Read on… Arriving In Singapore These are some of the important documents which you will need to ensure that you bring along with you for your entry to Singapore and for the collection of your Training Employment Pass (TEP) at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). 1. In-Principle Approval (IPA) Letter + Annexes (Total 7 pages excluding blank pages) ** 2. Letter of Admission 3. Letter of Certification 4. Detailed Training Programme 5. Passport & Immigration White Card (Passport has to have at least 2 blank visa pages) 6. Original Graduating Certificates & Transcripts (For all levels, i.e. Degree, Master, Bachelor. To be translated into English) 3 Arriving In Singapore (Continued) 7. Payment * 8. Medical Report (If student’s internship is 6 months and above) ** Note** 1. In-Principle Approval (IPA) Letter + Annexes (Total 7 pages excluding blank pages) • Please complete Part A Declaration by Applicant and do take note of the TEP Conditions and the Procedures for the Collection of the TEP. • A recent passport size photo taken within the last 3 months to be affixed in Part A Declaration by Applicant . Part B Declaration by Local Employer / Sponsor will have to be completed by NTU International Student Centre (ISC). Please bring this set of document to ISC for them to sign before going to the MOM to collect your TEP. There will be a tour to the ISC on the 17th of June 2008. Please bring along your document to ISC for them to sign. 4 Arriving In Singapore (Continued) ** Note** 7. Payment Please bring along some spare cash as payment is required for the collection of the TEP. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) Maps will be given out to you on the first day of your orientation. 8 Staying on NTU Campus *16th June 2008 to 8th August 2008* During your stay in NTU, you will be living in the Graduate Hall which is located at 50 Nanyang Crescent. A one month deposit of S$350** is required when checking into the room. This amount is however refundable. In addition, you need to sign a tenancy agreement for the rental of your room and this will be done on the 2nd day of the Orientation Programme which is held on the 17th of June 2008. ** May be subjected to an upward revision 9 Staying on NTU Campus (Continued) *16th June 2008 to 8th August 2008* Each room, which is not air-conditioned, has an attached bathroom and is furnished with a bed, study table, a chair, ceiling fan, wardrobe, a shoe rack and water heater. However you need to bring the following items as they are not provided. • Linens • Utensils • • • • • Blankets Pillows Bolsters (Optional) Wardrobe Hangers Electric Kettle (Optional) (i.e. bowls, cups, spoons, forks, etc) • Toiletries • Toilet rolls • LAN Cables (For internet Access) 10 Staying on NTU Campus (Continued) *16th June 2008 to 8th August 2008* There are 3 lobbies in the Graduate Hall and each lobby has its own pantry. The pantry is furnished with a hot water dispenser, microwave ovens and a common refrigerator. Cooking however is strictly not allowed. The pantries are also furnished with washing machines, dryers and ironing boards. The washing machines are complimentary but the dryers are coin operated. 11 Staying on NTU Campus (Continued) *16th June 2008 to 8th August 2008* Stipends Your monthly stipends is S$2,000 which is inclusive of the cost of lodging. A cheque will be issued to you and the amount which you will be receiving is S$2,000 minus the cost of lodging and other expenses (i.e. accommodation after EASPI program, if applicable.) 12 Staying on NTU Campus (Continued) *16th June 2008 to 8th August 2008* For returning of room keys, you can either return it to the International Student Centre (ISC) Office during office hours or deposit it in the box just located outside the ISC Office. ISC office hours are from :• Monday to Thursdays : 8.30 am to 5.45 pm • Fridays : 8.30 am to 5.15 pm 13 Transportation Within Campus Within the campus, there are Shuttles Buses available for you to get around. Please note that the Bus Stops listed under the Routes A, B and C are not in order. 16 Transportation Outside Campus • There are two local public transport service buses, namely service numbers 179 and 199 which will take you from the campus to the nearest regional bus interchange, Boon Lay Interchange. • Once at Boon Lay Interchange, you can select from a wide range of bus services available there or board the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) service to bring you to your destinations. In case you need directions or advice on which service you should take, there are Passenger Service Staff within the interchange who will be more than glad to assist you. 17 Transportation Outside Campus (Continued) • If you’re in a hurry or just in need of a hassle-free transport solution, you can always call or flag down a taxi from wherever you are. One of the Main Cab Companies is Comfort Cab and City Cab and the Hotlines to call are: 65521111 or 65538888 Cost of Transportation for MRT Trains and Public Buses Charges for these public transport services vary depending on the mode of transport you’ve chosen. Taking the public buses or MRT services would require you to pay fares via one of two ways: 1. Cash transaction ** Refer to Slide 19 Be sure to have some loose change on you when you board the public buses to purchase the tickets. In MRT stations, you can buy your ticket at the Ticketing Machines within the stations itself. 