Prologue: Good Morning, Everybody! It is nice spring weather today, the campus is so beautiful! I hope all of you relax yourselves and enjoy to study outside classroom. Today’s topic (subject) is to learn how to introduce our college.

Two things to remind you:

First, try the best to use spoken English, as clear and simple as you can, instead of using written English, which is usually too formal with many difficult words and expressions;

Second, take it easy, another words “don’t be nervous”, then you can learn easily. Think about that a group of people is visiting our campus and you are the guide. The purpose of this practical class is that each of you becomes a qualified campus tour guide, try the best to speak fluent

English, with confidence, be proud of yourself!

Part 1 General Introduction of our College

Our college, formal name “Shandong College of

Tourism & Hospitality” and SCTH for short , was transformed from the former Shandong

Provincial Tourism School, which was founded in

1988 by the jointly investment of China

National Tourism Administration, and Shandong

Provincial Government. In 2005, our campus was moved to “the Town of Universities” in Zhangqiu from downtown Jinan city.

Here is the new campus, which was put into use in

2005. Compared with the former one, the new campus is much larger in area and with better facilities. The new campus covers an area of 1000 mu (Chinese acres or about 67 hectares) with beautiful surroundings.

The campus is equipped with advanced educational facilities, which meets well the future development of the college. The campus can be divided into six functional zones: the Administrative Zone, the

Teaching Zone, the Living Zone, the Sports Zone, the

Practical Training Zone and the

Landscape Zone.

The college enjoys excellent reputation for its educational standard and facilities. The college has an annual enrollment of more than 2000 students and the total number of students reaches to 6400. I am going to show you around the campus, you will see many of our teaching facilities, such as the Multifunctional Classroom, the Physical Training &

Etiquette Classroom, the Simulation Hotel Room,

Chinese and Western Restaurant and Kitchen,

Practical Bar and 3-D Multi-media Room, the Tea

Ceremony House, etc.. At the same time, we also have the Aviation Service Training Center, the Practical

Golf Course and 4 Star Grand Rivers Garden Hotel.

As one of leading vocational institutions of tourism education in China, the college is always keen to pursue the concept of internationalization, and try all the best to establish the vision of becoming a world leading institution of tourism education. Therefore the college has taken great efforts to build a doublequalified faculty team, which refers to being academically and practically qualified. Many of our teachers are well experienced in tourism industries; they have once worked as

Managers in hotels or travel agencies.

Some teachers enjoy international background, they used to work, study or get trained abroad. Meanwhile, the college employs many foreign teachers from USA,

Australia, France, Korea and Japan , They have done a very good job for improving the foreign language teaching.

Over many years, the college has accumulated a lot of successful experience of vocational tourism education and formed its own characteristics. The college has established strategic partnership with industries at home and abroad, 15% of the students annually go abroad for internship and employment in worldleading hotels and other tourism industries.

Characters of our college

At present, the college offers 7 departments and more than 30

Majors (or Major Orientations), which all are connected with tourism or related industries. The college motto is “Happiness is our vocation!” The college devotes itself to “cultivate elegant ladies and gentlemen”. The college helps the students to be modern tourism élites. In 2009, the college and the other four renowned tourism colleges co-established “Five-star League”, which is called the “Ivy League” for Chinese higher vocational tourism education. Our students are highly appreciated by tourism industries for their elegant manners, fluent foreign language speaking, professional knowledge and skill; therefore the graduates are always hot in the employment market.

Part Two: the Landscape Zone

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is one of the six functional zones in the campus—the Landscape Zone. We have been devoting great efforts to design and construct our campus landscape zone, so far it has been approved as National AAA Level Scenery. There are two functions for this zone. First, it is to beautify the campus. As you can see it is a typical design of a Chinese garden and most beautiful part in the campus. Second, it is the place for the students of Tour Guide Major and Scenic Spots

Development Major to do practical training. And I am especially proud to let you know that this area used to be a wasteland for construction garbage. Just two years ago, here was still very desolate with weeds everywhere. So this landscape zone is not only beautiful but also significant for environmental protection.

Look, the layout of all campus buildings is following natural terrain and well-spaced.

Considering the campus environment, the mountain background and garden designing, the landscape zone becomes so harmonious with the surroundings. Many of our teachers and students are part of the team for landscape design, beautification, routine maintenance and management.

First, in front of us is the motto rock carved with “Happiness Is Our Vocation”. The motto rock is standing here and tells everybody that this college follows the concept of Happy

Education. It encourages all the students to enjoy their study and living in the college and devote their wisdom and knowledge to society in the future.

