ONLINE TUTORS (E-TUTORS)

UNISA is the only publicly funded institution in South Africa dedicated to distance education. In keeping
with its mandate as a comprehensive, open and distance learning tertiary institution offering a variety of
academic and career-focused programmes, the University is inviting applications for services as Online
Tutors (E-tutors) on an independent contract basis.
DUTIES
E-Tutors will have the following duties:
1. Facilitate online delivery of tutorial material
2. Manage students’ learning experiences online
3. Facilitate students’ interactions with their peers online
4. Provide students with academic and technical support online
REQUIREMENTS
E-Tutors must meet the following requirements:
 Ongoing access to an internet connected computer at own cost
 Minimum of an Honours Bachelor’s degree in the subject that you would like to tutor (in
some disciplines a Bachelor’s degree will be acceptable)
 Own copies of software packages that may be required for teaching e.g. Internet browsers, Word
processing
 Basic computer and internet skills i.e. no training will be provided in using software packages,
Internet sites or email
 Commitment to meeting deadlines and a passion for student-centered learning
 Advanced communication skills and proficiency in English (student communication will mostly
be text based writing by email, forums or assignment feedback documents)
 Friendly, patient and sensitive to a diversity of students
RECOMMEMDATION
 Former Unisa student - owing to operational knowledge of the myUnisa platform
 Teaching experience
As an Independent Contractor you will:
 Not be regarded as an employee
 Not be entitled to any benefits such as medical, office space, equipment, leave (including sick
leave), etc in terms of the UNISA’s conditions of service.
 Provide your own infrastructure i.e. your own computer, your own internet access and any other
office-related equipment.
 Not be based at a Unisa campus or any location linked to the University
 Work on your own time in completing teaching tasks online (e.g. interacting with students on
discussion forums, sending emails, etc).
Please clarify in your CV the nature of your computer and internet connection; the nature of the
software packages installed on your computer; the nature of your computer skills and knowledge
of software packages; the nature of your knowledge of myUnisa; and the nature of your teaching
experience.

College of Law
Requirements:
 LLB qualification (LAW) and/or equivalent criminal justice qualification (JUSTICE)
 B.A. with a major in Criminology or a B.Tech in Policing, Corrections, Security Risk
Management and Forensic Investigation
 LLM-degree and Honours Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Penology or Police Science will
be an added advantage
 Practical experience, such as experience as a prosecutor, police official, correctional services
official, probation officer, social worker or further qualifications, such as that of candidate
attorney or admitted attorney will be beneficial

Requirements:
 The minimum requirement is an Honours Bachelor’s degree relevant to the discipline that will be
tutored
 A Bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for the following disciplines: Business ethics,
Ethics, Philosophy, Sustainable Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, Decision Science
(with a major in Mathematics and first year in Financial Mathematics)
 Advanced computer literacy
 Recommendation: teaching experience of at least three years

 The minimum requirement is a BEd Hons degree or an Honours Bachelor’s degree plus a
professional teaching diploma

Requirements:



The minimum requirement is an Honours Bachelor’s degree relevant to the discipline that will be
tutored
Advanced computer literacy
At least three years as a practitioner in a professional field using computer
technology

To be considered as an independent contractor (E-Tutor), complete the online application form
Motivate why you think you should be considered, and submit the following documents below:
1. A comprehensive curriculum vitae
2. Certified copy (within the previous six months) of highest educational qualification
3. Certified copy (within the previous six months) of academic transcript
4. Certified copy (within the previous six months) of your identity document/passport
5. Certified copy (within the previous six months) of SAQA verification of foreign qualifications.
Applicants whose certification on documents is not within the period of six months on applying will not
be considered.
UNISA reserves the right to authenticate all qualifications without any further consent from the applicant.
Late, incomplete and incorrect applications will not be considered.
Remuneration: R5625 per month
Closing Date: 21 September 2012
Assumption of duty: Online training will start from November 2012. Contracts will be effective from 1
February 2013 and first payment will be from 28 February until 31 May 2013 (first semester) and 30
June 2013 until 30 September 2013 (second semester).