18 Transportation Outside Campus (Continued) 2. EZ-Link fare cards Introduced for use on the MRT and public buses, it is Singapore's first contactless Multi-purpose Stored Value (MPSV) card. When you board either public buses or MRTs, all you have to do is tap these specialized cards on the card readers and tap again when you alight. The value on the card will be deducted automatically. It is a lot more convenient than paying cash each time you board these public transport. And not to mention cheaper too! You can purchase EZ-Link cards at the Passenger Service offices in all MRT stations at S$7 a piece and subsequently top-up your EZ-Link cards at the Ticketing Machines when the credit on your card is running low. However, if you are using the EZ-Link card, then your bus fare will be automatically deducted from your card when you tap your card on the Card Reader before alighting as mentioned in the previous slide. 20 Transportation Outside Campus (Continued) Cost of Transportation for Taxis As for taxis, the mode of transaction widely used is cash. Certain taxi companies however do accept credit cards. You can always ask the operator when you’re calling for a taxi or just ask the taxi driver before you get into the taxi if credit cards are accepted. You can also get a copy of Bus Guide 2008, a pocket sized booklet that contains information on all the buses services and the routes each service takes. Within that very booklet, you can also find the route which MRTs take. Bus Guide 2008 is available at all major bookstores and convenience stores. 21 Banking Facilities In And Near Campus The only bank on campus is the OCBC bank and if you wish, you can open an account with them. The following documents are needed to open an account in OCBC: • Letter of Award (Issued by NSF) • Passport • Minimum amount of S$500 into the new account (Amount varies among different banks) Note that a S$2 service fee per month is chargeable if the monthly average balance falls below S$1,000. As such, do remember to bring at least the minimum sum with you should you wish to open an account with the OCBC Bank. Some need to be reserved online via NTU’s StudentLink though. Weather In Singapore Here are some quick facts about the climate in Singapore, a tropical haven by the virtue of geography. 1.Temperature range between 22 o to 34oC (72o to 93oF) 2.Average humidity ~90% in the morning and ~60% in the afternoon 3.Abundant rainfall throughout the year, with the months of November and December being the wetter monsoon season. 4.Lots of Sun!! Daytime, of about 13 hours, is almost constant throughout the year. The months of June and July are considered to be the hottest months of the year. However, most indoor facilities throughout Singapore and public transportations are fully air-conditioned and so, you don’t have to worry about the heat. Taxi drivers and customerservice personnel use English as their primary language. Road signs and other vital information in public places are displayed in English. • However one must take note that the breed of English used here is based primarily on mainstream British English with a slight influence from American English. 33 Languages In Singapore (Continued) Owing to its multi-racial and multi-cultural background, Singapore also houses a diverse range of ethnic languages. Here is a list of ethnic groups and the languages they speak. Chinese (78% of population) Mandarin which is the mother tongue for most Chinese people & a number of dialects spoken domestically including Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien and Teo-Chew. Malay (13.9% of population) Malay, considered to be the national language of Singapore due to historical reasons. Indians (7.9% of population) Tamil and Hindi considered to be main languages of India. Vast number of dialects spoken domestically includes Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu. Others (1.4% of population) Foreigners settled here speak their mother tongue. These includes French, German, and Indonesian amongst many others. You also need this NTU User Name and Password to access your NTU Emails i.e. yourusername@ntu.edu.sg For this, Centre for IT Services (CITS) will help you to activate a new account and a Letter of Notification regarding the details of the activation of this account will be issued to you. 44 At The End of The EAPSI Program At the end of your Research Attachment in NTU, you are required to complete the following: 1. Submit a written report to your Supervisor 2. Prepare a presentation and present your work at the closing ceremony that will be held on August 8th 2008 • Each Presentation takes about 20 minutes (15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A) • The presentation should cover mainly your research findings as well as your experiential stay in Singapore 45 Who Can I seek For Assistance?