Let’s move forward! The landscape is designed with the concept of “Mountains, Rivers, Sages” to present the natural beauty of mountains and rivers in

Shandong Province and its cultural connotation. You can find many natural and cultural elements in this part of landscape, for example: the rock “No.1 Among

Five Holy Mountains of China”, “Willow Spring”,

“ Pavilion On Brookside”, “Orchid Pavilion”.

Over there, the rock “No.1 Among Five Holy

Mountains of China” , symbolizing Taishan Mountain.

The rock is standing on the top of the landscape zone with many smaller rocks surrounded. The four characters were originally written by Yugou in Qing

Dynasty on the top of Taishan Mountain, here is proportionally smaller. Everybody knows Taishan

Mountain is the symbol of Chinese national spirit. It is also a significant carrier of Shandong culture.

Lakeview Please look at your right hand side to enjoy the Lakeview, the lively part of the landscape zone.

Together with brooks connecting this bigger lake and a smaller one up there, a man-made waterfall and the architectures alongside the lake, it makes up a picturesque view. In summer, lotus flowers blossom and willow trees are graceful. It reminds us the famous couplets describing the beautiful scenery of

Daming Lake of Jinan “Lotus flowers are on four sides and willows on three, the city’s mountain view with its half are the lake”.

The Pavilion on Brookside. The Pavilion on Brookside is over there at the northwest corner on lakeside. The name of this pavilion is after a poem “Sunset of Pavilion on

Brookside” by Li Qingzhao , the famous Song Dynasty poetess. Hope you all remember this poem, let me reside it for you. I often recall the Brookside pavilion, Where I was detained against the waning day. I was so drunk that I couldn’t know my way home, but I had all the fun. Indeed,

I was gay. All the pleasure spent, I managed to return. I plunged deep among waterlilies my sculls. I struggled and struggled out of the tangle. I thus alarmed a beach of herons and gulls.

This is Willow Spring. As you know Jinan is famous for springs, “springs and willows are in every household” is the portrait of Jinan. Among all the cities, only Jinan is named

Spring City. Therefore, without springs, Jinan will be lack of genius, charm and romance. Willow Spring will remind you of Pu Songling, with his literary name of Householder of Willow Spring , the author of 《 Strange Tales of a

Lonely Studio 》 (a classic literature work with a collection of about 500 stories by Pu Songling of the Qing Dynasty).

On the list of Jinan’s 72 springs, there is one named Willow Spring too. The Willow

Spring gushing out day and night seems to bring us joy and vigor.

Orchid Pavilion. Along the lakeside path southward, now we come to Orchid Pavilion hidden in the bamboos. The name of Orchid

Pavilion is after the story about Wang Xizhi, the famous calligrapher of East Jin Dynasty. His masterpiece was <<The

Preface of Collections in Orchid Pavilion>>, which was a beautiful article, but remembered for his art of calligraphy. Wang was born in Shandong, and all Shandong people were proud of him.

The Orchid Pavilion now is a Tea House managed by the students from Hotel Management department, for practical class and open to all teachers and students. With a Location beside the lake and surrounded by bamboo woods, the Orchid Pavilion provides a nice place to take rest and enjoy tea.

Sometimes the students perform a tea ceremony for guests, to bring them a wonderful time.

Qi State Great Wall. Please look over there! That is a section of miniature Great Wall. Everybody knows about Great Wall, but you may not know the Qi State

Great wall, which was the oldest Great Wall of China, founded in the Spring and Autumn Period, 400 years earlier than the Great Wall constructed by the First

Emperor when he unified China. So Qi State Great

Wall was called the Father of

Great Wall of China.

The Grassland of Thinkers. To the opposite of the

Teaching Building is a piece of open grassland, where a group of rocks will be set up to present the greatness of three sages in the Chinese history, Mo Tzu(Zi), Confucius and Sun Tzu(Zi). The copperplate engraving art will be used to showcase the scenes of “Mo Tzu Farming”,

“Confucius Giving Lectures on Apricot Altar” and “Sun Tzu and his Art of War”. Three sages were worldwide thinkers, so we name this place “the Grassland of Thinkers”. We are going to plant Apricot trees to symbolize that the teachers devote themselves to education career , to cultivate tourism professionals. In the harvest season, apricot trees will be fruitful, just like our college will be

“students everywhere”.

Ladies and Gentlemen, here we are going to finish the trip in the landscape zone.

Hope it is impressive! Thank you very much for listening!
