Course Description:
An intregrated course covering the fundamentals of the plant and animal world. Special attention is given to the
structure and function of cells, the genetic continuity of life, and evolution..
Attendance:
You are expected to be in class and participating. If you have some reason for not being able to attend, you must
let me know prior to your absence. (And within 24 hours if not in advance of the absence) Unexcused absences
will result in losing any points that were available that day. Quizzes and assignments that are missed may not be
made up for any reason including excused absences. (except for school related absences in which the quiz must be
taken in advance) Exams must be made within 7 days of the missed test and only for excused absences that are
approved by the instructor. You must provide proof that it was indeed an excusable absence. (note from doctor,
etc.) Unexcused absences will be a 5 point reduction in your grade.

Withdrawal policy:
Please be advised that the instructor may withdraw you if you are not attending class. (More than five unexcused
or excused absences.) It is your responsibility to ask for a withdrawal if you no longer wish to be in the class.
Grading:
Total points for this class are subject to change. Here is the plan for points during this class:

Late work is not accepted. Quizzes will be unannounced and cannot be made up for any reason.
The scale is as follows:
90-100% =
80-89% =
70-79% =
60-69% =
Below 60%=

Cheating policy:
Cheating (including plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty) will result in serious consequences.
Consult the student handbook for details. Using a cell phone for any reason during a quiz or test will
result in a grade of zero, I will assume that you are cheating.
Cell Phones:
Cell phone/electronic device use is not allowed during class. You will be asked to leave if you use a phone during
class and you will lose participation points for that day. This policy includes texting and checking for messages.
Looking at a cell phone during a test or quiz will be considered cheating and will result in zero for that test.
Classroom Behavior:
I reserve the right to drop/withdraw any student who chooses to exhibit inappropriate behavior during class. This
includes anything that interferes with a student’s ability to learn or the instructor’s teaching. Students may also be
dropped for poor academic performance.
Disability statement:
If you need support or assistance because of a disability, you may be eligible for academic accommodations through
the Special Populations office. Stop by office B-204 or call (815) 224-0284.
Financial aid statement:
Withdrawal from a course can affect financial aid. Students who receive financial aid should see an advisor in the
Financial Aid Office before withdrawing from a course.
