
child’s strengths and weaknesses?
Keep an open mind. Your goal is to
work for cooperation between
you and your child’s teacher. Even it
the teacher says something you
disagree with, try to listen to what he
or she has to say.
Ask to see your child’s work. There is
no better way to see how your child is
progressing than to look at his or her
school work.
Ask for suggestions. If you child is doing
well, ask what you can do to keep things
on a positive track. If there are problems,
ask what you can do to help.
Clarify and summarize as you go.
Teachers sometimes use educational
buzzwords or acronyms. If you don’t
understand something the teacher says,
just ask!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!

Students love to read and check
out books. If you are in the
building Mrs. Comegys would love
for you to stop by and help put
books back on the shelves. It takes
a lot of time to keep the books in
order with almost 400 students
checking out books.
Also, if you haven't gone to
Schoolstore.net and registered
please do. It is an on-line shopping
mall with over 400 merchants. You
register through them and then
select the store that you want to
shop at. It's easy and the school
earns money. Our school code is

P.E. POST
HELLO ALL!
This month in Phys. Ed class
students participated in Fitness
Gram Pre-Assessments. Students
were very determined to do their
best! We will perform a mid-year
assessment in December to look
for improvements and again at
the end of the year.
I have chosen the entire 2nd
Grade to use as the population
for the Physical Education SLO’s.
The SLO has been written to
show their growth in the Fitness
Gram PACER test and a cognitive
assessment.
They will need to know the FITT
principle which explains how
many times, how hard, and how
long you should exercise to
assume a “fit” lifestyle. Most
importantly, students need to
know what “types’ of activities
can be performed to achieve a
healthy fitness level.
