Self-Guided Plant Tour
(ROUTE DIRECTIONS ARE ALWAYS NOTED IN ALL CAPS)
August 26, 2015
Did you know…?
Plants are just as competitive as the UCI World Road Championship race
participants arriving in Richmond (and LGBG) next month. This bio-competition for
space, water and nutrients is a main reason those lovely “Meadow in a Can”
products so often disappoint. A wild-flower meadow that provides continuous color,
while requiring little weeding, watering, fertilizing or mowing is not sustainable. In
fact, the word meadow comes from the words “to mow”, and both mow and
meadow derive from the word for mouth – as the mouths of grazing animals
“mowed” the first meadows.
Meadows do not occur naturally in temperate climates. In Virginia an
unmanaged field planted only with annual wildflowers will revert to a forest as
woody shrubs, then pines, and then hardwood trees out compete the colorful,
reseeding annuals most of us visualize when we think “meadow”.
LGBG’s Anderson Wildflower Meadow is planted on the steep slope
continuing down from the Conservatory to the Sydnor Lake Walk. A cursory glance
at the hill might cause a visitor to think it is a weed strewn hillside. In fact it contains
many different native grass plants and flowering perennials. These plants have
deep roots systems to hold the soil and stave off competition. Their flowers and
seed heads, while not as showy as annual wildflowers, feed our native birds and
pollinators.
