4th Grade Homework 4th Quarter This quarter, you will be in charge of what you do each night. As always, there are videos to watch (if needed) and starred activities to practice. You must do all the starred activities and strive for 5 in a row correct. Remember to go to the mastery challenge in order to master the concept (dark blue). The videos are a resource. Watch as few or as many times as needed. Be sure to complete the Khan menu by the end of the quarter.. The remainder of quarter will be posted later in the month. If you complete this section, go back and master other 4th grade concepts from earlier in the year. Decimals and fractions Decimals and fractions are two different ways of representing the same number. In this tutorial, we'll explore converting between the two and thinking about what exactly decimals represent. Common Core Standards: 4.NF.C.5, 4.NF.C.6, 4.NF.C.7 Watch: Converting decimals to fractions example 1 Watch: Decimals and fractions on a number line Watch: Converting decimals to fractions example 2 Do: Decimals on the number line 2 Watch: Converting decimals to fractions example 3 Watch: Comparing decimals example 1 Do: Converting decimals to fractions 1 Watch: Comparing decimals example 2 Watch: Decimals on a number line Do: Comparing decimals 1 Do: Decimals on the number line 1 Rewriting fractions as decimals We already know that the same quantity can be represented as a decimal or a fraction. In this tutorial, we'll begin to see how a fraction can be rewritten as a decimal. The trick is to make sure the fraction has been reduced or simplified as much as possible, then to convert the fraction so that you're dealing with tens or hundreds--a much friendlier environment for our decimal friends! Watch: Basic example of rewriting a fraction as a decimal Do: Fractions as division by 10 or 100 Watch: Rewriting a fraction to decimal example 2 Do: Fractions as division by a multiple of 10 Watch: Rewriting fraction as a decimal to the hundredths place Measuring with metric and U.S. customary units: intro The International System of Units used today is based on the metric system. The United States, however, likes to dance to a different drummer and still uses the old British Imperial System (U.S. customary system) for most of its measuring. This tutorial will introduce you to both for measuring distance, volume, weight and time. Common Core Standard: 4.MD.A.1 Watch: Metric system: units of distance Watch: U.S. customary units: fluid volume Watch: Metric system: units of volume Watch: Finding reasonable unit of measurement example Watch: Metric system: units of weight Watch: Choose pounds or ounces to measure weight Watch: U.S. customary units: distance Do: Unit sense Watch: U.S. customary units: weight Unit conversion When you first started measuring things in units in 2nd grade, you saw that you might want to use different units depending on the scale, application or culture that you are in. You can imagine that you'd want to convert from one unit to another when needed. Whether we're moving between metric and U.S. customary units, between ounces and pounds, or between meters and kilometers....these conversion examples and explanations are going to help a lot! Common Core Standard: 4.MD.A.1 Watch: Converting between units of time Watch: Converting U.S. customary units of fluid volume Watch: Converting U.S. customary units of distance: feet to inches Watch: Converting metric and U.S. customary units of weight Watch: Converting metric units of distance: kilometers, meters, centimeters Do: Converting to smaller units Word problems: moving between units of measurement Are we having fun yet? We are! Let's solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Common Core Standard: 4.MD.A.2 Watch: Units of measurement word problem: time to leave for home Watch: Units of measurement word problem: time Watch: Units of measurement word problem: distance Do: Converting to smaller units word problems (metric) Do: Time word problems Watch: Unit measurement word problem: running laps (US customary) Watch: Units of measurement word problem: making change Watch: Unit measurement word problem: weight (US customary) Watch: Currency conversion word problem Watch: Unit measurement word problem: volume (US customary) Do: Converting money word problems Watch: Units of measurement word problem: volume (metric) Do: Converting to smaller units word problems (US customary)
