The first step to becoming a teacher is to earn a
bachelor's in education degree. Graduates from
Grand Canyon University's bachelor's in education
program are prepared to sit for their teaching
licensure exam and become teachers in public,
private and charter schools.
Founded in 1949, Grand Canyon University has a
history of preparing students to become
knowledgeable, caring and skilled teachers, able to
effectively manage diverse classrooms. Our bachelor's
in education program offers four specializations
including early childhood education, elementary
education, secondary education and special
education that may be completed online or at our
traditional campus in Phoenix, Arizona.

Special Education programs at the University of Tennessee (UT) are designed
to give teacher candidates a strong foundation in both general and special
education pedagogical knowledge and skills. The program offers a Bachelor’s
degree, two types of Master’s degrees, an Education Specialist degree and a
Doctor of Philosophy in Education with a concentration in Special Education.
Additionally, both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are offered in Education of
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Special Education features collaboration with
other teacher education programs and, consequently, is housed in the
Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE) within the
College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS) at UT.
In addition to the degrees offered, the University of Tennessee’s Special
Education Program is designed to provide initial teacher-career
certification/licensure. Students gain knowledge of best practices in teaching,
research-based strategies, student learning, classroom management,
transition, and serving students with disabilities in a variety of settings.
Emphasizing service delivery, classroom techniques and advanced professional
skills, the Special Education Program aims to produce qualified, more than
certified, teachers capable of providing excellent services to students with
diverse learning needs
UT’s Special Education Program blends theory, research, and practice to
support the immediate professional needs of teachers in all stages of their
careers.

The Department of Special Education offers four
undergraduate majors in special education and a dual
major in special education and elementary education. Our
programs have earned excellent state and national
reputations and are accredited by the National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Teaching students with special needs can offer unique
challenges and personal satisfaction. Our special education
programs include both classroom lectures and many
opportunities for observation and experience in public
school classrooms and agencies.
You will gain a thorough understanding of disabilities, such
as visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities,
emotional or mental disabilities, and autism, and how they
affect students, their families, schools, and society. You'll
graduate well prepared to enter the classroom as a
licensed teacher.

Your degree requirements are carefully developed to give you high-level
competence for teaching students with mild to moderate cross-categorical
disabilities.
You will complete a 12-20 week session of full-time student teaching in an actual
classroom. (An extra fee applies.)
You must pass or complete rigorous assessments (tests, papers, assignments) which
will require you to demonstrate your competence in each subject area.
You will work with your assigned mentor on your personalized Degree Plan that
establishes the pace at which you prepare for and tackle the required assessments
in your course of study.
Each term is a full six months in length. During each term, you can complete as
much of your degree as possible. (Exception: your 12-20 week Demonstration
Teaching experience.)
Progress is measured through Competency Units (CUs), which are credit equivalents
that track your completion of the required assessments. To maintain full-time
status, you are expected to complete at least 12 CUs in a term; more are possible.
You and your mentor will determine the learning resources (online courses,
textbooks, tutorials, etc.) that will best serve you in your competency development.
With few exceptions, you will be able to choose when and where you study, and
together with your mentor, you’ll schedule your assessments.
It’s your program.
Online learning isn’t easy. You should expect to work hard and spend 20 hours or
more per week on your studies. But your program will be flexible enough to fit into
your lifestyle, not the other way around.

truck drivers who operate trucks transporting hazardous materials must
obtain a CDL, regardless of truck size. In many States, a regular driver's
license is sufficient for driving light trucks and vans.
