Climate & Health
Day 9 Lesson
Warm Up
 What is meant by the
 Health problems that
term global health?
transcend national
borders
 Spread of…
 Global impact of…
Globalization & Health
 Increased global trade &
travel promotes rapid
spread
 Improved access to
medicines, medical
information, and
training that can help
treat or cure these
diseases
T-P-S
 What are the current
major world diseases in
need of attention?
 HIV/AIDS
 Tuberculosis (TB)
 Found around world,
dvpt and dvping nations
 Malaria
 Cholera/Diarrheal
Diseases
 Primarily afflict poorer
countries
Major Health Concerns:
 HIV/AIDS: Infects human tissues, causing progressive
decline in immune system that leads to death



2.6 m new cases/yr, 1.8m deaths, over 33m living with disease
Since 1980s, 60m+ infected, 30m+ died
Debate over allocation of resources to prevention or treatment
 Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection that attacks lungs &
other organs




8 m new cases per year, 1.7 m die/yr (500K co-infected
w/AIDS)
Spread through infectious droplets (cough, sneeze, spit)
Thrives in conditions of poverty & overcrowding
DOTS prevention & treatment system
Major Health Concerns:
 Malaria: Parasite infects blood (mosquito bite) causing
extreme flu-like symptoms



400 m new cases/yr, kills ~2m (mainly children in Sub-Saharan
Africa) - Asia, Africa, Central/South America
Infant death, drop in education, decline in productivity& dvpt
Antimalarial drugs, treated bed-nets & other protective measures
 Cholera: Bacteria infects intestine causing diarrheal illness



3-5 m cases/yr, ~1.9m deaths
Areas w/inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and
inadequate hygiene
Rehydration & antibiotics, protective sanitary measures
Paradox of Global Health?
 Know how to prevent/treat/cure but still millions die yearly
from these very diseases!
 Pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, tuberculosis
 Death in childbirth
 Drug accessibility/availability
 Barriers to global health
 Geography, poverty, poly instability, apathy, ignorance
 Limited funding – govts and internatl aid org’s
 Overcoming barriers
 see Haiti & India clips in resources list @ end of lesson
UN Millennium Development Goals
 Adopted in 2000, achievement date 2015
 Framework for global development via eradication of
extreme poverty & its related conditions
 Poverty has many elements



Income –whether you have enough to buy the essentials
Quality of life –health, education
Opportunities –for ourselves and our children

Buffett
 Donate ½ fortune to
charity (of choice)

climate change
impact/relate to
each of these

and hunger

primary education
 Goal 3: Promote gender equality
and empower women
 Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
