Over 90% of the people that live there are Roman Catholic. Animals The Dominican Republic may not have many animals on land but they sure have aquatic life! Some fish that live on the shores of the Dominican Republic is the Banded Butterflyfish. They live in the reefs and swim in pairs. Another fish in the Dominican Republic is the Black Jackfish. It is known for being in a school with other species. Sports The most popular sport in the Dominican Republic is baseball. A very good player from there is Sammy Sosa. Food ● A Popular food in the Dominican Republic is Flan. Flan is a dessert made with white sugar, eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract. Food ● A popular drink is a Batida. He was an amazing baseball player. Another famous baseball player is Albert Pujols. A previous president, Leonel Fernández is also famous. He was the president in 1996 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2012. Leonel Fernandez is important because he was the first elected president under his party, the Dominican Liberation Party. Famous Places and Landmarks Colonial Zone: Is an area that attracts many tourists because of the many landmarks. Most of them were built during the colonial period of the Spanish rule, giving this area its name. Malecon is a stone built embankment area along the waterfront that is a huge tourist attraction. Both these places are located in the capital city, Santo Domingo. Celebrations The main celebration is the Dominican Carnival. It is mostly celebrated on the main streets and takes place around February 27, Dominican Independence Day. This carnival has a lot of colorful costumes that symbolize many religious and traditional characters.
